Dear Santa, Thanks for the race car last year. Can I have another one, only this time one that is faster than my best friend’s race car? Ricky

Dear Santa, I wish you could leave a puzzle under the tree for me. And a toy for my sister. Then she won’t want to play with mine and I can have it to myself. Merry Christmas, Cassie

Dear Santa, You can send me one of everything from the boys’ section of the Sears catalogue. But nothing from the girls’ section. I can’t wait for Christmas to come. Kent

Dear Santa, I need a new skateboard for Christmas. The one I got now crashes too much. Band-aids would be OK too. David

Dear Santa, Would you rather I leave you cookies and milk or pizza? Dad says you’d probably like the pizza. Write back right away to let me know. Love, Lisa

Dear Santa, Please give me a tank, a jet fighter, 20 green soldiers, and a bazooka gun. I’m planning a surprise attack on my brother. So don’t tell anyone. Thanks, Danny

Dear Santa, How will you get into our house this year? We don’t have a chimney and my father just installed a very expensive security system. Julie

Dear Santa, Mommy says that you only bring presents for the good little boys. That isn’t fair. Brian TenPin Alley December 2011 11

that it has decided to return to a non-exempt tour for the 2012-13 season. For those of you who don’t keep up with the changes in the Professional Bowlers Association, permit me to explain. Prior to the 2004 PBA season, PBA tournaments were open to all PBA members as fli p side well as to non-members who passed certain average requirements. All of the bowlers would bowl in qualifying rounds to determine who would advance. Despite the fact that the cream would usually rise to the top, many PBA members would choose to enter the event, particu- with Rob Mautner larly if it was held near to where they lived, on the off-chance that they would have a good week and win or at least cash in the event. In 2004 in an attempt to elevate the status of professional bowling as a sport, the PBA went to an exempt format where, based on points earned during the 2003 season among Bowling Gone other criteria, players earned an exempt status. The exempt status meant that they did not have to bowl the tour qualifying round, and that they would be automatically paid an $1800 fee for each tournament in which they bowled. This ensured that the top names would always Global be seen by the fans. It also meant that only a few spots were left for each tournament for the non-exempt players in the field. The exempt tour concept was supposed to interest more Before getting started, please be advised that this article discusses results of PBA Tour- sponsors for the tour in order to raise bigger prize funds and elevate the status of the sport. This was also the plan for the WSOB with some Western Regional PBA events thrown in for good measure. The format for most of that, in its third year of existence, was to draw players from all over the world who would have the events saw the two hundred plus entrants divided into two squads, alternating bowling to spend limited travel and accommodation money to compete in several events during a first or second each day. Each squad bowled eight games of qualifying on fresh oil with the short period of time. It worked. Players came from all over the world to compete and win. Is it just me, or does anyone else find it strange globe, a high-profile world bowling tour is long overdue. that the bowler who lead after fourteen games of qualifying got nothing more than a cash incentive toward winning the title? Other than the cash incentive for the top qualifier, the top Ho-Ho-Ho four bowlers each had an equal opportunity to win the title. While the stepladder format cer- tainly has its disadvantages, at least the top qualifier only had to win one game against one opponent to win the title. With the eliminator format, the leader gained no advantage at all for leading qualifying. The qualifying rounds were pretty one-sided with dominating with first place finishes on the Viper and Scorpion patterns, and second place finishes on the Chameleon and Shark patterns. His overall overage after initial qualifying rounds was a staggering 239.81. After the top sixteen casher’s round, he led the field by about 300 pins. With this stellar perfor- mance, Rash never won a title. What happened? First of all, the TV finals were not contested in the Southpoint bowling center. They were contested on specially built lanes that were constructed in one of the Southpoint ballrooms. If lane surface and topography is half as important as most of us believe that it is, then the advantage that Rash had during qualifying was pulled out from under him like the proverbial rug. The rug landed under Australian . During the TV finals Belmonte was the dominating player, winning three of the eight titles up for grabs: The Chameleon Champion- ship where he defeated Sean Rash 268-191, The Shark Championship where he defeated Chris Barnes 243-213, and the Elite Players Championship where he defeated Mike DeVaney 255-238. Despite the dominating performances by Rash during qualifying and Belmonte during the TV Finals, the two stories that caught most bowlers attention revolved around bowling styles and the origins of the bowlers. First, in terms of style, four of the eight tournaments were won by two-handed bowlers: the three by Belmonte, and the World Championship title that was captured by Osku Palermaa when he defeated veteran Ryan Shafer by a score of 203-177. The times certainly are a-changin’! Secondly, and perhaps more significant was the fact the not one singles title was won by a U.S. bowler. The Viper Championship was won by England’s Stewart Williams (versus Ildemaro Ruiz from Venezuela). The Scorpion Champi- onship was won by another English bowler, Dom Barrett (over Sean Rash). Finally, the Car- men Salvino Classic was won by Columbian Andres Gomez when he defeated The Big Nasty, CANDLES MISTLETOE , 246-207. They said I can’t. That is why I must.

The odds have been stacked against me since the day I was born. No one expected me to succeed. Sheer logic wouldn’t allow them to accept the magnitude of my capabilities. But the doubters. The naysayers. They’re what fuel me. I do not fear the odds, the expectations or the logic. For the second you send me down the lane, I will defy them all.
