  • Head Coach Sylvester Croom (PDF).Pdf
8 hen Mississippi State began its search in October 2003 for the 31st head coach in its long football history, the university sought an enthusiastic teacher with the energy to rebuild the Bulldog football program and an individual with an attention to detail who demands the Wdiscipline needed to bring structure to a vast organi- zation. On all accounts, MSU found its man when it hired Sylvester Croom on Dec. 1, 2003. “Sylvester Croom met all of the criteria we laid forth for the selection of a new head football coach at Mississippi State,” Director of Athletics Larry Templeton said. “We went after the best football coach, and we’re confident we found that individual in Sylvester Croom.” Since his hiring, Croom has undertaken the daunting task of constructing the foundation upon which the Bulldog football program will be rebuilt. There is little question that progress toward that goal has been achieved. In the three years since being named to head MSU’s football fortunes, the traits that made Croom the best coach for State have come to life. Croom became an in-demand speaker at alumni and booster events because of his forthright approach to directing the pigskin program. But his non-stop energy on the banquet circuit was only exceeded by the fervor with which he began shaping the Bulldog football operation. He estab- lished new offensive and defensive systems, paying particular attention to an attack which mirrored what he taught as a National Football League assistant. And despite the fact he had been away from the college game for 17 years as a pro coach, he has been unwavering in his demand for student-athlete accountability, on the field and off it.

  • Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Tradition
DETROIT’S THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION It was, legend says, a typically colorful, probably chilly, November day in 1622 that Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the new world's bounty with a sumptuous feast. They sat together at Plymouth Plantation (they spelled it Plimouth) in Massachusetts, gave thanks for the goodness set before them, then dined on pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, maize, cranberry sauce, turkey and who knows what else. Actually, fish was just as predominant a staple. And history books say pumpkin pie really debuted a year later. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that's how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in 1934. That's when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. "Dick" Richards, owner of the city's new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. Larry Paladino, Lions Pride, 1993 Four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 1934 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his first-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 75 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America’s passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit’s passion. DETROIT AND THANKSGIVING DAY No other team in professional sports can claim to be as much a part of an American holiday as can the Detroit Lions with Thanksgiving.

Perennial 500+ scoring team Mount Union has kept its record of consecutive seasons recording 500 or more points alive—at 20 [1995-2014]—with a 66-7 victory over Otterbien. It is team’s 21st overall. Thus far during the 2014 season, the Purple Raiders have scored at least 58 points in all 8 of its games; recording a 66-7 triumph. This was the school’s third highest score this season. In contrast, Morningside, currently the top ranked team in the weekly NAIA Coaches’ Poll, would register its lowest game score game of the season, a 44-21 triumph over Concordia (Neb.) to be a part of the scoring accomplishment. Both teams have two games and any possible post-season games to increase their tallies. With the teams reaching 500+ points in a single-season, the “record” of consecutive seasons remains in tack.
