The ibis fly, Atherix ibls, inhabits riffles of streams and rivers in Nonh Sweden. It is included in the Swedish Red Data List under category 3 ("Rare"). Recent studies suggest that this species is in fact rather common in streams and rivers within its distribution area given the stream/river size is in the interval between 5 and 40 m. In a survey of 55 sites in northeastern Sweden, 22 were in this size interval and A. ibis was present at 15 of these sites. The difference between sites with and without A. ibis was positively related to water quality in terms of pH and conductivity, and negatively to filamentous algae, altitude and channel width, as indicated by a multiple discriminant analysis. The wing stalk in Diptera is examined, and its structures are re-evaluated and re-interpreted. The non-homology of A2 in Tipulomorpha and “A2” in other Diptera is claimed. Some notes are presented on the higher-level phylogeny of Diptera, especially those concerning Tipulomorpha. The family Trichoceridae is restored among Tipulomorpha, and the Tipulomorpha are re-affirmed as the sister group of the remaining Diptera. The clade Anisopodidae + Culicomorpha + Bibionomorpha is suggested as the sister group of Brachycera. Due to the lack of any existing guide for freshwater invertebrates on the Plateau we anticipate that this will become an essential field tool for students and researchers. Detailed taxonomic identifications of fauna will require more comprehensive sample collection protocols and identification keys, which are beyond the scope of this publication.
