The Shuckers (13-11 second half, 54-40 overall) took the lead against right-hander Merandy Gonzalez (1-4) with Erceg’s one-out solo home run – his third of the series. Shortstop Luis Aviles singled to center field, went to second base on right fielder Trent Grisham’s walk, advanced to third base on catcher Max McDowell’s flyout, and scored on a double steal. Jacksonville (10- 15, 38-55) scored once in the third inning against Biloxi right-hander Trey Supak (1-6). Left fielder Brian Miller reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Erceg’s error on center fielder Monte Harrison’s ground ball. The teams traded fifth-inning runs, as center fielder Corey Ray hit a one-out single, stole second base and scored on second baseman Keston Hiura’s RBI double. Jumbo Shrimp catcher Rodrigo Vigil hit a leadoff single, went to second base on Gonzalez’s sacrifice and reached third base on Miller’s single. When Miller stole second base, Vigil scored on McDowell’s errant throw. Supak allowed two unearned runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings. Erceg led off the sixth inning with a single and went to third base on Grisham’s single and right fielder Braxton Lee’s error. Gonzalez’s wild pitch scored Erceg, and McDowell’s sacrifice fly scored Grisham. Gonzalez left with a 5-2 deficit, allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks with a season-high nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Biloxi scored three seventh- inning runs off left-hander Miguel Del Pozo. Ray doubled, Hiura walked, first baseman Jake Gatewood hit an RBI single, Erceg singled with an error by Lee, and Aviles hit an RBI double. Biloxi right-hander Jon Perrin went the final four innings for a save, allowing a ninth-inning run when Lee doubled and scored on two groundouts. Diaz hit safely in all six games he played last week, hitting .455 (10-for-22) with four home runs, 12 runs batted in, seven runs scored, two doubles, and three walks. Over the past week Diaz led the Southern League with a 1.091 slugging percentage, as well as a 1.611 on-base plus slugging percentage. His 12 RBI and four home runs were tied for the league lead as well for the last week. Diaz homered in three consecutive games from July 12-14, and three of his six games with a hit were multi-hit contests. Diaz becomes the first Southern League player to win multiple Southern League Player of the Week honors in the 2018 season, as the league recognized him for his play from June 4-10 when he hit .565 and led Minor League Baseball with a .667 OBP. He is regarded by MLB.com as the Miami Marlins No. 7 prospect, and he was acquired by the Marlins as part of January’s Yelich trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoosville Time: Rivalry, resumed. Tonight starts the third of four series this season between the Jumbo Shrimp and Blue Wahoos, and this is Jacksonville’s first trip to Pensacola in 2018. In the first half, the Jumbo Shrimp went 6-2 and won both series against the Wahoos in April and late May, early June. The last series featured two games cancelled due to rain on June 2. The Jumbo Shrimp will make a return trip to Pensacola from August 14-18. Last year the Jumbo Shrimp went 7-13 against the Wahoos, including a 2-8 mark at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Pensacola also swept Jacksonville in this park in the 2018 South Division Championship Series. Shrimp Homering to the Top: Jumbo Shrimp sluggers Monte Harrison and Peter O’Brien are tied for the Marlins organizational lead with 12 home runs in the 2018 season. The Jacksonville pair are even with High-A Jupiter’s John Silviano who also has 12 home runs to lead the organization. Isan Diaz is now tied for fourth in the organization with Triple-A New Orleans’ Jonathan Rodriguez, also with 10 home runs. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have nine players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), Isan Diaz (7), RHP Nick Neidert (8), OF Brian Miller (10), Merandy Gonzalez (13), Joe Dunand (16), Jordan Yamamoto (19) Robert Dugger (22) and John Norwood (30).
