It will discuss a range of views, from those who perceive Zionism to be a secular movement that defied tradition and religion, to those who perceive Zionism in religious and Messianic terms. During the first half of the course, we will discuss the evolution of the subject from the origins of the Zionist movement to the establishment of the state of Israel and the Six Days War. In the second half of the course, we will discuss current views about the subject and its implications for contemporary Israeli society and the Israeli-Arab conflict. Course requirements: 1. One short paper, in which you will be asked to analyze a primary source, should be submitted online by February 28, 2011 (maximum 1250 words, 20% of the final mark). 2. One research paper, due on March 21, 2011 (maximum 3000 words, 40% of the final mark). A list of suggested topics together with detailed instructions will be posted. You are welcome to write your research paper about a topic that is not on the list, with the Instructor’s advance approval. 3. A final exam, at a date to be determined by the Faculty of Arts and Science (40% of the final mark).

HANDBOOK Jewish Studies Specialization at the CEU for MA and PhD students in the History Department, Medieval Studies Department, and Nationalism Studies Program 2015-2016 Dear Students, Welcome to Central European University. The Jewish Studies Project is now entering its fifteenth year at CEU, under the direction of András Kovács, professor in the Nationalism Studies Program. Under the aegis of the Jewish Studies Project, we are happy to offer a specialization in Jewish Studies for MA and PhD students in the Department of History, Medieval Studies Department and the Nationalism Studies Program. The Jewish Studies specialization is available in the 1-year and 2-year MA programs and entails the completion of a certain number of course credits in the Jewish Studies classes listed below. All credits earned in these classes are also accepted as elective credits by the History Department and the Nationalism Studies Program. CONTRIBUTORS Jean-Christophe Attias Jean-Christophe Attias is professor of the History of Rabbinic Culture at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, Sorbonne, and a member of the Centre d’É- tudes des Religions du Livre (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique / EPHE). He is the author of Le Commentaire biblique. Mordekhai Komtino ou l’herméneutique du dialogue (1991) and of Isaac Abravanel, la mémoire et l’espérance (1992). Shlomo Avineri Shlomo Avineri is professor of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and former Director-General of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the first government of Yitzhak Rabin. He has been Visiting Professor at CEU in the Nationalism Studies Program and the Jewish Studies Program in 2002/2003. His latest publication (with Zeev Sternhell) is Europe’s Century of Discontent: the Legacies of Fascism, Nazism and Communism (The Magnes Press, Jerusalem, 2003). He is the recipient of the Israel Prize, the country’s highest civilian decoration. Esther Benbassa Esther Benbassa is professor of Modern Jewish History at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, Sorbonne, and director of the Alberto Benveniste Center for Sephardic Studies and Culture (EPHE). Her books translated into English are Haim Nahum: A Sephardic Chief Rabbi in Politics (1995), The Jews of France: A History from Antiquity to the Present (1999), and with Aron Rodrigue, A Sephardi Life in Southeastern Europe (1998) and Sephardi Jewry: A History of the Judeo-Spanish Community, 14th–20th Centuries (2000).

A number of developments will determine the future course of Middle East politics. The lecture will try to analyze the outcome of recent Israeli elections on the background of the volatile situation in the Arab world, now oscillating between hopes for democratization and volatility and violence - from Egypt's unsure steps towards democracy to the bloody civil war in Syria. He held visiting appointments at Yale, Cornel, University of California, Cardozo School of Law, Australian National University, Oxford and Northwestern University; and has been a Fellow at the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, both in Washington, D.C., the Institute for World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) in Moscow, and Collegium Budapest. He is Recurring Visiting Professor at the Central European University in Budapest. In 1996 he received the Israel Prize, the country's highest civilian decoration. Attempting to show why this is so, this course introduces students to Israeli politics, society, institutions and political practice from the distinctive perspective of the development of Israeli identity (identities). Special attention will be given to the sources of Israeli identity, the main players involved in its politics, and the role of regional war and the peace process in its development and inner conflicts. In particular, the course will trace the construction of Israeli identity, starting from the early times of Zionism and ending with the contemporary identity conflicts over the failed Oslo peace process with the Palestinians and the recent Intifada. I will try to show that there is a direct connection between Zionist constituting ideologies, the nature of Israel's institutions and society, and the split soul of Israeli identity. The Future of Ukraine
The future of Ukraine The future of Ukraine depends most of all on the Ukrainians themselves. They defended their democracy and future 10 years ago, during the Orange Revolution, and are standing up for those values again today. As Europeans grow disenchanted with the idea of a common Europe, people in Ukraine are fighting for that idea and for their country's place in Europe. Defending Ukraine from the authoritarian temptations of its corrupt leaders is in the interests of the democratic world. We cannot afford to turn our back on Ukraine. The new authoritarians in Kyiv should know that there will be a high price to pay for their repressive policies and for abandoning the European aspirations of the people. It is not too late for us to change things for the better and prevent Ukraine from becoming a dictatorship. Passivity in the face of the authoritarian turn in Ukraine and the country's reintegration into a newly expanding Russian imperial sphere of interests pose a threat to the European Union’s integrity. It is a threat not just to the moral integrity of the Union but possibly to its internal institutional integrity as well. Alongside the diplomatic and economic measures taken by individual states and the entire EU, independent democratic initiatives should make efforts to defend victims of repression, support civil society and strengthen independent media. The quality of any democracy depends to a great extent on what its citizens know about their country and the world. In Ukraine, the picture of the world is shaped by the authorities, who control most of the mass media, and Russian television channels faithful to President Putin.
