  • Kid Congo Powers Double Record Release Party
KID CONGO POWERS DOUBLE RECORD RELEASE PARTY KID CONGO POWERS DOUBLE RECORD RELEASE PARTY Tonic, March 3, 2006 Kid Congo Powers is celebrating the release of two albums on March 3, 2006 at Tonic. The first, Solo Cholo, is a career-spanning compilation focusing on the legendary guitarist’s work as a vocalist and songwriter from 1985 to the present. The second, Philosophy and Underwear, is the debut recording of his current New York band, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds - in which Kid not only sings, but also plays blistering dual guitars with ace Jack Martin (Knoxville Girls, Honeymoon Killers, etc.). After twenty-five years in the recording business (The Cramps’ Psychedelic Jungle was 1981), these two albums are the first full-length recordings that focus on Kid’s songs. The event also marks New York Night Train (www.newyorknighttrain.com) webzine’s debut as a record label. For this momentous occasion Kid has gathered an all-star cast of collaborators, friends, and favorites that will amount to one of the most unusual assemblages of underground figures in downtown history. The headliner is of course Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. The Birds will also back up Thalia Zedek (ex-Come, Live Skull, Uzi, etc.) on a few Gun Club numbers (Zedek is the vocalist who reminds Kid most of Jeffrey Lee Pierce). Another highlight of the evening is the reunion of the original New York version of Congo Norvell – Kid, Sally Norvell (actress, ex-Norvells, Prohibition, etc.), Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Vanity Set, ex-Sonic Youth, Cramps, etc.), Paul Wallfisch (Botanica, ex-Firewater, Love and Rockets, etc.), and Brian Emrich (film composer, ex-Foetus, Toasters, etc.).

  • Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index
Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state. Where the country is other than the United States, I listed the country Product manufacturer name, city and state. Address may be included if space allowed. The month and page number of each feature article or photograph. The index is sorted by year, and a title at the top of each page indicates which year.

  • Memoir, Mysticism, and Modern Feminist Poetry
Cantatas of the Wild: Memoir, Mysticism, and Modern Feminist Poetry By Melissa Dawn Keith A dissertation submitted in satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Associate Professor Geoffrey G. O’Brien, Chair Associate Professor Julia Bader Associate Professor Natalia Brizuela Fall 2012 Cantatas of the Wild: Memoir, Mysticism, and Modern Feminist Poetry Copyright © 2012 By Melissa Dawn Keith 1 Abstract Cantatas of the Wild: Memoir, Mysticism, and Modern Feminist Poetry By Melissa Dawn Keith Doctor of Philosophy in English Professor Geoffrey G. O’Brien, Chair In this dissertation, the introduction defines the erotic-mystical mode, using the poetry and prose of the five feminist writers that I argue constitute a core poetic movement. Based on their shared understandings of the centrality of this disruptive new paradigm—with important influences from English Romanticism—these poets create both lyric and prose works that position them as major leaders in feminist thought in the seventies. Collapsing conventional binaries, their works offer examples of how to live, on the deepest level, as life-affirming beings, regardless of gender, race, class, or sexuality, on a damaged, yet still vibrant, planet. They never deny difference, embracing all that is living, yet still grounded in faith in possibilities of collective communication. No one style best expresses the erotic mystical mode; yet it occupies a place, in the seventies, I argue, linked with memoir-poems, paving the way for the contemporary surge of women’s memoirs. The first chapter concerns itself with selectively surveying the erotic mystical mode transnationally and across periods, while dipping into recent American examples, creating a kind of ground for the sustained individual author readings of H.D.’s Sea Garden, chapter three, and the poetry of Adrienne Rich, 1951-1984, chapters five and seven.
