Anyone interested in helping with the festival should plan to meet with Sarah immediately after the 10 February meeting. Tracy Jarvis announced the kick-off of the turf project at the high school football field. Over $50K was raised at the recent event. You can join the project at the $5K Buc Club, with a pledge of $5,000 payable over a number of years. Lisa Caldwell announced a 30% discount for members for Valentine’s Day gifts at Nonnie Wallers Parlor at Cross Pointe Center. Joe Mullins gave his vocational talk. Joe was born in Middletown Ohio to parents who came from Eastern Kentucky. Joe’s dad was a fiddle player and a broadcaster and set the stage for Joe’s career as he followed his dad into the radio and music business. He started playing the banjo in 1982 and has been at it for over thirty 30 years. He worked at the Middletown radio station and that’s where he met his spouse, Tammy. They have a son, Daniel, and daughter, Sara. Both are students at Cedarville University. Sara has been on the Dean’s list studying nursing. She and Daniel are both scheduled to graduate this May from the university. Joe has been in Xenia for the past 20 years having purchased WBZI and later WKFI and WEDI. He operates 3 AM stations, 1 FM station and broadcasts from www.myclassiccountry.com . Joe formed “Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers” 9 years ago and since then has traveled to 25 states and spent many a night on the road. This Valentine’s Day, the group will make their 9th appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Joe has been a Rotarian for 17 years, having served as president and looks forward to the Tuesday meetings. Sarge Jeff Orders and Fines for the Day Sarge Jeff started with a $2 fine for Lisa. He also queried the Scooter Table to determine if the scooters had paid their appropriate fine and if they had apologized to the speaker for ducking out early. Only Cate Hill owed up to her responsibilities and in the spirit of being a good Rotarian, attempted to cover for Sarah since she remains hobbled by her foot problems. The Sarge then spent the next 10 minutes questioning the knowledge of the youngest member of the club at each table with regards to Rotary business. As only Sarge Jeff knows how, several dollars were raised for the club’s coffers, and each member was provided a great deal of valued and useful data about Rotary. Happy Bucks Bob Geyer was happy the weatherman was wrong about a predicted snowstorm. Ed Mignery was very happy that Pete Carroll did not run the ball (“go Pats”, says Ed). And Noel was glad that Sarge Jeff would soon be finished emptying the pockets of the members. Tim Spradlin, Finally Home Farm Today’s program was introduced by Ron Lewis. Today’s speaker, Tim Spradlin, gave a presentation on Military Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. As the director of Finally Home Farm LLC , Tim provided information about the therapy offered to mentally wounded veterans through the use of horses. This is a type of treatment which benefits Post Traumatic Stress victims. Horses, as a prey animal, are very sensitive at reading non-verbal communication and respond in ways that can make a difference to veterans in therapy sessions monitored by mental health professionals. Finally Home Farm, LLC assists the program by making the horses available to the vets and their therapists. The organization is awaiting their final determination from the IRS as a non-profit charitable organization. They work closely with South Community Mental Health and the Dayton VA Medical Center. Tim and his spouse Susan have undergone certification by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association. The program has focused on helping vets avoid suicide, and offering an alternate therapy to other traditional mental health programs. The farm can serve 5 patients per week at the Greene County Career Center’s Agricultural Research Center. Donations to the organization are used for program insurance, equipment, maintenance, training and certifications. None of the staff receive salaries, they all work as volunteers. Thought For The Day Men are equal; it is not birth but virtue that makes the difference.
