(ni)je šport OLIMP ■ 4 ■ Dragi čitatelji, vrijeme doista brzo protječe; ljeto je ostalo za nama i već, eto, pišem uvodnik za treći broj „Olimpa“ u ovoj godini. To samo govori da smo zakoračili u jesen, 42 nadam se ipak odmorniji i s više elana i energije, makar su neki već zacijelo i zaboravili na svoj godiš- nji odmor. Iako je za većinu ljeto vrijeme odmora od posla i obaveza, to se ne odnosi na naše športaše koju su prošla dva-tri mjeseca bili vrlo aktivni i rezultatski uspješni. Moram tu svakako istaći rezultat braće Sin- ković koju su prvim mjestom na SP u veslanju postali (ponovo) svjetski prvaci i usput potvrdili sudjelova- nje na OI u Tokiju 2020. godine, što je uspjelo i njiho- Glavni tajnik Hrvatskog vom kolegi Damiru Martinu. olimpijskog odbora Zašto sam istaknuo baš taj dvojac? Zato svima onima koji imaju tu mogućnost, želim ostvarenje tog cilja, a svi mi u HOO-u učinit ćemo sve kako bi im stvorili maksimalno dobre uvjete za realizaciju tog njihovog sna. Hrvatski olimpijski odbor po 13. put dodijelio je Nagrade HOO-a „Dražen Pe- trović“ darovitim mladim športašima i ekipama, dodijelivši priznanja najvećim nadama za izvanredne športske rezultate i športski razvoj. I must certainly point out the results of the Sinković brothers, who became (again) the World Champions by winning the first place at the World Rowing Championships, confirming thus their participation at the Summer Olympics 2020 in Tokyo, as well as their colleague Damir Martin. Why did I just point out that pair? Because they represent the pattern of how top athletes should act and behave both as people and athletes. Croatian Olympic Committee presented, for the 13th time, its “Dražen Petrović” 60 awards to gifted young athletes and teams, to the greatest hopes for outstand- ing sports results and sports development. And this year’s competition was fierce Od Olimpa do Olimpa which, of course, is great news for all of us in the Croatian sports. Po slijedu utemeljenja ovo je druga HOO-ova nagrada (nakon Trofeja HOO-a koji od 2001. godine nosi ime Matije Ljubeka), i od iznimnog je značaja za cijelu domaću šport- sku zajednica budući da iz godine u godinu ukazuje na neiscrpni po- tencijal hrvatskog športa. Povjerenstvo za izbor laureata, na čelu s veslačkim olimpijcem i dopredsjednikom HOO-a Dami- rom Martinom, odlučivalo je o do- bitnicima potkraj kolovoza, ali bez svoga čelnika koji se tih dana borio (i izborio) za olimpijsku normu za Biserka Petrović, majka Dražena Petrovića, i Franko Grgić Tokio iduće godine. Statusom dvostrukog laureata/laureatkinje istog izbora u dosadašnjoj povijesti Draženove nagrade “počašćena” je još jedino tenisačica Ana Konjuh 2013. godine. Vlasnik dvaju plivačkih svjetskih zlata s juniorskog SP-a u Budimpe- šti (na 800 i 1500 metara) te svjet- ski rekorder na 1500 metara, ima u kolekciji i dva zlatna odličja na istim dionicama s EYOF-a u Bakuu, ali i olimpijsku normu za Tokio u obje discipline. - Dobiti Draženovu nagradu san je svakog dječaka ili djevojčice koji se bave športom - rekao je Grgić, otkrivši u kasnijem razgovoru da tijekom odmora pliva uglavnom u morskom plićaku zato što se plaši velikih dubina. OLIMP ■ 8 ■ Hrvatska juniorska reprezentacija u rukometu na pijesku (najuspješnija mlada ženska ekipa) Hrvatska kadetska rukometna reprezentacija (najuspješnija mlada momčad) ■ 9 ■ OLIMP NAGRADA DRAŽEN PETROVIĆ “Uz njegovo ime sve redom su jedinice (prva mjesta!), treba pri- paziti da mu ta ‘zaraza’ ne prijeđe u naviku i u školi” - našalio se u poruci na Facebooku HOO-a jedan pratitelj, uz dodatak da mu je Fran- ko Grgić kandidat za naj-športaša u svim kategorijama. Naravno, ostale kategorije su rezervirane za neke druge mlade junake i junakinje. Nažalost, sve- čanosti u poslovično pretijesnom Muzejsko-memorijalnom centru Dražena Petrovića u Zagrebu, zbog priprema u Španjolskoj nije nazo- čila najuspješnija mlada športašica u Hrvatskoj - džudašica Ana Vikto- rija Puljiz. Prošlogodišnja najveća nada hrvatskog športa, u potpunosti je opravdala taj epitet i novom trofej- nom godinom zaslužila Draženovu Sanda Dubravčić uručila je nagradu najvećoj nadi hrvatskog športa Antoniji Ružić nagradu u glavnoj kategoriji. Eu- ropsko juniorsko srebro i bronca s Olimpijskih igara mladih (do 44 kg) te zlato na EYOF-u u Bakuu i europ- ska kadetska bronca (do 48 kg), na- java su blistave seniorske karijere.

