State Track & Field Champions State Track & Field Champions – Cincinnati Boys Purpose The purpose of this document is to provide to those interested a historical record of the individual and relay event winners from the Ohio High School Athletic Association state track and field championships. To provide such provides both substance and context of the participation of those individuals who have reached the pinnacle of the sport at the high school level within the state of Ohio high school athletics. It is to them, their parents and relatives, their respective coaches, and to the general public at large that this document is dedicated. History While the OHSAA championships have been held since 1908, it is believed that participation by Cincinnati-area schools did not come about till approximately 1923. The reason as to the non-participation in the state tournament is unknown to date. What is known is that a regular end-of-season meet was held amongst Cincinnati-area schools for some time before the Cincinnati schools started appearing at the state meet. Frequently, those meets were held at Carson Field, now known as UC’s Nippert Stadium. The participation in that meet may have led to a delay by school administrators in entering the state tournament? Regarding the state tournament, a number of events held in the early years of the championships, and some in later years, are no longer held under the current meet format. The list of those particular events and of Cincinnati-area winners has been preserved within the document. Now defunct events are shown in italics. Resources These lists and the information contained herein were compiled from both OHSAA state track and field programs and from newspaper accounts (Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Post). All of the information contained can be confirmed through historical research. Conversion Equivalents 12 inches = 1 foot = 0.3048 meters (exact definition) 100 meters = 109 yards, 13 inches 110 meters = 120 yards, 10 ¾ inches 1600 meters = 0.99419 miles = 1749 yards, 28.12 inches General Notes School names have been reproduced as they were recognized as they appeared official state programs during the year of performance. The championships converted from yards to meters in 1980 with the conversion of OSU’s conversion to an internationally-formatted track facility.
