WCSA AGM in Whitehorse, YK 1 President's Message On behalf of Softball Alberta, our Board of Directors and Staff, welcome to the 2020 softball season in Alberta. This promises to be another exciting year for our game not only here in our province but with the Olympics being held in Tokyo. We continue to strive to find ways to improve our programs and services. We are proud to be the true official game of summer and the only true Canadian organization in Alberta. From the Timbits program for our youngest and newest members to our adult softball athletes who continue to pursue their passion of softball, we look forward to another great year of ball. Your provincial organization continues to bring forward new initiatives (such as the new provincial category), development, promotion, and advocacy that is important to everyone in the province. I would like to encourage our members to attend the Zone Meetings in your area. A listing of dates and locations can be found on our website. Need some information or have a concern you would like to discuss reach out to your District Organizer. Invite them to your association meeting, the District Organizers are a good resource. Without our hosts for Provincials and Westerns we would not be able to complete these championships. Thank you to the organizing committees and the volunteers that make these such a success. This year Alberta is proud to host the U16 A/B Boys and Girls in Strathmore. Strathmore Girls Fastpitch Softball Association will provide a great experience for these young athletes. Mark your calendar for August 6-9 to go and support these teams and hosts. Lethbridge will host the 2020 Alberta Summer Games from July 23-26. We wish all the athletes and officials a great championship filled with great games and great friendships. Canada Summer Games will be held in Niagara in the summer of 2021. Check the website for more details on who is eligible to participate and tryout information. This is an exciting year with Softball in Olympics in Tokyo. Congratulation to umpire, Frankie Billingsly who will represent Alberta and Canada during the games. As well, Team Canada pool athlete - Morgan Rackel will hear in May if she is selected as one of the 15 athletes who will represent Canada. The softball games are scheduled from July 22 -27 with medal presentations on July 28. In closing, I would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support. Good luck to all players, coaches, and umpire as we hope each of you have a very successful year. While winning is important, success comes by your personal development and the lifelong friendships we hope will be fostered.   • 1944 All-American Girls Baseball League
    HISTORY MAKER BASEBALL 1944 All-American Girls Professional Baseball League One of the top movies of 1992 was the film “A League of Their Own,” starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna, a story about a women’s professional baseball league formed during World War II. The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning glowing reviews, topping the box office by its second week of release, and earning over $150 million in ticket sales. The catch phrase, “There’s no crying in baseball!”—uttered by Rockford Peaches manager Jimmy Dugan (played by Hanks) made the American Film Instutute’s list of Greatest Movie Lines of All-Time, and the film itself was selected by the Library of Congress in 2012 for preservation in the National Film Registry, as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” Interestingly, when the film opened in ’92, relatively few of the people who saw it knew that it was based on an actual, real-life league—many thought it was complete fiction. But the fictionalized account portrayed in the movie was, in fact, based on a very real story. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was formed in 1943 out of concern that with so many players serving in World War II, big league baseball might be forced to suspend operations. The idea was that perhaps women could keep the game active and on the minds of baseball fans until the men could return from the war. The new league was bankrolled by big league owners, conducted nation-wide tryouts to stock its four inaugural teams with talented women players, and began competitive play in the spring of ’43—just as the movie’s screenplay detailed.
