Pull Factors Jamestown Pilgrims Settlers Economic Religious John Smith’s Map of New England - 1614 Religion in England – early 1600s • People had to belong to the Church of England • Church was headed by the King • Those who refused to join were persecuted ( mistreated, put in jail) • One group who did not want to attend the Church decided to separate from it. • They became known as the Separatists. Religion in England – early 1600s • In 1608 they decided to move to Holland so they could follow their religion freely. • In Holland they had religious freedom but began to worry that their children would not learn English ways. • They decided to go to North America where they hoped to live among English colonists and still be able to follow their own religion. • In time these people became known as Pilgrims because a pilgrim is a person who makes a journey for religious reasons. 1620 The Separatists requested and won a charter from the Virginia Company to begin a new settlement in the northern section of the area known as Virginia. They began to make plans for their journey. Some of their members, however, were afraid to go. In the end less that 40 Separatists planned to go. 1620 The Separatists needed more people to join them so they signed up other English people who did not share their religion. The Journey After 66 days at sea they saw land but it was not the Virginia Colony. They were far to the north in the area that is now Massachusetts. Pilgrims decided to stay in the area of Massachusetts instead of trying to get to the Jamestown area of the Virginia Colony. This presented them with a problem. They were in an area with no government. While still on the ship, they decided to write an agreement that would create a government for them and keep order. This type of agreement was called a “Compact.” The Mayflower Compact IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James, by the grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, and of one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the Colony: unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. Looking for a Place to Settle • They wanted a place with a safe harbor, fresh water, and good soil. • While most people stayed onboard some began to look for a good place. • Late in December they found a clearing with old cornfields. This turned out to be an abandoned settlement of the Wampanoag Native Americans. • On December 26, 1620 the group went ashore. This was officially the beginning of the Plymouth Colony, which was also known as the Plimoth Plantation. Plymouth Rock in the 17th century There are no contemporary references to the Pilgrims' landing on a rock at Plymouth. There are two primary sources written by the Pilgrims themselves describing the landing in Plymouth in 1620, William Bradford's journal Of Plymouth Plantation and the 1622 book popularly known as Mourt's Relation. Both simply say that the Pilgrims landed. Neither mentions any rocks in their account of the landing. The first references to Plymouth Rock are found over 100 years after the actual landing. The First Spring and Winter The first winter at Plymouth was very hard. • The weather was cold • There was not enough food. • Many people became ill. • By spring about one half of the settlers had died. Help came in the spring when an Abenaki Native American named Samoset walked into the settlement. • He shocked the group by speaking English to them. • He explained that he had learned English from sailors who fished along the coast. The First Spring and Winter Samoset returned to Plymouth with a Wampanoag who spoke English better than he did.

The success of the Plymouth Colony is largely due to his remarkable ability to manage men and affairs. The information presented here will not attempt to recreate all of his activities. Instead, we will present: a portion of the biography of William Bradford written by Cotton Mather and originally published in 1702, a further reading list, selected texts which may not be usually found in other publications, and information about items related to William Bradford which may be found in Pilgrim Hall Museum.     DESTINATION PLYMOUTH Approximately 40 miles from park, travel time 50 minutes: Turn left when leaving Normandy Farms onto West Street. You will cross the town line and West Street becomes Thurston Street. At 1.3 miles from exiting park, you will reach Washington Street / US‐1 South. Turn left onto US‐1 South. Continue for 1.3 miles and turn onto I‐495 South toward Cape Cod. Drive approximately 22 miles to US‐44 E (exit 15) toward Middleboro / Plymouth. Bear right off ramp to US‐44E, in less than ¼ mile you will enter a rotary, take the third exit onto US‐ 44E towards Plymouth. Continue for approximately 14.5 miles. Merge onto US‐44E / RT‐3 South toward Plymouth/Cape Cod for just a little over a mile. Merge onto US‐44E / Samoset St via exit 6A toward Plymouth Center. The Passengers More than 30 million people, including many celebrities, can trace their ancestry to the 102 passengers and approximately 30 crew aboard the Mayflower when it landed in Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts, in the harsh winter of 1620. On board were men, women and children from different walks of life across England and the city of Leiden, Holland. A significant number were known as Separatists - people who mostly wanted to live free from the current Church of England, under the ruling of Henry VIII, which dictated all aspects of life and to dispute that rule was a path ending in prosecution. Others were on the ship anticipating the chance to build a better future, the opportunity of new land and the offer of freedom and adventure. The passengers are often grouped into ‘Saints’ or ‘Strangers’ by historians, alluding to their motivations for the journey.