This time in China. 21Century Strel, who will turn 50 this summer, plans to spend about two months swimming the majority of the 4,600-kilometre river that in many ways is a symbol for China. He will swim during the day and break at night to sleep in a boat, only to start again the next morning from the spot where he finished the day before. The aquatic journey - organized in co-operation with China International Sport Travel Company - will likely start at the beginning of June in Batang in Southwest China's Sichuan Province and end in China's financial hub Shanghai. "Ni hao, wo shi Ma Ding, wo xiang yao you chang jiang (Hi, I am Martin and I want to swim Yangtze River)," Strel declared yesterday in Beijing in hesitant Chinese. The bulky Slovenian has a rich experience in marathon swimming. He conquered the Danube River in Europe in 2000, and set the Guinness world record by swimming 3004 kilometres in 58 days. He beat his own record two years later with another mighty challenge - swimming the 3,797 kilometres from the Mississippi's source to its estuary in 68 days.

    OPEN WATER HEROES The world’S LAST SUPERHERO It’s been four years since Slovenian endurance swimmer Martin Strel became the first person to swim the length of the Amazon. Sarah Warwick caught up with the hard-drinking, hard-swimming legend as he attempts what could be his biggest challenge yet… Is Martin Strel super human? There are many moments in the film Big River Man, made about his epic, 66-day journey down the length of the Amazon, that make you think he must be. The very idea of his 3,272 mile swim is terrifying: a man takes on one of the longest and widest rivers in the world, a place known for its lethal sharks, snakes and man-eating fish. Despite suffering dizziness, nausea, diarrhea and sunstroke – and 22 members of his 25-strong support team ending up in hospital – he completes it, by swimming 52 miles a day every day for two months. Aside from the pain, what those who’ve seen the film of his 2007 journey will remember is the extraordinary tenacity and fortitude of Martin Strel – qualities that lead one member of his team to refer to him on camera as "the world’s last super hero". People will also remember the suggestion of madness that runs through the film: Martin’s obsessional consumption of wine and horse burgers; burgeoning paranoia and fear of local Amazonian villagers; defiance of health professionals who tell him he could die at any point; and an insanity born of mental exhaustion that culminates in Martin trying to electrocute his own head with what looks like a car battery.

