Introduction 1.1 Landscape designations play an important role in Scottish Planning Policy by protecting and enhancing areas of particular value. Scottish Planning Policy encourages local, non-statutory designations to protect and create an understanding of the role of locally important landscape have on communities. 1.2 In 2014, as part of the preparation of the North Lanarkshire Local Development Proposed Plan, a review of local landscape designations was undertaken by URS as part of wider action for landscape protection and management. 2. URS Review of North Lanarkshire Local Landscape Character (2015) 2.1 The purpose of the Review was to identify and provide an awareness of the special character and qualities of the designated landscape in North Lanarkshire and to contribute to guiding appropriate future development to the most appropriate locations. The Review has identified a number of Local Landscape Units (LLU) that are of notable quality and value within which future development requires careful consideration to avoid potential significant impact on their landscape character. 2.2 There are two exemplar LLUs identified in this study, Kilsyth Hills and Clyde Valley, which are seen as very sensitive to development. Both of these areas warrant specific recognition and protection, as their high landscape quality would be threatened and adversely affected by unsympathetic development within their boundaries. -

It is essential that we avoid and reduce the risk of flooding, and prepare and protect ourselves and our communities. This is first local flood risk management plan for the Clyde and Loch Lomond Local Plan District, describing the actions which will make a real difference to managing the risk of flooding and recovering from any future flood events. The task now for us – local authorities, Scottish Water, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), the Scottish Government and all other responsible authorities and public bodies – is to turn our plan into action. These are the aims for managing local flood risk. The objectives have been grouped in three main ways: by reducing risk, avoiding increasing risk or accepting risk by maintaining current levels of management. Objectives Many organisations, such as Scottish Water and energy companies, actively maintain and manage their own assets including their risk from flooding. Where known, these actions are described here. Scottish Natural Heritage and Historic Environment Scotland work with site owners to manage flooding where appropriate at designated environmental and/or cultural heritage sites. As such it is difficult to offer a meaningful snapshot of how the park looked at the date of registration without reference to contemporary documents which vary both in availability and comprehensiveness. An additional complication is the changes in CCS policy, which initially required the park to be substantially complete before registration, but later made a concession to allow partly-ready parks to register before they actually opened, a concession which was later withdrawn as meaningless. -

The report highlights environmental considerations, predominantly with respect to ground conditions, and has been prepared in response to resident concerns over site history and on-site risks. For example, our judging panel were highly impressed with the extensive communityled development of communal gardens and growing spaces in Dundee (Every1’s Garden, p12), Edinburgh (North Edinburgh Grows, p10) and Lewis (Horshader Community Growing, p6). All three categorywinning projects engage local people in SURF addressing a myriad of local issues. The shared focus is on providing healthy fresh food, work & volunteering opportunities, and Awards welcoming shared spaces for all community members and groups to use and enjoy. This year’s winners also demonstrate the value of maximising regeneration opportunities from assets such as small businesses 2014 (see WorkingRite Pioneers, p4) and atrisk historic buildings (see Glengate Hall, p8). -

This period saw massive volcanic eruptions, tropical forests and warm tropical seas. In the more recent Ice Ages we were buried beneath a one km thick ice sheet. This eventful geology produced a variety of rocks and scenery that have been the building blocks of our communities and industry.
