What is meant by ? Consumer fireworks are defined very technically in state law and the local ordinance. It generally refers to fireworks that explode and/or leave the ground but does not include “low impact fireworks” such as handheld and ground-based , fountains or “novelties” such as smoke bombs, poppers, snakes and caps. Common examples of consumer fireworks include: • Sky /bottle rockets • Multiple launchers • • Roman candles

What days/times can we use fireworks? The City of East Lansing permits fireworks on the following national holidays, during the following times:

’s: From 11 a.m. on New Year’s Eve to 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day. • Labor Day and Memorial Day: The Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding these holidays from 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. (none on the day itself). • Independence Day: From June 29 - July 4 from 11 a.m. - 11:45 p.m. on each of those days and then on July 5 if it falls on the weekend (Friday and Saturday only). • Juneteenth: From 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. on Juneteenth (June 19).

Where am I allowed to ignite fireworks on holidays? State law requires fireworks only be ignited from personal property. This means even on the days surrounding the holidays, it is illegal to ignite fireworks on public property (including streets and sidewalks), school property, church property or another person’s property without their express permission.

What is the fine for setting off fireworks in East Lansing during time periodsnot allowed by the city code? Igniting consumer fireworks during time periods not allowed by the city code is a civil infraction with a fine of $1,000 for each violation. Each consumer firework discharged in violation of the city code shall constitute a separate offense.

Are there other restrictions and laws I should be aware of? Yes. State law makes it illegal to discharge fireworks when intoxicated. Further, any violations causing property damage can result in potential fines of up to $5,000 and 90 days in jail. Violations causing serious injury or death are felonies with penalties of 5 years/$5,000 and 15 years/$10,000, respectively.