    Rivers of the World The Nile The Nile is traditionally considered to be the longest river in the world. It is 4132 miles (6650 km) long – that’s nearly seven times the distance from John o’ Groats at the top of Scotland to Land’s End at the bottom of England! When most people think of the Nile, they think of Egypt but surprisingly, only 20% of the river is in Egypt - it also flows through other countries including Uganda and Ethiopia before ending at the Mediterranean Sea. Some people disagree about where the river starts, but it is now believed to be in the hills of Burundi. The River Nile makes the land nearby good for growing. This is why the ancient Egyptians settled there, living and farming along the river producing food for themselves and their animals. The river became important for water and transport. The Rhine The Rhine flows through Germany and is 766 miles (1233km) long. It also travels through another five countries before reaching the North Sea in the Netherlands. Its source is a small stream coming from a glacier in the Swiss Alps (the mountains in Switzerland). The Rhine has been used to transport food and other goods since Roman times and there are many castles found on its banks, such as Maus (mouse) Castle. Many years ago, the Rhine was labelled one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. It was also badly affected by a chemical factory fire in 1986. Since then, a lot of effort has been put in to clean it up including making the drinking water safe.

  • The Project World Days of Slovene Culture
    THE PROJECT WORLD DAYS OF SLOVENE CULTURE Dear Reader, The booklet before you offers a brief presentation of Slovene culture. The country and the nation, History, Natural and cultural history, The economy, Tourism and cuisine, Science and technology, Literature, Music, Art, architecture and design, Stage and film, and Sport are the areas focused on within this year’s extensive international promotional project World Days of Slovene Culture, organised within the programme Slovene at Foreign Universities. The goal of this year’s, eighth joint project involving Slovene Studies departments and teachers of Slovene from around the world was to draw up e-material for teaching Slovene culture at foreign universities. Working with the teachers who a year earlier formed online working groups, overviews and presentations (PPT) were prepared using current and archived materials, including internet links and other sources, to which were added tasks for students. All the material is available in the e-classroom World Days of Slovene Culture and teachers will be able to adapt it to their learning programmes and the needs of their students – their knowledge of Slovene, familiarity with individual areas of Slovene culture, and the study goals and intercultural goals of learning within which Slovene culture appears at universities around the world. The e-classroom will continue to be regularly updated with new content. At over 50 universities, the project World Days of Slovene Culture will conclude in the traditional way with numerous events during the week from 3 December, when in Slovenia we celebrate the Happy Day of Slovene Culture, until 9 December 2016.

Ongoing and future water resource development projects are subject to worldwide scrutiny, and it is proper that today’s student and tomorrow’s water professional have first-hand knowledge of the realities and complexities of issues that extend well beyond hydraulics, hydrology and related engineering disciplines to account for the historical, cultural, social, economic, and ethical issues related to water resources. Since 1997, IPWRM has focused on particular water resources projects in selected world regions, including the Narmada Valley in India, the Tama River in Japan, the Three-Gorges Dam in mainland China and the Feitsuei Reservoir on Taiwan Island, the lower Danube River basin in Hungary, Poland and Romania, the Itaipu Dam – the largest in the world- on the border of Brazil and Paraguay, and the Southeast Anatolia Project in Turkey.

    Slovenian Innovators: From the Workings of the Earth to Travels in Space Located in south central Europe and framed by neighbors Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea, Slovenia has a population of two million. In land mass, compact Slovenia is roughly equivalent in size to the state of New Jersey. While coming from a modest-sized country, Slovene scientists and transportation pioneers have added many key innovations to the global body of knowledge. Many Slovenian scientists and other talented individuals have earned international acclaim; this presentation offers a sampling of ten Slovene innovators through the centuries. Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641-1693) Early Slovene Polymath and Inventor Baron Janez Vajkard Valvasor was born in 1641 in Ljubljana. Graduating from a Jesuit school in 1658 at the age of seventeen, he did not choose to continue his studies at a university but decided instead to broaden his horizons on a 14-year journey across Europe and northern Africa. Valvasor is considered the founder of scientific literature on Slovenian territory. His fundamental work is the 15-volume The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, finished in 1689 – the work is a rich encyclopedia on the land and history of the Slovenian people. In his work, Valvasor included numerous inventions, designs and descriptions which were far beyond their time, such as advances in tunnel design, new methods of casting sculpture, and presentations of the first maps of Slovenia and neighboring territories. Valvasor’s hydrological research on Lake Cerknica (pictured here in a winter scene) won him the membership of the Royal Society in London and established Valvasor as a pioneer in the study of karst landforms phenomena.
