Overnight in port, Palermo and for the next eleven nights, aboard Aegean Odyssey. (D) Saturday, October 5 - VENICE Syracuse Our full day in Venice begins with a boat ride down the beautiful Giudecca Canal to St. Mark’s Square and Venice’s bustling stone boardwalk. Walk to St. Mark’s Basilica, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, and to the Doge’s Palace, a 14th-century Gothic masterpiece. Afterward, enjoy free time around St. Mark’s Square. This evening, we will be treated to a private tour of remarkable St. Mark’s Basilica and the breathtaking sight of its famous mosaics illuminated in a spectacular light show. Overnight in port. Today a UNESCO World Heritage site, the palace complex is a vibrant warren of museums, shops, and restaurants alongside medieval fortifications, pre-Romanesque churches, and Gothic chapels. After the tour, you will have time at leisure to explore independently. PM optional tour (additional cost) to the delightful nearby island of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage site lined with architectural jewels that include weathered Romanesque churches and outstanding Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Venetian period. Tuesday, October 8 - AT SEA | KORCULA AM cruise along the Dalmatian Coast and its beautiful islands, with an early PM arrival at the island of Korcula for an excursion into Old Town, where we will visit the impressive Cathedral of St. Mark, the 14th-century Bishop’s Palace, and the 16th-century Gabrielli Palace to view the City Museum’s array of Greek and Roman artifacts. The remainder of the day is at leisure, and Aegean Odyssey sets sail late tonight. (B,L,D) Wednesday, October 9 - DUBROVNIK Early AM arrival in Dubrovnik to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site, the best- preserved medieval walled city in the Mediterranean. Our walking tour of the Old Town takes us along the city’s main street to the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries, the latter home to Europe’s oldest pharmacy (founded in 1318 and still in existence), and past such landmarks as the Sponza Palace, Baroque Church of St. Blaise, Onofriou’s Fountain, and Cathedral of Our Lady. Relax and explore the Old Town on your own this PM. Aegean Odyssey sets sail this evening. (B,L,D) Thursday, October 10 - AT SEA Relax, attend onboard lectures, and enjoy the ship’s amenities as she cruises to Sicily. (B,L,D) Friday, October 11 - SYRACUSE, Sicily, Italy Arrive in the AM for a tour of Syracuse, surveying the city’s outstanding collection of Greek and Roman ruins such as the Roman amphitheater of Augustus; the 2nd-century B.C. Altar of Hieron; and the 5th-century Greek theater; and visit the Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi. Aegean Odyssey departs in the early PM. (B,L,D) Saturday, October 12 - PALERMO | MONREALE | PALERMO Early AM arrival in Palermo to explore the 12th century Palatine Chapel, a miraculous fusion of Latin, Byzantine, and Arabic architectural design; San Giovanni degli Eremiti, a 12th century Norman church; and Palermo Cathedral. PM excursion to the 12th century Monreale Cathedral, located just outside Palermo and considered by many to be the most beautiful Norman church in Italy. Also visit the Benedictine cloisters and have free time in the main square. This evening, there will be a very special optional excursion (additional cost): a private visit to the exquisite Palazzo Gangi, which is especially noted for its Sicilian Baroque ballroom decorated with Murano Above, Korcula, Croatia. Sunday, October 13 - PALERMO | AT SEA AM at leisure in Palermo. Aegean Odyssey departs around lunchtime for a cruise past Stromboli, one of the Aeolian Islands just north of Sicily, an active volcano that has been erupting almost continuously since 1932. (B,L,D) Monday, October 14 - AT SEA | SORRENTO | POMPEII or HERCULANEUM | SORRENTO AM at sea, cruising along the enchanting Amalfi Coast. There will be a choice of PM excursions, to either Pompeii or Herculaneum. Ancient Pompeii was engulfed by ash and pyroclastic flows from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in August of A.D. 79, and what was preserved underneath is the unique record of Roman life we see today. The nearby town of Herculaneum was also destroyed, yet preserved, by the same eruption. Today, in the many well-preserved structures around the site, inlaid marble floors, paintings, mosaics, and carbonized woods are still visible. Afterward, return to central Sorrento and either explore independently or return to the ship. Overnight aboard ship in Sorrento. (B,L,D) Tuesday, October 15 - SORRENTO Spend the day relaxing and/or exploring Sorrento on your own, or take an optional, full-day excursion (additional cost) along the Amalfi Drive, considered by many to be the most beautiful drive in the world. Along the streets of the town of Amalfi, architecture from the th9 to 12th centuries reflects a period when the city wielded enormous sea power. Enjoy free time to wander along the marina or browse the delightful shops and cafés around the fountain before a 3-course lunch at a ristorante on the Coast and a scenic return drive to Sorrento. Aegean Odyssey sets sail this evening. (B,L,D) Wednesday, October 16 - CIVITAVECCHIA | ROME | DISEMBARK Early AM arrival in Civitavecchia. Disembark Aegean Odyssey and transfer to our Rome hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax and explore independently.Overnight at our Rome hotel for two nights. (B) Thursday, October 17 - ROME | VATICAN CITY | ROME AM exploration of the iconic ancient sites of Rome, such as the Colosseum, the biggest and most imposing arena in the Roman world; and the Roman Forum, with the remains of grand temples, triumphal arches, and a labyrinth of governmental buildings. Also visit St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, inside of which an almost unimaginable wealth of art awaits. The rest of the day is at leisure in Rome. (B) Friday, October 18 - ROME | HOME Transfer to Rome airport for flights homeward. (B) Lecturer and Host Nancy C. Wilkie is a distinguished archaeologist and professor who has lectured on numerous study tours worldwide, including two previous cruises aboard Aegean Odyssey since 2011. She is the William H. Laird Professor of Classics, Anthropology, and the Liberal Arts, and Co-Director of the Archaeology Concentration at Carleton College, where she has been on the faculty since 1974. Nancy has worked on archaeological projects in Greece, Egypt, and Nepal, and has authored more than 30 articles and co-edited three books on archaeology. She is also an Honorary President of the Archaeological Institute of America, and in 2009-10 Nancy served as the AIA’s Charles Eliot Norton lecturer, one of the highest honors that the Institute bestows. On this program, Nancy will also be representing the AIA, one of our co-sponsors. Gras, the father of Business History in the United States, argued that the era of mercantile capitalism was defined by the figure of the “sedentary merchant,” who managed his business from home, using correspondence and intermediaries, in contrast to the earlier “traveling merchant,” who accompanied his own goods to trade fairs. Taking this concept as its point of departure, this essay focuses on the predominantly Italian merchants who controlled the long‐distance East‐West trade of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Until the opening of the Atlantic trade, the Mediterranean was Europe’s most important commercial zone and its trade enriched European civilization and its merchants developed the most important premodern mercantile innovations, from maritime insurance contracts and partnership agreements to the bill of exchange and double‐entry bookkeeping. Emerging from literate and numerate cultures, these merchants left behind an abundance of records that allows us to understand how their companies, especially the largest of them, were organized and managed.
