After high school, he worked as a journalist for the local papers until 1892, when he moved to St. Louis to become night city editor of the St. Louis Globe Democrat. His journalism career includes the 1895 appointment as political editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and his coverage of the 1896 presidential campaign and election and speaking tours of William Jennings Bryan. Following the 1896 election, Reeves retired from newspaper work and became deputy assessor of St. Louis. In 1901, he was appointed to head a joint committee to promote Missouri’s participation in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition to be held in St. Louis in 1904. His title was Chief, Department of Domestic Exploitation. Having obtained a law degree from Benton College of Law in St. Louis in 1902, Reeves opened a law practice following the Exposition.
