CMCA AUDITED 8 - Claresholm Local Press, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 community Mental health Sparta House celebrates completion of new backyard By Rob Vogt Local Press Writer Sparta House has unveiled a new backyard that gives its members a place to enjoy some peace and tranquility. Sparta House is a clubhouse that provides an opportunity for people living with mental illness to regain confidence, to develop skills and to build meaningful supportive relationships. With this kind of support, men and women diagnosed with mental illness can work and become participating members of their community. They held a celebration hot dog barbecue for members and staff on Aug. 25 for everyone to see all that has been accomplished in the backyard. Planning has been under way for about a year, and was made possible by a $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation of and Southwestern Alberta. That was matched by funds Sparta House had for the project. “We designed the backyard based on feedback from the members,” said Carrie Dahl, executive director at Sparta House. “Based on how they wanted to use the space.” The transformation has been dramatic. A garden space has been added so Sparta House can expand on its program for container gardening for vegetables, as most members live in apartments.