    NOTES ON COLE’S HILL by Edward R. Belcher Pilgrim Society Note, Series One, Number One, 1954 The designation of Cole‟s Hill as a registered National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, was announced at the Annual Meeting of the Pilgrim Society on December 21, 1961. An official plaque will be placed on Cole‟s Hill. The formal application for this designation, made by the Society, reads in part: "... Fully conscious of the high responsibility to the Nation that goes with the ownership and care of a property classified as ... worthy of Registered National Historic Landmark status ... we agree to preserve... to the best of our ability, the historical integrity of this important part of our national cultural heritage ..." A tablet mounted on the granite post at the top of the steps on Cole‟s Hill bears this inscription: "In memory of James Cole Born London England 1600 Died Plymouth Mass 1692 First settler of Coles Hill 1633 A soldier in Pequot Indian War 1637 This tablet erected by his descendants1917" Cole‟s Hill, rising from the shore near the center of town and overlooking the Rock and the harbor, has occupied a prominent place in the affairs of the community. Here were buried the bodies of those who died during the first years of the settlement. From it could be watched the arrivals and departures of the many fishing and trading boats and the ships that came from time to time. In times of emergency, the Hill was fortified for the protection of the town.

    Deconstructing the Myths of “The First Thanksgiving” by Judy Dow (Abenaki) What is it about the story of “The First Thanksgiving” that makes it essential to be taught in virtually every grade from preschool through high school? What is it about the story that is so seductive? Why has it become an annual elementary school tradition to hold Thanksgiving pageants, with young children dressing up in paper-bag costumes and feather-duster headdresses and marching around the schoolyard? Why is it seen as necessary for fake “pilgrims” and fake “Indians” (portrayed by real children, many of whom are Indian) to sit down every year to a fake feast, acting out fake scenarios and reciting fake dialogue about friendship? And why do teachers all over the country continue (for the most part, unknowingly) to perpetuate this myth year after year after year? Is it because as Americans we have a deep need to believe that the soil we live on and the country on which it is based was founded on integrity and cooperation? This belief would help contradict any feelings of guilt that could haunt us when we look at our role in more recent history in dealing with other indigenous peoples in other countries. If we dare to give up the “myth” we may have to take responsibility for our actions both concerning indigenous peoples of this land as well as those brought to this land in violation of everything that makes us human. The realization of these truths untold might crumble the foundation of what many believe is a true democracy.

The Pilgrims agreed to obey all the laws of the colony. Only men signed the compact. Native American Neighbors The Wampanoag Indians lived in the area where the Pilgrims landed. They hunted, farmed, and fished along the coast. sachem- a leader of the Native Americans The sachem of the Wampanoag was Massasoit. Massasoit, Squanto, and Samoset were Wampanoag sachems that saved the Pilgrims’ lives in their first years in New England. The Plymouth Colony The Pilgrims settled in Plymouth. They called their settlement Plymouth Plantations. The first winter many Pilgrims died from disease. The Pilgrims elected Bradford as their new leader.

    PLYMOUTH IN THE REVOLUTION: Hometown Heroes The officers of the American army, having generally been taken from the citizens of America, possess high veneration for the character of that illustrious Roman, Lucius Quintius Cincinnatus, and being resolved to follow his example, by returning to their citizenship, they think they may with propriety denominate themselves the Society of the Cincinnati. First meeting of the Society of the Cincinnati, 1783 With the end of the Revolutionary war, 13 separate colonies with different backgrounds and needs struggled to form a united country. The people looked for heroes to unite all the different factions. As victorious general and first president, George Washington attracted considerable attention and admiration. Washington was compared to Cincinnatus, a Roman general who left his beloved farm to serve his country as a general and then, at the end of the war, voluntarily gave up his power to return to his farm. The Order of the Cincinnati, a club of Revolutionary officers (and later of their lineal descendants) was formed in 1783. Washington served as its president until his death. Not everyone applauded the Order: As the officers of the American army had styled themselves of the order, and assumed the name of Cincinnatus, it might have been expected that they would have imitated the humble and disinterested virtues of the ancient Roman ... instead of ostentatiously assuming hereditary distinctions.
