A great amount of research has been dedicated to the ambiguous title ascribed to the mass and what it may have represented during the latter part of the fifteenth century. One area that has not been covered in such detail is that the mass itself is exemplary through the use of the Hypophrygian mode, a mode that had been hardly used in polyphony throughout the fifteenth century. This study, then, critically examines the secular output of contemporary foremost composers Guillaume Dufay, Gilles Binchois, Antoine Busnois, Johannes Ockeghem, and Johannes Tinctoris in order to establish a stylistic paradigm of the Phrygian modes.

Moll East Carolina University [email protected] Abstract College-level courses devoted to Renaissance culture typically put a premium on incorporating primary sources and artifacts of a literary, art-historical, and historical nature. Yet the monuments of contemporaneous music continue to be marginalized as instructional resources, even though they are fully as worthy both from an aesthet- ic and from a historical standpoint. This study attempts to address that problem by invoking the tradition of early polyphonic masses on L’homme armé – a secular tune used as a unifying melody (cantus firmus) throughout settings of the five-movement liturgical cycle. Beginning by explaining the origins and significance of the putative monophonic tune, the paper then details how a series of composers utilized the song in interestingly varied ways in various mass settings. Subsequently it sketches out a context for mysticism in the liturgical-musical tradition of L’homme armé, and points to some compelling parallels with the contemporaneous art of panel painting, specifically as represented in the works of Rogier van der Weyden.     PETER WOETMANN CHRISTOFFERSEN The restoration of Antoine Busnoys’ four-part Flemish song “In mijnen sijn” An experiment in sound, imitation technique, and the setting of a popular tune Important aspects of my discussion of Busnoys’ “In mijnen sijn” are most adequately represented by the musical editions appended to this article. They include separate edi- tions of the song’s only two complete sources, which date from the fi rst decade of the 16th century. For anybody who wants to perform the song, these sources raise some thorny questions about how to understand the music. The editions include my attempt to answer these questions by means of a restoration of “In mijnen sijn”.1 The process of restoration highlights some issues of importance to our perception of the development of compositional practice in the second part of the fi fteenth century. These issues con- cern the extent and meaning of the roles of key signatures, strict canon techniques and the development of polyphonic settings of popular songs. Furthermore, in my opinion this Flemish song has not received the attention it deserves from musicology.2 Sources and composer attribution The song’s presumably oldest source is Petrucci’s third printed collection of secular music, Canti C, which was published in Venice in 1504 (hereafter Canti C).3 It ap- pears on ff. 55v-56 without any composer attribution and with only the fi rst line of a French poem “Le second jour d’avril” as a text incipit below each voice part.     Piffaro’s Beginning Ah, Beginnings…they can be exciting, stimulating and even a little scary at times. They may mark a break with the preexistent in an attempt to chart some new course, or revive an older, lost tradition. So it was with a fledgling group of reed players from the Collegium Musicum at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980, when they decided to launch their own ensemble, calling it simply and graphically, the Renaissance Wind Band. Their intent was to pursue renaissance wind playing, especially the double-reed instruments, the shawms, dulcians, krumhorns and bagpipes, in a way that was lacking in the nascent early music revival in this country at the time, at least on a professional level. It was a courageous and daring leap into the unknown in many ways. And it was Piffaro’s beginning! On a somewhat ragtag collection of instruments, the best available at the time, the group formed a 5-part band and began collecting repertoire, teaching themselves the challenging techniques demanded by the horns, learned how to make successful reeds and figured out who played what, when and how. It was exciting and groundbreaking, something new and uncharted. As with many a nascent experiment in group formation, personnel changed over the first 4 years of ensemble building, but eventually settled into a coterie of like- minded individuals committed to creating an entity with roots that might support the growth of a vibrant and lasting ensemble. What’s a musical ensemble to do but perform, so by the winter of 1984 the group decided it was time to go public, to make the leap into that great unknown of audience response.
