On July 21 2007, the 88 best football players in the state of Michigan showcased their talents in front of approximately. 10,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The game itself was a well played contest, featuring some of the hardest hitting in recent All Star memory. The West was victorious by a final score of 9-7. East Drake Wilkins, and West Head Coach Tom Barbieri did a tremendous job preparing their teams. Both coaching staffs gave the players a week of memories that will last a lifetime. On behalf of the MHSFCA I would like to thank Michigan State Univeristy Head Coach Mark Dantonio, and his staff for hosting us again this year. Their hospitality made this year one of the smoothest running games in All Star History. A special thanks goes out to Director of Football Operations Mike Vollmar and Directory of High School Relations Dino Folino for their help setting up the logistics of All

Star Week. It takes more than one person to run the All Star Game, and I’d like to thank those who make it possible: Keith Froleich (Banquet), Larry Merx (Program), Craig Healy and Jim Buttson (Liason), Jim Clawson (Tickets), Tim Parker (Equipment), Troy Nezki (Hospitality), and Tim Baker, Fred Davis, Tony Ceccaci, and Loren Wiley (All Star Operations). In addition, past president and former MHSFCA All Star Committee Chair Larry Rueger was on hand during All Star Week to assist in day to day operations.

I look forward to next years game, and hope to see you there. October 2007 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 25th Annual MHSFCA Banquet to Honor the Best of the Best, Finest of the Finest By Tom Fagan, Hall of Fame Chair he 2007 Michigan high school football Hall of Fame banquet was held at the T University of Michigan’s Track Building on Saturday, May 19. The first banquet was in 1982. There the original board of directors of the Association was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Since that time, over the last 25 years, we have inducted almost 500 coaches into the Hall of Fame. We have had annual banquets with crowds of 450 to 900 people who turn out to support and cheer on the inductees. This year we inducted a class of 14 outstanding inductees from all over the state of Michigan. Although small in number, it was a typical group of dedicated coaches who were highly successful and as one inductee stated, “We were overworked, underpaid and loved every minute of it.” Another stated that their priorities are in this order, “God, family and football.” The inductees proved to be very articu- late and gracious as they introduced their families and gave credit to the many people who contributed to their successful careers. As MHSFCA President Al Slamer, the very successful coach from Battle Creek Central, stated in his comments about the accomplishments of the inductees, “They have won many championships and many honors for their schools, but what was most impressive was the positive impact these gentlemen had on thousands of student-athletes. They have led by example and will leave a legacy of which they will always be proud.” This was my 25th and last year as chairman of the Hall of Fame committee and master of ceremonies of the induction banquet. Chuck Ritter who was very successful for many years as head football coach at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School has been a dedicated and capable member of the Hall of Fame com- mittee and will be an outstanding Chair. One of the highlights of each banquet has been the welcome talk and involvement of the Michigan coaches starting with , , and for over a dozen years, who was once a Michigan high school football coach. The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association is proud to announce Joe Meerman, of Coopersville, as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Alliance Award. Joe has been involved in youth football at Coopersville for 21 years. He is described as compassionate and committed above and beyond the call of duty. In addition to his contributions in youth football, Joe also serves as an umpire and coach of little league baseball. Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Alliance Award MHSFCA Youth Football Committee

The MHSFCA Alliance Award is offered as a token of appreciation to person(s) having made a long-term commitment to youth football. Individuals that actively promote youth football, simply for a love of the game, and have done so for a long period of time, are excellent candidates. Coaches can be nominated if their contributions expand far beyond personal team(s). Won/loss records are of no concern. As a rule of thumb, persons that have affected the most youngsters over the longest period of time will receive the most consideration through this process. To date, all recipients of this award have been involved with youth football more than 20 years. Volunteers will be given additional consideration.

The nomination process will be completed when this form and accompanying letter are received on or prior to April 1 of the upcoming year. Please mail to: Bill Hollenbeck, MHSFCA, 6856 Wheeler Road, Maple City, MI 49664. Nomination Form (Please Print) Part I

The Youth Football Committee of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association appreciates your efforts in this matter. October 2007 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 21 Future Teacher/Coaches Data Base

By Vince Leveille, Vassar H.S.

I am sure you are aware of the teacher shortage problem in our state. Finding a teacher that is willing to coach football is even more difficult and is getting worse every year. Nearly every head football coach has a player or two attending college for teaching. We have developed a database of teacher education students that played football and are willing to coach upon graduation. I believe it would be much easier for administrators looking for teachers to hire a coach if they had a list of qualified applicants. Below is an information sheet. Please copy this as needed and give it to any of your former players that are in a teacher edu- cation program in college and are interested in coaching upon graduation. They do not have to be seniors to get their name in the database. I would like to keep track of freshmen through seniors. The success of this program is dependent upon the coaches getting the information sheet to prospective teacher/coaches. The second half of this concept is to get the information to the hiring person. If your school has a teaching position open and would like a list of future football coaches, they need to contact me and I will provide them with the information. Please notify your hiring person that there is a list available to them. If a school employee would like a list of names, have them contact Vince Leveille by email at [email protected] or by phone at 989-823-8534 (email would be easier).
