  • Angus Maritime Trail
Maritime Trail Walk in the steps of your ancestors www.angusheritage.com The Angus coastline is about 35 miles long, from north of Montrose to the outskirts of Dundee. When roads were poor, goods and people were carried along the coast by ship, and over a dozen distinct communities in Angus made their living from the vibrant and bustling coast. But the sea could be dangerous and unpredictable and many lives were lost through shipwrecks and storms. All Angus coastal settlements began as small villages, with residents earning part of their income from fishing. This fluctuated over time. Fishing villages grew if the conditions were right. Boats needed to be safe when not at sea, perhaps sailed into natural inlets on the rocky coast or hauled onto shingle beaches. Families needed ground where they could build houses with easy access to the shore, with somewhere Montrose harbour to land catches, prepare fish for sale and maintain boats, nets and lines. Houses could be built on narrow plots between the sea and coastal cliffs, or above those cliffs, with steep paths leading to the landing area. Some communities built harbours, providing shelter for moored boats and sites for fish markets and other maritime businesses. Montrose is a town that thrived as a seaport Montrose Basin - once known as the Land on the edge of rich farmland. The town’s of Sands - was a source of bait for fishing motto; Mare Ditat, Rosa Decorat (the sea communities along the Angus coastline. The enriches, the rose adorns) reflects its nature as shallow water, and regular exposure of sands, a trading town.

Introduction About this plan We are pleased to present the second South West Improvement Plan. This plan is one of four locality plans for Angus Health and Social Care Partnership (AHSCP) and is shaped around the vision of the AHSCP as set out in the Strategic Commissioning Plan 2019-22: This plan identifies the improvements that have been identified by the locality to enhance health and wellbeing outcomes in the South West. Importantly, much of the plan is based on what people who live in the South West and those currently involved in delivering health and social care in the area have said about how things could be better and what would make a difference. People have told us they want to live healthier, independent lives through access to services, to information, to local support networks and by anticipating need before it arises. This locality plan sets out the improvements that will be progressed in the South West and will contribute to the delivery of the AHSCP’s strategic priorities.

D., April)l930. INTRODUCTION. I Angus or Forfarshire is emphatically a microcosm of Scotland. Its various and distinct features whether geographical, historical, ecclesiastical, or archaeolog- :ical, mark the county as peculiarly Scottish. Angus presents valley, rook, and hill. Through the heart of the county runs that fine expanse of fertile land, known as Strathmore, the big valley. The Sidlaw Hills separ- :ate Strathmore from Strathbeg, the little valley, through which flows the Lunan. The eounty is bounded on the north by the "Braes of Angus", consisting of the spurs of the Grampians, and the valleys that are formed by them: Glenisla, Glenprosen, Clova, Lethnot, and Glenesk.
