The CWGC records the surname correctly as Thackwray although the name inscribed (incorrectly) on the memorial in Neston Parish Church, and elsewhere, is shown as Thackery [see image, above]. On the Graves Registration Report Form the surname appears to have been spelt ‘Thackerwray’, this being crossed through and the name ‘Thackwray’ handwritten above [see extract]. 54 THE SITES OF ANCIENT VILLAGES IN WIRRAL. By Eric H. Ridcout, B.Sc. Read March 2bth, 1925. ISTORY has sometimes been defined as the written H record of the life of Man upon the earth. Chroniclers who consciously took notes for posterity share honours as historians with diarists and letter-writers whose spontan eous and naif remarks were never meant to be public property, and all these are often less valuable indications of the life of Man in any given period than that expression of emotion and ideals which is called literature. Legend has become ancillary to history, and the shadowy truth concerning ages that lie back on the borderlines of prehistoric days has received illumination even from stones, pieces of metal, carved wood, and pictured papyrus. Until recent years this study of written records was concerned chiefly with the lives of the great and powerful men of any epoch, and it is only with the rise of modern democracy that there has come a desire that history should tell the story of ordinary men and describe their customary thoughts and deeds. As this demand for knowledge of the life of essentially unlettered men increases, a stimulus is given to the study of the evidence that was never written down, and the earth itself begins to be perused as a docu ment that will help to reconstruct for us the picture of past ages. There can be few problems so fascinating as the attempt to discover what led a group of people in some far distant time to choose out of a whole area one special site for their abode.

They remained in the meeting, but took no part in the vote. 13.67 OPEN FORUM No issues raised. 13.68 MINUTES AND MATTERS ARISING It was RESOLVED that the Minutes of the meeting of the Parish Council held on 23 July 2013 be confirmed as a correct record. 13.69 PLANNING AND LICENSING (1) Planning Applications Received: 13/03568/FUL Proposed new access road from the A5117 to the British Pipeline agency at Little Stanney Pump Station, Stanney Mill Lane, Chester, Cheshire. No objections by the Parish Council. Some concern expressed about the tightness of the turn from the A5117 into the site which would presumably be addressed by Cheshire West and Chester Council. 13/03487/FUL Single storey side and rear extension (demolition of existing) at Winsmere, Strawberry Way East, Chester CH1 6PG. No objections by the Parish Council. However it was noted that work had already begun prior to the application being approved.
