Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction he basic issue of this study, as it should be for all historical research and analysis, is how do we confront the past? And since war espe- Tcially invites the construction of a mythic past, the writing of history becomes an attempt to correct our collective memory. In the case of the Great War of 1914–1918, remembrance has often taken the form of heritage and celebration rather than more profound learning and understanding. But we do not want to rehash the platitudes of “conventional wisdom.” Among the many aspects of a conflict that engulfed much of the world, for the United States, it involved coming to terms with the great diversity within the popu- lation as its military forces went off to fight on foreign battlefields. It sent men into combat against the military forces of the lands their families had only recently left but that had become enemy nations. It asked other men to become allies of friendlier states from which they had departed, sometimes with uncertain plans about whether they ever intended to return. How this affected the mobilization of troops for the combat that lay ahead remains to be fully told. But it left a legacy that persisted in national policy and popular culture, even after the war had ended. In the years after the Great War, performers on the theatrical stages of America would celebrate the victory of the United States and the Allies over the Central Powers. Origins of the Sicilian Mafia: the Market for Lemons
_____________________________________________________________________ CREDIT Research Paper No. 12/01 _____________________________________________________________________ Origins of the Sicilian Mafia: The Market for Lemons by Arcangelo Dimico, Alessia Isopi, Ola Olsson Abstract Since its first appearance in the late 1800s, the origins of the Sicilian mafia have remained a largely unresolved mystery. Both institutional and historical explanations have been proposed in the literature through the years. In this paper, we develop an argument for a market structure-hypothesis, contending that mafia arose in towns where firms made unusually high profits due to imperfect competition. We identify the market for citrus fruits as a sector with very high international demand as well as substantial fixed costs that acted as a barrier to entry in many places and secured high profits in others. We argue that the mafia arose out of the need to protect citrus production from predation by thieves. Using the original data from a parliamentary inquiry in 1881-86 on all towns in Sicily, we show that mafia presence is strongly related to the production of orange and lemon. This result contrasts recent work that emphasizes the importance of land reforms and a broadening of property rights as the main reason for the emergence of mafia protection. FRUNZA, BOGDANA SIMINA., M.S. Streetscape and Ethnicity: New York’s Mulberry Street and the Redefinition of the Italian American Ethnic Identity. (2008) Directed by Prof. Jo R. Leimenstoll. 161 pp. The current research looked at ways in which the built environment of an ethnic enclave contributes to the definition and redefinition of the ethnic identity of its inhabitants. Assuming a dynamic component of the built environment, the study advanced the idea of the streetscape as an active agent of change in the definition and redefinition of ethnic identity. Throughout a century of existence, Little Italy – New York’s most prominent Italian enclave – changed its demographics, appearance and significance; these changes resonated with changes in the ethnic identity of its inhabitants. From its beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century until the present, Little Italy’s Mulberry Street has maintained its privileged status as the core of the enclave, but changed its symbolic role radically. Over three generations of Italian immigrants, Mulberry Street changed its role from a space of trade to a space of leisure, from a place of providing to a place of consuming, and from a social arena to a tourist tract. The photographic analysis employed in this study revealed that changes in the streetscape of Mulberry Street connected with changes in the ethnic identity of its inhabitants, from regional Southern Italian to Italian American. Significance: In the nineteenth century, Friends of the middle and upper socio-economic classes left the Center City Philadelphia area and moved out toward the city's suburbs. While the wealthier Friends chose places along the mainline, such as Germantown or Haverford, the middling sorts stopped in West Philadelphia. The first meeting house on the site was erected in 1851; the present meeting house-school complex was built in 1901 for the use of the Hicksite Friends. Description: The meeting house is a two-story entity made of bricks laid up in Flemish bond; some glazed headers are noticeable throughout the coursing. It has a watertable fashioned out of limestone and rests on a rough-cut stone foundation. There are jack arches over the windows and entryway. Typical windows are glazed with six-over-six lights placed in double-hung sash. Connected to the meeting house by way of a two-story high and three-bay wide hyphen is the school building, also constructed of brick masonry. Inside, the meeting room included the traditional features of a Quaker meeting space, like the gallery and facing benches. Historical Notes: Adhering to the Hicksite interpretation of the Quaker doctrine, the West Philadelphia Friends looked to the Yearly Meeting at Race Street for guidance. -

ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH AND CULTURAL HISTORY HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONSULTING HISTORIC CONTEXT STATEMENT FOR LOWER NORTHEAST PLANNING DISTRICT 2012 HISTORIC CONTEXT STATEMENT FOR LOWER NORTHEAST PLANNING DISTRICT EMILY T. COOPERMAN, PH.D. Geographical Summary The Lower Northeast Planning District (figure 1) lies inland (northwest) of the Delaware River waterfront at the point where the northeast and northwest sections of the city branch off from north Philadelphia. The Lower Northeast Planning District is characterized by relatively flat topography that rises gradually from the southeast to the northwest, moving away from the river. The Planning District is bounded on the southwest by the Frankford and Tacony creeks, and abuts Montgomery County on the northwest just south of the Tacony Creek as it turns to the northeast. The Tacony Creek becomes the Frankford Creek at the point where it historically met the Wingohocking Creek, which flowed east from Germantown and is now culverted, near the intersection of Tabor Road and Garland Street. Historically, the Little Tacony Creek flowed in several branches through the heart of the Planning District, meeting the Frankford Creek below where Erie Avenue is now located. Figure 1.
