Richmond and Ann Coe Christiansen 1993 NOTE: This map is the product of collaboration of the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology and the U.S. Geological Survey, and is designed for both scientific and practical purposes. It was prepared in two stages. First, the map and map explanations were prepared by the State compiler. Second, information on the map was integrated with that of adjacent maps, locally supplemented, and related to a uniform map symbol classification by the editors. Map unit descriptions were edited, supplemented, and coordinated with those of other maps of this series so that individual unit descriptions are applicable throughout both this map and all other maps of the series. Problems of mapping or interpretation in different areas were resolved by correspondence to the extent possible; most simply reflect differences in available information or differences in philosophies of mapping and serve to encourage further investigation. Less than forty percent of the surficial deposits of the United States have been mapped and described. Traditionally, mapping of surficial deposits has focused on glacial, alluvial, eolian, lacustrine, marine, and landslide deposits. Slope and upland deposits have been mapped in detail only in restricted areas. However, an enormous amount of engineering construction and many important problems of land use and land management are associated with regions that have extensive slope and upland deposits (colluvium and residuum, for example). -

Roads to Destruction: Postwar Urban Redevelopment and North Dallas Freedman’s Town by Cynthia Lewis Like most American cities following World War II, Dallas entered a period of economic prosperity, and city leaders, like their counterparts throughout the nation, sought to maximize that prosperity through various urban renewal initiatives.1 Black urban communities across the country, branded as blighted areas, fell victim to the onslaught of postwar urban redevelopment as city leaders initiated massive renewal projects aimed at both bolstering the appeal and accessibility of the urban center and clearing out large sections of urban black neighborhoods. Between the years 1943 and 1983, Dallas city officials directed a series of massive redevelopment projects that decimated each of the city’s black communities, displacing thousands and leaving these communities in a state of disarray.2 This paper, which focuses on the historically black Dallas community of North Dallas, argues that residential segregation, which forced the growth and evolution of North Dallas, ultimately led to the development of slum conditions that made North Dallas a target for postwar slum clearance projects which only served to exacerbate blight within the community. Founded in 1869 by former slaves, North Dallas, formerly known as Freedman’s Town, is one of the oldest black neighborhoods in Dallas.3 Located just northeast of downtown and bounded by four cemeteries to the north and white-owned homes to the south, east, and west, the area became the largest and most densely populated black settlement in the city. Classification of Ammonitic Sutures Using Gis
Palaeontologia Electronica http://palaeo-electronica.org PATTERN MATCHING: CLASSIFICATION OF AMMONITIC SUTURES USING GIS Lori L. Manship ABSTRACT Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is utilized to apply spatial analysis tech- niques to visually and quantitatively match ammonoid suture patterns for classification. The Turonian ammonite family Coilopoceratidae was chosen as the basis for this project, because the similar suture patterns within the family make species-level identi- fication a challenge. A Coilopoceras springeri suture template was created by overlay- ing 10 different Coilopoceras springeri suture patterns, using the right holotype suture pattern as the basal or designation guide. Templates for Coilopoceras colleti and Hopli- toides sandovalensis sutures were constructed in the same manner. Sutures of known and unknown specimens were tested within the templates in order to identify species. The sutures of known specimens matched with the correct templates and did not com- pare well with other species’ templates. Sutures of unknown specimens clearly fit within one template better than within others and, hence, could be reliably classified to the species level. In addition to species classification, the GIS method provides a mechanism for both visual and quantitative comparisons of individual sutures. This GIS method will aid professional and avocational paleontologists, biostratigraphers, and geologists in classifying ammonite species, and may help further our understanding of suture morphogenesis and function by providing a standard basis for morphological comparison of complex sutural patterns.
