2 NCCT Presents its 43rd Annual Summer Production Director’s Note

Thoughts on A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Wikipedia tells us that, “inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright (251–183 BC), the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of, farce including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from the line that vaudeville comedians often used to begin a story: ‘A funny thing happened on the way to the theater.’”

Having directed several plays from the ancient Greeks and Romans, I have a deep appreciation for their humor and the relevance of their comments on their society to our own. Pseudolus’ yearning for freedom, Hero’s great love for someone he really doesn’t know, father-son competition, how long-term marriages can sometimes leave us lonely, bullying, and so many more topics are as fresh now as they were circa 200 BC. (even the role of money in politics...watch for it!). We still laugh at mistaken identity, “relationship” innuendo, puns, and classic chase scenes. How wonderful to be able to have this shared human identity with the ancients—“echoing behind us” and on into the future.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum 21 22 NCCT Presents its 43rd Annual Summer Production Cast & Staff Biographies

Jason Archambeault: Jason is in his 6th performance with NCCT and is very happy to be part of such a funny, talented cast! This would not be possible without the love and support of his wife and family, which he appreciates more than words can express. He has been in past performances with his daughter Mason (42nd Street, Oliver!) and his son Ethan (Oliver!). Someday, he hopes to be in a show with his wife, Dawn, and stepson, Cayden.

Corey Armstrong: Corey grew up in the Upper Valley and has enjoyed performing with a variety of local theater groups. Most recently he appeared in Artistree’s Fiddler on the Roof as the Rabbi, Barn Arts’ The 39 Steps and Little Shop of Horrors, NCCT’s Jesus Christ Superstar, and has performed for three consecutive years in the Parrish Players’ Annual Hunger Benefit Cabaret at the Thetford Grange. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum marks Corey’s first turn on the LOH stage since his Wet Paint Player Days with the Lebanon HS Drama Club, more than twenty years ago. Come see him in Woodstock this October in Pentangle Arts’ production of Rocky Horror!

Elise Ballard: Elise is a freshman at the University of Maine, where she attends for the performing arts. Her previous theatrical experience includes roles such as Marty in Grease, Iris in Fame, and Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street. She would like to thank highly caffeinated tea for making her performance truly come to life. This is Elise’s fifth NCCT show.

John Crossley: Forum is John’s fifth NCCT summer production, third with his wife Sandra! John “grew up in Chandler Music Hall” and has flowed downstream to the Upper Valley since pretending to be grown-up. John thanks his mother for teaching him--and many others--to dance and a love for musicals. Life should be a comedy; if it isn’t, look at it funny!

Sandra Williams-Crossley: This is Sandra’s third NCCT production. Other performances include Sweeney Todd (2012) and The Sound of Music (2013). Thank you to my fellow Proteans for all their good mugging. Love to John C. for filling my life with laughter. You are my ideal.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum 31 Thank You to All Our Donors Members! Earlier this year, the NCCT membership voted to update our by-laws to be more inclusive of all our generous donors. Now, anyone who gives a gift of $25 or more (or multiple donations totaling $25 or more) will be a member of NCCT with voting rights and privileges. This is different from the past when someone had to specifically purchase a “membership” to be a member. People who gave donations, for example to our Annual Fund, were unfortunately not considered members. This change allows our supporters access to NCCT as well as brings us more in line with what it means to be a 501(c)3 organization.

Below is a list of everyone* who gave to any of our fundraising activities over the past year or who specifically purchased what we previously called a “Membership”**. Thank you all so much for being a part of NCCT.
