On The Journey Care & Share +A story is told of a church that was destroyed during the 1995 Rwandan genocide. This Weekend As the sought to rebuild itself, it began by rebuilding the church, which once benefitting the families stood at the heart of the community. Unable to provide electricity, however, and with a residual fear of further violence, the scattered community would wait until in crisis who are serviced dark to gather for Sunday Mass. Each week, with the ringing of a bell, a little miracle by the would happen. Catholic Community As the people made their way to the shell of the church, they brought with them Response Team their lamps, using them to light the way and to light their parish church. When finished, they would return home the same way, taking with them their lamps. For Thank you for supporting CCRT’s anyone observing this, it was impossible not to see the connection between this miraculous event and today’s Gospel. For this broken and grieving community, it was mission to help serve the poor! a sign of God’s continuing presence in the life of their community, a sign that life was returning to normal – that God’s light was with them and in them. The only time that little church was lit up was when people were present. That was when they became truly Church! So it is for all believers as we gather on the Lord’s Day. We gather in the light of Christ, and we are challenged to be that same light in the world – to be Christ in the world and in the lives of other people. The image of light is a powerful one. We all know how important it is to life itself. When we have light we are more secure, and we can see the way even if it might be uneven, winding and/or bumpy. Light is necessary; it brightens our vision of life and invites others to share in our vision. BUILDING COMMITTEE So the words of Jesus, You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain PRESENTATION cannot be hidden, are both challenging and consoling. Being a Christian is like that! Our lives should shine with Christ’s presence, compassion, care and love. We must show this in practical ways, as Isaiah tells us in the first reading: sharing THE BUILDING COMMITTEE INVITES our bread, sheltering the oppressed and homeless, clothing the naked and fighting YOU TO ATTEND ONE OF OUR against oppression, lies, and false accusation. Isaiah sets before us a vision – sort of a UPCOMING MEETINGS road map for life - according to the will of God. TO LEARN WHAT IS PLANNED FOR The images of light and salt are interesting and provoking ones. Neither exists for ST ANDREW’S GATHERING SPACE its own sake. Light is no good if there is no one to use it or to bask in its glow. As the Gospel tells us, you do not light a lamp and then hide it. Light is meant to penetrate Thursday, February 9 and overcome darkness. It does not make sense to hide it. Likewise, salt is no good 7:00 PM unless it brings flavor to food. On The Journey (continued from page 1) So our faith is no good if it is all just about us. As we deepen our relationship with God through prayer and the Eucharist, we will be strengthened to go out and share our faith with others. Only then will we be fulfilling the Gospel mandate to be Christ’s disciples – bringing glory and praise to God! May the light we carry within us help others - and ourselves – come to a deeper relationship with Jesus!

+By the time you read this article at Saturday’s liturgy, we will have had two of the three “town hall” meetings to publicly present our plan for the gathering space we had planned on as part of our Changing Lives Together appeal. There have been no significant negative issues raised; people are beginning to see the need and uses. For our plan – many of you saw it in its “rough” form at the picnic last September – we will also be adding some meeting room spaces, and more lavatories at both the east and west sides of the church building. The west side (bell tower side) will be the main addition, but it will not impede too much on the grassy mall area; bell tower stays put! Stay tuned for more to come. The last town hall meeting is this coming Thursday evening, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. IN THE CHURCH.

+My thanks to the Knights of Columbus for sponsoring the Desert Meal for the seminarians in first Theology at Sacred Heart to travel to the Holy Land this spring. The monies are used to help subsidize their costs for making the four-week trip. The parish will also be sending them a check for $500 in support of their efforts.

+Well, if things go well, I hope to be on vacation from this Friday, February 10, and returning on February 22. (It’s important to check on those palms for the Palm Sunday celebration, ya’ know!) I leave you all in the faithful, trusty hands of a wonderful staff, so I worry not about the care they will continue to extend to you. Please pray that we have a safe trip to Florida and back. I will try to bring back some warmer temperatures! God bless, see you soon in church! Msgr. Mike (with thoughts from FAITH Catholic Publishing)

St. Josephine Bakita was born in 1869, in Sudan. She was kidnapped at the age of 7, while working in the fields with her family and subsequently sold into . Her captors asked for her name but she was too terrified to remember so they named her “Bakhita,” which means “fortunate” in Arabic. She was tortured by her various owners who branded her, beat and cut her. She bore her suffer- ing valiantly though she did not know Christ or the redemptive nature of suffering. She also had a certain awe for the world and its creator. After being sold a total of five times, Bakhita was purchased by Callisto Legnani, the Italian consul in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Two years later, he took Bakhita to Italy to work as a nanny for his colleague, Augusto Michieli. He, in turn, sent Bakhita to accompany his daughter to a school in Venice run by the Canossian Sisters. Bakhita felt called to learn more about the Church, and was baptized with the name “Josephine Margaret.” Jose- phine decided to enter in 1893. She made her profession in 1896 and was sent to Northern Italy, where she dedicated her life to assisting her community and teaching others to love God. St. Josephine was beatified in 1992 and canonized shortly after on October 1, 2000 by Pope John Paul II. She is the first person to be canonized from Sudan and is a witness to evangelical recomciliation and a model of freedom. The Church observes her memorial on February 8th.

8 Jesus and Me

Looking for a Lenten Opportunity to Replenish Your Spirit?

The best way to live as followers of Jesus is to live awake. Pope Francis has asked us to wake up the world. To awaken the world we must awaken ourselves. We cannot be people for others, disciples of Jesus, without replenishing our own spirits.

Sr. Macrina Wiederker, OSB, well known for her creative writing and retreat ministry, will be in our area – just for you. Sr. Macrina is the author of eight popular books on prayer and spirituality and a regular contributor to the Catholic devotional, Living Faith. Although her academic background is in elementary and religious education with continued studies in spirituality she claims that her best learning flows from the wisdom school of daily life.

You are invited to be with her on March 9, 2017 (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) for:

The Spirituality of Daily Life: Energizing our Lives through Practices that Enhance and Support our Desire for Transformation

This Lenten Gathering is an invitation to honor your soul’s need for reflection. Learn to pause for the medicine of deep listening. Sister Macrina will explore with us ways of being attentive and living vibrantly in the midst of the beauty and the struggles of daily life.

Where: St. John Fisher Chapel University Parish 3665 E Walton Blvd. Auburn Hills, MI 48326

You are not an accident. God created you for a purpose with a special mission in mind. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first command- ment,” Matthew 22:37-38. What does loving the Lord mean? The Catholic Church interchanges “love” and “charity.” So what does doing charity for God mean? It means taking part in the Catholic Church…what does that entail you ask? It means feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, visiting those in prison, caring for those society has tossed in the gutter, and showing mercy to those who don’t deserve it. Don’t believe me that the Church is so giving? Thousands of people have helped this mission with such passion that they have been canonized . These were not wildly successful people. One of these Saints, Reflective Verse of the Week , once said that “there are no great things to Matthew 5:14-16 accomplish in this world, only small things done with “You are the light of the world.
