MAZEL TOV! Innovation Grant Winner, Amanda Budd, Launches a Podcast

Amanda Budd, the events and marketing coordinator at American Jewish Committee, is a young writer, blogger, and designer who had a burning Jewish idea. Inspired by story-focused podcasts like This American Life, and her great grandmother’s tales of escaping Berlin during the Nazi era, Budd decided to create Jewish Today Pod — celebrating stories of how being Jewish influences peoples’ lives. Armed with a $600 Bloom Grant from Federation Innovation, she has just launched her podcast, available on Spotify and Anchor.

Amanda exemplifies the innovative spirit that is taking hold in Jewish Atlanta. She leveraged her $600 brilliantly, purchasing a microphone, learning Garage Band, and using the Audacity app for editing and recording. "I wanted catchy original theme music and found a guy in Kenya who composed it for me."

Amanda is the daughter of Jeff & Carrie Budd. Mazel Tov Amanda!

VIRTUAL HAPPENING AT BETH SHALOM Sisterhood Book Club...“DO YOU LOVE TO READ?” 7:30pm via Zoom

Join us virtually for our monthly Book Club meetings when we read the newest books by popular authors. These are the books for discussion during June and July :

June 24th - “The Narrow Space” by Elisha Waldman July 22nd - “Mistress of the Ritz” by Melanie Benjamin

Questons and to RSVP, contact Eileen Cohn at [email protected]. Page 12 FROM OUR SISTERHOOD Sisterhood and Staying Connected

By 10 AM every morning, my phone announces a text and then another and another. Each day starts with four women greeting each other. If someone is late texting, the rest squirm, wondering if all is well. During morning check in, we announce our daily activities, thoughts on the news, and wishes for a great day. Even though we all live with men, this Covid induced “girl friend “routine, along with my Mother’s morning calls, and my inquiries to the kids, represents much of my daily human interaction now. And I’ve come to crave it.

We need human connection and Sisterhood is here to provide that for the women of CBS. We need this connection all the time, but even more so now that we are cut off from face to face socialization. National Women’s League provides daily prayer sessions, classes, and Zoom activities. Check out the WLCJ website at wlcj.org. In addition, your local CBS Sisterhood continues virtually with book club (thanks Eileen Cohn) and Marsha Fish’s Chai Mitzvah class. Our programming team is planning events beginning in August to keep us all in touch. The first one, our opening meeting, will be a fun one- so be on the lookout. Plus, Mah Jongg Madness planning is underway for a February event with some new ideas and creative twists. Sisterhood can use your help with any or all of these activities.

In the meantime, I encourage everyone to mark July 12 on the calendar. You will have the opportunity to Zoom into the International Women’s League Convention from 10:30-5 pm. There will be study sessions with prominent Jewish scholars, music gatherings, and award sessions. In fact, our own CBS will be presented with the Jewels in the Crown Award once again for excellence in programming, social action, and involvement with the National Women’s League.

I am humbled by the women of this award winning Sisterhood and want to thank just a few this month. Kudos flows to Jan Adler and Lisa Sturt who expertly prepare and deliver so many delicious Kiddush brunch boxes each week. Their hard work is a lesson in fast planning and execution! Additionally, appreciation goes to Regina Newman for her representation on the 2020 Convention planning committee and keeping us well informed. Furthermore, big thanks to Carolann Reiter for meeting with me and helping write up the Jewels in the Crown application. Finally, if you need anything from our wonderful gift shop, just contact Sheila Schwartz. She’ll manage to get it to you.

Some days, I walk with my neighbor. During our ( 6 feet apart) mornings on the Greenway, we often comment on the beautiful clear weather, the birds building nests, recipes, jokes and our kids. It is this kind of connection that helps us dur- ing these testy times. I encourage you to stay connected with your Sisterhood sisters. Text, call or Zoom in with one today!

Wishing you all continued health, Cheryl Garfinkel, Marsha Fish and Ellen Levy, Beth Shalom Sisterhood Management Team
