SPECIAL ARTICLE Risks and complications of orthodontic miniscrews Neal D. Kravitza and Budi Kusnotob Chicago, Ill The risks associated with miniscrew placement should be clearly understood by both the clinician and the patient. Complications can arise during miniscrew placement and after orthodontic loading that affect stability and patient safety. A thorough understanding of proper placement technique, bone density and landscape, peri-implant soft- tissue, regional anatomic structures, and patient home care are imperative for optimal patient safety and miniscrew success. The purpose of this article was to review the potential risks and complications of orthodontic miniscrews in regard to insertion, orthodontic loading, peri-implant soft-tissue health, and removal. Distribution of oral ulceration cases in Oral Medicine Integrated Installation of Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital Dewi Zakiawati1*, Nanan Nur'aeny1, Riani Setiadhi1 1*Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia ABSTRACT Introduction: Oral ulceration defines as discontinuity of the oral mucosa caused by the damage of both epithelium and lamina propria. Among other types of lesions, ulceration is the most commonly found lesion in the oral mucosa, especially in the outpatient unit. Oral Medicine Integrated Installation (OMII) Department in Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital serves as the centre of oral health and education services, particularly in handling outpatient oral medicine cases. This research was the first study done in the Department which aimed to observe the distribution of oral ulceration in OMII Department university Dental Hospital. The data is essential in studying the epidemiology of the diseases. Methods: The research was a descriptive study using the patient’s medical data between 2010 and 2012. The data were recorded with Microsoft® Excel, then analysed and presented in the table and diagram using GraphPad Prism® Results: During the study, the distribution of oral ulceration cases found in OMII Department was 664 which comprises of traumatic ulcers, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, angular cheilitis, herpes simplex, herpes labialis, and herpes zoster. Additionally, more than 50% of the total case was recurrent aphthous stomatitis, with a precise number of 364. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the OMII Department in university Dental Hospital had been managing various oral ulceration cases, with the most abundant cases being recurrent aphthous stomatitis. -

The gastrointestinal or GI tract is a long tube that runs from your mouth to your anus – it includes your mouth, oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and bowels. When you have mucositis, the lining of your GI tract becomes thin, making it sore and causing ulcers. This can happen after chemotherapy or radiotherapy. There are two types of mucositis. It’s possible to get both at the same time: – Oral mucositis. This affects your mouth and tongue and can make talking, eating and swallowing difficult. It’s sometimes called stomatitis. – GI mucositis. This affects your digestive system and often causes diarrhoea (frequent, watery poos). 2 Mucositis may be less severe if it’s picked up early, so do tell your healthcare team if you have any of the symptoms described in this fact sheet (see pages 4–5). There are many different health care workers that can be approached for advice and/or treatment for oral ulcers and oral thrush (sometimes referred to as mouth sores by patients), including pharmacists. In fact, the mild and intermittent nature of oral ulcers and oral thrush may most likely lead the patient to present to a pharmacist for immediate treatment. In addition, certain aspects of access are exempt at a pharmacy such as long queues and waiting times, the need to make an appointment and the cost for consultation. Thus pharmacies may serve as a reservoir of undetected cases of oral cancer, HIV and other STIs. Aim: To determine how community pharmacists in the Western Cape manage oral ulcers and oral thrush. Objectives: The data set included the prevalence of oral complaints confronted by pharmacists, how they manage oral ulcers, oral thrush and mouth sores, their knowledge about these conditions, and the influence of socio-economic status (SES) and metropolitan location (metro or non-metro) on recognition and management of the lesions. -
