Highlights of the 2012 Budget: • It is the goal of the council to move ahead to get Pastor’s David Nichols’ salary closer to the Synod Salary Guidelines based on years of service. This year we are requesting a three percent increase. • Increase tithe to ELCA from seven to nine percent. • $100 to ELCA mission fund for Christ the King in South Jordan. • $8000 increase in church programs. • Increase in cost for Workman’s Compensation and Liability Insurance. Dave Warren (Linda Brown seconded) made a motion to accept the budget as proposed due to the fact that there was an increase of about four percent in income from the proposed budget for 2011. There has been an increase in membership which reflects positive growth in the congregation. Budget passes. Unfinished Business: Crossroads Food Co-op: An anonymous donor donated funds for 2011. Linda Brown worked with the people who were on the program. We welcomed ten new households into our congregation, including 17 adults and 2 children, even as we said good-bye to our dear friends in Christ: Mary and George Tyner, and Carola Gavros. We celebrated a vibrant congregational life that included hiking, camping, rafting, snow-shoeing, picnicking, Mardi Gras marching, and Santa Lucia dancing. We marched in the streets with the Pride Parade, the MLK Parade, and Las Posadas. We deepened our spiritual life with worship, music, prayer and bible study. We enriched our learning through Sunday School, Confirmation classes, and Living Questions. We adopted a new mission statement “an inclusive, compassionate community living God’s love in the world” and our Social Concerns group continues to help us live that out in many ways. We came in second place in the “Golden Celery” food drive for Crossroads – but this year we win back the trophy! We continue to live God’s love in our daily places of work and leisure. Visitors continue to tell me that they are seeking a warm, friendly, welcoming congregation that is active in the community. The majority of people who are joining our congregation are also seeking a congregation like ours that is Reconciling in Christ: intentional about our call to be allies and friends of the LGBT community in Salt Lake City. We are inclusive in our welcome, and we are compassionate in our out-reach to the greater community, and in-reach to our members. Our mission statement guides us to live the gospel in creation-centered ways as well, having compassion for the earth, air, and water we share in this valley. Mount Tabor has been selected to receive a Rocky Mountain Power/Blue Sky grant of over $22,000 for the installation of a 5.3 kW solar array in 2013. I want to thank Dan Wall, Lee Kreutzer, and Charles Peterson for all their time and effort in this solar project. Today we will have the opportunity to discuss the project proposal, and vote on its merits. It is a rare opportunity to have such funding that will help us lower our energy costs for many years to come, and reduce our carbon foot-print on the planet as stewards of God’s creation. Let’s “Go Green in 2013!” On Thanksgiving, I decided to list the blessings of this place using each letter in the words “Mount Tabor.” This is what I came up with: M is for Music; from Bach to Bluegrass. O is for Oktoberfest, and Tabor home-brewers! U is for Unending generosity; from those who built this house of worship, to all who give with grateful hearts to our shared mission and ministry today. N is for New members, whose gifts and enthusiasm and presence continue to make this community a dynamic and vibrant blessing to all.
