Thai Fight World Battle at Macao’s Cotai Arena this June Featuring 16 top Muay Thai fighters from around the globe (Macao, May 15, 2014) – Following a string of highly successful boxing and mixed martial arts events over the past year at The Venetian® Macao, the iconic integrated resort is now bringing to Macao another combat sport event not to be missed. The Thai Fight World Battle event will feature 16 Muay Thai fighters, headlined by Yodsanklai Fairtex, Sudsakorn Sor Klinmee, Iquezang Kor Rungthanakeat and Saiyok Pumpanmuang Windysport, battling in an Asia vs. Europe competition at the Cotai Arena Saturday, June 28. Thailand’s 28-year- old Yodsanklai prides himself with a fight record of 218 wins, 41 losses and 1 draw as well as multiple prominent titles, including the WPMF (World Professional Muay Thai Federation) world super welterweight championship, WBC (World Boxing Council) Muay Thai world super welterweight championship, Lumpinee Stadium welterweight and flyweight championships, and he was the first champion of the reality TV series “The Contender Asia;” Sudsakorn, 27, was the champion of Thai Fight Kard Chuek 2013 and has earned a fight record of 222 wins, 35 losses and 3 draws; 24-year-old Iquezang comes to the Cotai Arena with a fight record of 127 wins, 15 losses and 5 draws; and Saiyok, 30, started practising Muay Thai 19 years ago and won six Thai Fight tournaments between 2012 and 2013 – three of them by knockout – earning him a fight record of 212 wins, 41 losses and 1 draw. Jones Mahidol University International College Pawinpon Theerawong Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand Abstract: Public and cultural diplomacy are tools for states to enhance their soft power in international affairs. Sports diplomacy is becoming an increasingly important arena for states to enhance their image among foreign publics and increase their country’s visibility via the attractiveness of their cultural asset. This article explores Thailand’s cultural diplomacy by the support given by the Thai state in order to make Muay Thai (Thai boxing) an official Olympic sport. The role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Muay Thai athletes will be examined to find how the Thai state is attempting to increase its soft power by cultural sport diplomacy.
