Stephen O Duke∗ Abstract Herbicides with new modes of action are badly needed to manage the evolution of resistance of weeds to existing herbicides. Yet no major new mode of action has been introduced to the market place for about 20 years. There are probably several reasons for this. New potential products may have remained dormant owing to concerns that glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops have reduced the market for a new herbicide. The capture of a large fraction of the herbicide market by glyphosate with GR crops led to significantly diminished herbicide discovery efforts. Some of the reduced herbicide discovery research was also due to company consolidations and the availability of more generic herbicides. Another problem might be that the best herbicide molecular target sites may have already been discovered. However, target sites that are not utilized, for which there are inhibitors that are highly effective at killing plants, suggests that this is not true. Results of modern methods of target site discovery (e.g. gene knockout methods) are mostly not public, but there is no evidence of good herbicides with new target sites coming from these approaches. In summary, there are several reasons for a long dry period for new herbicide target sites; however, the relative magnitude of each is unclear. The economic stimulus to the herbicide industry caused by the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds, especially GR weeds, may result in one or more new modes of action becoming available in the not too distant future.

  • Weed Resistance
    WEED RESISTANCE Weed resistance is defined by the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) as the inherited ability of a plant to survive and reproduce after exposure to a dose of herbicide normally lethal to the wild type. In a plant, resistance may be naturally occurring or induced by such techniques as genetic engineering or selection of variants produced by tissue culture or mutagenesis (WSSA). Repeated applications of the same herbicide or a different herbicide with a similar mode of action on the same field in consecutive years has contributed to the widespread occurrence of resistance to herbicides in several weed species around the world, in the U.S. and in Louisiana (see list below). Weed management programs must not solely depend on herbicides to be economically sustainable in the long term. A combination of the following management strategies is recommended: 1. Use residual herbicides. 2. Rotate different crops. 3. Rotate herbicides with different modes of action. 4. Tank-mix herbicides with different modes of action at full recommended rates. 5. Avoid sequential applications of the same herbicide. 6. Utilize tillage, cultivation or other cultural practices whenever and wherever feasible. 7. Clean equipment thoroughly before and after each use. 8. Control weeds on fallow ground or set aside to prevent spreading of documented or suspected resistant weeds. If you suspect resistance after a herbicide application, attempt to eradicate the escapes using mechanical methods (e.g., hand-removal, tillage). DO NOT ALLOW WEEDS TO PRODUCE SEED. If seeds are produced, collect a seed sample from suspect plants and take to your parish LSU AgCenter extension agent who will have them screened by an LSU AgCenter scientist and inform you if the population is resistant.

    ABSTRACT ISRAEL, TREVOR DAVIS. Aminocyclopyrachlor Efficacy and Behavior in Selected Aquatic Plants. (Under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Richardson). Aminocyclopyrachlor is a recently discovered synthetic auxin herbicide and has potential utility in aquatic sites. Greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate aminocyclopyrachlor- methyl ester (AMCP-me) and aminocyclopyrachlor acid (AMCP-a) efficacy on selected aquatic plants. AMCP-me at 140 g ai/ha controlled mosquitofern (Azolla caroliniana Willd.) 84% and reduced dry weights to 24% of nontreated controls at 4 weeks after treatment (WAT). Control of water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] at 4 WAT was 94% with 280 g/ha AMCP-a. At 5 WAT, 280 g/ha AMCP-a controlled alligatorweed [Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.] 88% and reduced root weights to 28% of nontreated plants. Creeping water primrose [Ludwigia grandiflora (Michx.) Greuter & Burdet] and parrotfeather [Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verdc.] control at 5 WAT with 35 g/ha AMCP-a was 85 and 95%, respectively. Parrotfeather and creeping water primrose root weights were less than 20% of nontreated controls at all rates tested. At 5 WAT, soft rush (Juncus effusus L.) injury was 5% or less at all rates tested, while pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata L.) injury with 35 g/ha AMCP-a was 83% and increased with rate. Lizard tail (Saururus cernuus L.) injury 5 WAT was 33 and 87% at 35 and 560 g/ha AMCP- a, respectively. AMCP-a was evaluated on alligatorweed planted at different water depths. Alligatorweed control at 4 WAT was 75% at 22 cm water depth. As depth increased, percent reduction in height decreased, but percent reduction in shoot weight increased.
