The Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s genealogy traces the lineage of Joseph back to Abraham through David, through Solomon. Luke’s genealogy traces the lineage of Mary back to Adam through David, through Nathan.

2 Samuel 7:12-17 The Line of Christ through David 12 When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your [a]descendant after you, who will come forth from [b]you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, 15 but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure before [c]Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

Genesis 49:8-12 The Line of Christ through Judah 8 “Judah, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father’s sons shall bow down to you. 9 “Judah is a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He [a]couches, he lies down as a lion, And as a [b]lion, who [c]dares rouse him up? 10 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, [d]Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. 11 “[e]He ties his foal to the vine, And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; He washes his garments in wine, And his robes in the blood of grapes. 12 “His eyes are [f]dull from wine, And his teeth [g]white from milk.

Genesis 15:1-5 The Line of Christ through Abraham After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; [a]Your reward shall be very great.” 2 Abram said, “O Lord [b]GOD, what will You give me, since I [c]am childless, and the [d]heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “[e]Since You have given no [f]offspring to me, [g]one born in my house is my heir.” 4 Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own [h]body, he shall be your heir.”5 And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your[i]descendants be.”

Genesis 17:17-21 The Line of Christ through Isaac, not 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!” 19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name [a]Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his [b]descendants after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall [c]become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.”

Genesis 25:19-26 The Line of Christ through Jacob 19 Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham [a]became the father of Isaac; 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the [b]Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the [c]Aramean, to be his wife. 21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD [d]answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the LORD. 23 The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.” 24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so his name was called [e]Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

Galatians 3:16-18, 26-29 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is [a]based on law, it is no longer [b]based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.

26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is [j]neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you [k]belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s[l]descendants, heirs according to promise.

Conception and Birth of Jesus 18 Now the birth of Jesus [r]Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been [s]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned [t]to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for [u]the Child who has been [v]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for [w]He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME [y]IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” 24 And Joseph [z]awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 [aa]but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

 Betrothal…is a legal relationship in which Mary was considered the wife of Joseph before they are actually married. The relationship was based on promise and could only be dissolved by divorce. Deuteronomy 22:23-30 established this distinction. She was to be a virgin prior to the official marriage. Joseph’s kindness and righteousness are established prior to the angelic visitation.  Conceived by the Holy Spirit…establishes God as being the Father, and Joseph as NOT his father, but rather the stepfather. This was disbelieved by the religious leaders. John 8:38-42 has Jesus claim God as His Father, the priests claim Abraham as theirs…and then imply that Jesus was a son of fornication…and God was really their Father.  Dreams…God can speak through a dream and visions. Testimonies are found in OT & NT. Abraham (Genesis 15:1): God used a vision to restate the Abrahamic Covenant, Abimelech (Genesis 20:1-7): Abraham's wife, telling him not to touch Sarah. Jacob (Genesis 28:10-17): Jacob, dream of a ladder reaching to heaven received God's promise Joseph (Genesis 37:1-11): Joseph's family would one day bow to him in respect Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker (Genesis 40): Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker. Pharaoh (Genesis 41): Pharaoh himself had a dream which Joseph interpreted, a horrible famine. Samuel (1 Samuel 3): God told Samuel that judgment was coming upon the sons Eli. The Midianite and Amalekite armies (Judges 7:12-15):, Gideon overheard an enemy soldier’s dream Solomon (1 Kings 3:5): God gave Solomon the famous offer: "Ask what you wish Me to give you." Daniel (Daniel 2; 4): allowing him to interpret a foreign ruler's dream. Daniel had many dreams. Zacharias (Luke 1:5-23): he would soon have an important son, John the Baptist. Joseph (:20; 2:13): 1) pregnancy was of God, 2) take his family to Egypt, 3) return home. Pilate's wife (Matthew 27:19): During Jesus’ trial, Jesus was innocent, Pilate should do nothing to him Ananias (Acts 9:10): to visit Paul, the persecutor of Christians. Paul regained his sight. Cornelius (Acts 10:1-6): an angel who told him where to find Simon Peter and to send for him and listen. Peter (Acts 10:9-15): rooftop of a house in Joppa, a vision of animals lowered in something like a sheet. Paul: (Acts 16:9-10) preach in Macedonia. (Acts 18:9-11) stay in Corinth. (2 Cor 12:1-6) vision of heaven. John (Revelation): Nearly the entire book of Revelation is a vision he had while on the island of Patmos.  Jesus…Greek for the Hebrew name, Jeshua (Joshua), meaning “YHWH is salvation.”  Christ…Greek for the Hebrew word, Meshiah (Messiah), meaning “Anointed One of YHWH” His purose is defined as “saving His people from their SIN,” not from Roman oppression.  Prophetic fulfillment…the virgin shall be with child…bear a son…call His name Immanuel

Isaiah 7…War against Jerusalem 7 Now it came about in the days of Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Aram and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of , went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not [a]conquer it. 2 When it was reported to the house of David, saying, “The Arameans [b]have camped in Ephraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake [c]with the wind. 3 Then the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son[d]Shear-jashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway to the [e]fuller’s field, 4 and say to him, ‘Take care and be calm, have no fear and do not be fainthearted because of these two stubs of smoldering firebrands, on account of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah. (Shear-jashub “A remnant shall return”)

The Child Immanuel 10 Then the LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 “Ask a sign for yourself from the LORD your God; [j]make it deep as Sheol or high as [k]heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD!” 13 Then he said, “Listen now, O house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God as well? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a [l]virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name [m]Immanuel. 15 He will eat curds and honey [n]at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16 For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken.

 Longest Name in Bible…Isaiah 9:6…Pele-Ya’ats-El-Gibbor-Abi-Ad-Sar-Shalom …“Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

 Fulfillment in the OT…using the same words with a different focus, the OT reference was to establish a time table…a young maiden (virgin) would become pregnant (9 months), bears a son that represents that God is with His people, before the boy is 12 yrs old, deliverance would come. Assyria & Israel fell within 12 years…Damascus was captured & Israel was fallen.  Fulfillment in the NT…the emphasis is on the virgin nature of the maiden. The angel says that this fulfillment would have a virgin give birth while still a virgin. This is to establish divinity, not a timetable for deliverance.  Perpetual Virginity of Mary asserts Mary's "real and perpetual virginity even in the act of giving birth to Jesus the Son of God made Man". According to the doctrine, Mary was ever-virgin for the whole of her life, making Jesus her only biological son, whose conception and birth are held to be miraculous. Biblical Evidence Contrary: “Joseph kept her a virgin UNTIL she gave birth to a Son…” Matthew 12:46 refers to Jesus mother and brothers who came to see Him. Matthew 13:55-56 gives the names of four of His brothers, and refers to his sisters…"Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
