Chapter one provides a reception genealogy of the Tibetan guru/disciple relation in Western scholarship, followed by historical-anthropological descriptions of its practice reception in both Tibetan and Euro-North American formations. -

Gendered Symbols in Theravada Buddhism 31 Gendered Symbols in Theravada Buddhism: Missed Positives in the Representation of the Female Kate Crosby * ABSTRACT: The aim of reinstating the Theravada nuns’ lineage has been a major motivating force in the production of Buddhist feminist and Buddhological gynocentric writings. While this is inspired by the wealth of evidence in Theravada literature for the intended inclusion of women on the soteriological path, so far the literatures of Mahayana and VajrayAna Buddhism have been far more productive than Theravada sources for the creation of modern feminist readings. Nevertheless, there has been something of an imbalance in the chronological spectrum of sources used, with Mahayana and VajrayAna literature being drawn from across the centuries, while most examinations of Theravada sources confine themselves, with rare exceptions, to the Theravada canon. Even within the canon the focus for eliciting paradigms of Theravada approaches to the feminine has tended to be a relatively narrow selection of texts. My purpose here is to look at how current categorisations of the ways in which the feminine is represented in Buddhist literature are affected if we examine a broader range of Theravada literature and related practice. In this paper, I shall draw on material from the earliest, the ‘medieval’ and the pre-modern periods of Theravada to extend and qualify how Theravada is currently represented in Buddhist feminist writings. In so doing, I show a far greater range of the appropriation of feminine and androgynous symbols within Theravada soteriology and cosmography than previously observed. These provide authority for some of the positive feminist readings of Theravada similar to those found in relation to Mahayana and VajrayAna Buddhist symbolism. -

Chapter 3 The Mahayana Background: The Sword of Wisdom Iconoclasm and Critical Perspective in Buddhism Shinran Shonin traced his own religious convictions back through his teacher Honen of Japan, through Shantao (Zendo) a pivotal Chinese Pure Land teacher, to Gautama, Sakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. In “Tannisho,” the remarkable religious classic written by Shinran’s follower, Yuiembo, this lineage of Shinran’s religious convictions is detailed and quoted as: “If Amida’s Primal Vow is true, Sakyamuni’s teaching cannot be false…” The passage continues to trace Shinran’s roots in Buddhism by logical steps. “If the Buddha’s teaching is true, Shan-tao’s commentaries cannot be false. If Shan-tao’s commentaries are true, how can Honen’s words be empty? If Honen’s words are true, what I, Shinran, say cannot be meaningless.” Shinran’s teachings are based on Mahayana Buddhism, one of the two paths (the other path being Theravada Buddhism) that became the main streams of Buddhist tradition after Gautama’s lifetime. Both paths claim to represent the fruition of Gautama Buddha’s search for enlightenment. He had struggled in discipline and meditation to discover the truth of existence. Although, as a ruler of the Sakya kingdom of northern India, he possessed all the material benefits the world offered, Gautama rejected his inherited role for the difficulties and challenge of pursuing truth. Through his strenuous pursuit and unremitting concentration during nearly seven years, from age 29 until his enlightenment at 35, he patterned the way of Theravada Buddhism, of discipline and self effort, which became the tradition followed in Buddhism throughout southeast Asia. -

105 Symbolism in City Planning in Cambodia from Angkor to Phnom Penh Martin Stuart-Fox and Paul Reeve ABSTRACT—Phnom Penh was a trading port when Angkor Thom fell to a Siamese army in 1431. Its choice as the site of a new capital for the Kingdom of Cambodia took account of the geographic symbolism of its location, while its urban planning incorporated additional symbolism believed necessary to legitimise royal power. The symbolism evident in the layout of pre-modern Phnom Penh derived from three sources: from Hindu- Buddhist cosmological beliefs that found their mature Khmer expression in Angkor Thom; from beliefs about the legitimisation of royal power in Theravada Buddhism; and from the principles traditionally applied in the design of Tai centres of power. The first rested on correspondences believed to exist between the divine macrocosm and the mundane microcosm. The second emphasized the significance of merit. The third defined a status hierarchy based on the direction of flow of the rivers on which the capitals of Tai polities were always located. City planning was a matter of great concern in all the Indianised kingdoms of Southeast Asia. The location of cities, their orientation and their layout were not decided at the whim of kings: they required the combined talents of the most learned men at court—astrologers, geomancers and court Brahmins well-read in the religious texts of ancient India, notably the treatises known as śāstra on such diverse subjects as law, statecraft and architecture. City planning reflected the way court officials and the kings they served understood the relationship between gods and kings, from which derived royal legitimacy in the eyes of their subjects, along with the power to ensure both economic prosperity and victory over their enemies. -

The Buddhist Roots of Secular Compassion Training A Comparative Study of Compassion Cultivation in Indian and Tibetan Mahāyāna Sources with the Contemporary Secular Program of Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) Julia Caroline Stenzel School of Religious Studies, McGill University, Montreal October 2018 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Julia C Stenzel, 2018 Abstract This dissertation is a comparative analysis of compassion cultivation in Indo-Tibetan Mahāyāna Buddhist contexts and the recent phenomenon of secular, Buddhism-derived compassion training in North America, exemplified by one of the most prominent programs to date, the Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) developed at Stanford University. This dissertation makes a contribution to the little-studied field of Buddhist compassion cultivation by tracing the transformations of important key concepts throughout Indian and Tibetan Buddhist intellectual history, highlighting the ways in which these transformational processes have enabled the contemporary secularization of compassion training. The study also clarifies conceptual discrepancies between traditional Buddhist and secular approaches to compassion training, particularly focusing on the compassion culture in which the respective training methods are embedded. The study thereby raises awareness of the scope and limitations of the secularization of Buddhist contemplative practices. The critical comparative analysis is based on textual interpretation of relevant texts from various genres, such as Indian Mahāyāna sūtra, Abhidharma, Tathāgatagarbha, Yogācāra and Madhyamaka śāstra, Tibetan commentarial texts and practice manuals of the Lojong (blo sbyong) and Lamrim (lam rim) traditions, as well as recent scientific studies of mindfulness and compassion. The choice of textual material is determined by its relevance for the evolution of compassion cultivation, culminating in its secularization in contemporary North America.
