Still wearing the sports media personality hat, today Dermott is busy with Foxtel, providing match commentary and hosting his own show on Foxtel’s new channel Fox Footy. Throughout Dermott’s illustrious 20 year association at Channel Nine, Dermott hosted and provided special comments for Channel Nine’s Friday Night Football, was a regular panelist for the AFL Footy Show and was a weekly panelist for Nine’s Sunday Footy show. Dermott also had a 2 year stint hosting Channel Seven’s prime time football program, The Game as well as also hosted Sportsworld nationally and played an integral part in Channel Seven’s Sydney 2000 Olympic Games coverage. In 2007, Dermott joined the cast of the award winning Channel Nine prime-time travel show Getaway; marking his transition from AFL sport’s personality to national prime-time lifestyle host. Dermott’s versatility on TV has seen him take on several high profile roles. From being Steve Jacobs’ fill in weather man, to being a presenter on The Today show, to hosting Victoria’s popular travel show Postcards. Today, Dermott also continues his activities as a leading football media identity, as one of the key members of SEN radio’s AFL commentary team. Dermott’s playing career saw him play over 200 games mostly for Hawthorn, later playing at Collingwood and Sydney, kicking 464 goals in total over his professional career. Dermott, an icon of the game, is widely regarded as one of the best centre half forwards of all time. After retiring in 1995, Dermott took on the role as coach of the Australian team for the International Rules Series against Ireland for 2 years. Dermott’s success ‘on screen’ is a testament to his warm personality and fun loving approach to life. He’s the quintessential Aussie ‘larrikin’ with a big heart and love of adventure. Dermott is also a highly sought after keynote speaker at corporate and sporting functions, having emceed/spoken at events for Telstra, Melbourne Storm and the Financial Planners Association. He has also been involved in various marketing and advertising campaigns over the years for brands such as Bundaberg Rum, Stihl, Tip Top Bread, Adidas, Tabcorp, Toyota, Coca Cola and Myer Melbourne. Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This thesis offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand some Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have often wondered where I would be if I had not made the change from work to study in 1992. 'Magicians', 'freaks' and 'marvels': how the media 'Others' Indigenous AFL players. Assessment Item 3: Research Project Tom Smith 10877177 Question How does the media 'Other' Indigenous AFL players? Abstract Although overt racism has been virtually eradicated from the AFL, the media's depiction of Indigenous players covertly reinforces negative racial stereotypes. A content analysis of the round eight game between Hawthorn and Fremantle on May 19 2012 reveals a demonstrable difference in the way Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal footballers are portrayed by television, radio and newspaper commentators. This match is typical of the broader regime of representation of Indigenous players, which emphasises natural ability, physical superiority, instinct and 'magic' rather than mental discipline or cognitive skills. These imagined values simultaneously idolise the Aboriginal body and infantilise the Aboriginal mind, with the overall effect of 'spectacularising' the Aboriginal AFL player. With several Indigenous identities recently criticising this 'common sense' stereotype, this article investigates how existing representational practices 'Other' Indigenous AFL players and entrench the dominant racial hegemony. Whether we acknowledge it or not, most of us take some comfort in living, working and playing amongst our own. That's what makes it so hard to change our clubs to make them more inclusive. It's uncomfortable. Annoying. Can feel a little unnecessary. But just because it's hard (or uncomfortable, or annoying), doesn't mean you can get away with not doing it. It's everyone's responsibility to make sure our sports clubs – from the loftiest professional club right down to the lowliest amateur outfit – make space for everyone. To do that properly, you have to make room for "outsiders" – people from different cultural backgrounds, people who speak English as a second language, girls and women, gay people, people with disability. You can't just force people to come in and play by your rules. If they want to play, you have to change the rules so everyone feels at home. Yes, it's easier just to continue the status quo. But sports lovers are not supposed to shy away from something just because it's hard. We do what's necessary, and what's right. This conference will provide the inspiration and the practical support to ensure sports participants, administrators, volunteers and supporters have the tools they need to make our sports clubs the most inclusive on the planet.

To newly ap- pointed club coaches and offi cials thanks for coming on board and good luck in the ever chal- lenging times at club land. After consultation with all stakeholders a number of changes have taken place in the off season which will hopefully promote autonomy and competition from within the competition. These changes include • Reverting to a “Final Five” format from the previous “Top Eight” system. This will cer- tainly make jockeying for fi nals contention more competitive and value add to away wins and percentage boosters • Moving to stand alone status for the Duncanson/Todd Medal Presentation. In 2008 due to the Queensland “Hall of Fame” format at this years Grogan Medal Night time restraints and individual status of awards means the splitting of the format which will be addressed again post event • A stand alone Pineapple Hotel Cup Grand Final for the fi rst time in the past three years. This will also result in the Preliminary and Grand Finals being played at the best avail- able neutral venue with the Reserves playing at the same venue as a Curtain Raiser • And of course this new format user friendly Football Record which will be available for clubs to download and print off and control distribution rather than incur costs and sometimes be unable to pick up records from AFLQ. Once again this will be trialled in 2008 and reviewed post season.

This opening sequence of the film could be discussed in relation to the style of the documentary, the characters and the role of the definition cards throughout. Style that the documentary is made in - explain to students that the film was created using media recordings (archival footage) from the time. There is no new information, just a recount of events from 2013 until the end of the 2015 AFL season.
