    Jimmy D. Lane Biography "Son of the Blues" At the age of 47, Jimmy D. Lane has already led quite a full life. The musicians he knows makes for an impressive resume. He has worked with Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Jim Keltner, Keith Richards, B.B. King, Van Morrison, Jonny Lang, Gary Moore, Double Trouble, Taj Mahal, Stephen Stilles, Jeff Healy, Jimmie Lee Robinson, Lowell Fulson, and Snooky Pryor, Kim Wilson, Pinetop Perkins, Johnny ‘Big Moose’ Walker, Johnnie Johnson, Kim Wilson, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Harry Hypolite, George ‘Wild Child’ Butler, David ‘HoneyBoy’ Edwards, Weepin’ Willie Robinson, Little Hatch, Nancy Bryan, Willie Kent, Henry Gray, Lazy Lester and Eomot RaSun. He has also worked with venerable blues greats such as Sam Lay, Hubert Sumlin, Carey Bell, Dave Meyers and his father, the legendary Jimmy Rogers. Born July 4th, 1965 in Chicago, he grew up in a household where he became acquainted with a veritable who's who of Chicago bluesmen. Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Mabon, Little Walter and Albert King, to name a few, would all stop by the house to visit the "old man." Coming from this environment has instilled in Lane the deepest respect for elder statesmen of the blues. "I feel blessed and fortunate, to have known all those cats, and I do not take it for granted." At the age of eight, he began playing his dad's guitar, which he wasn't supposed to do. "I would break a string and put it back in the case like he wasn't going to discover it," Lane recalls.

About a year and a half lat- er, we started working on what would eventually become our biggest release, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost R&B Grooves From Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979. What follows is our attempt to share with you some of the amazing stories, history, and photos that have been so gracious- ly shared with us during the course of producing a compilation of soulful tunes from our hometown. ..... R&B, soul, and funk music in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota went through dra- matic changes during the 1960s and 1970s. Predating these changes, a vibrant jazz scene beginning in the 1920s laid the groundwork with several players being instrumental in helping teach young local R&B mu- sicians how to play. However, many of the early R&B pioneers, including Mojo Buford, Maurice McKin- nies, and Willie Walker, came to Minnesota from other states and brought the music with them.

    Paul began playing at age 12, on an acoustic guitar that his dad had “broken in” singing pro-labor and “peoples’ songs” while performing at union rallies and concerts in the late ‘40’s. An entirely self-taught player, Paul used as his early models the music in his dad’s 78 and LP collection- records by Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Blind Willie Johnson, Leadbelly, Uncle Dave Macon, Woody Guthrie, Jimmy Driftwood, and Flatt and Scruggs, as well as jazz and gospel discs by Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, The Staple Singers, and Mahalia Jackson. Soon after hearing the music coming out of bars on Chicago’s South Side, howev- er, he single-mindedly started playing electric guitar, trying to evoke the sounds of Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. His career began at age 18 “in the trenches” of Pepper’s Lounge, the 1815 Club, Theresa’s, and other haunts, as a sideman to Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Junior Wells and other fixtures of the Chicago blues scene. Gigs, tours and recordings followed, with legends like John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sam Lay, Pops Staples, Donny Hathaway and Lightnin’ Slim. During this time he appeared on the milestone recording “Fathers and Sons” featuring Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield and also played on “The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions” LP, fea- turing Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and members of the Rolling Stones. In 1971, needing a “spiritual battery recharge” he made the move to rural Vermont. The idea was to go as far from his “urban music roots” as possible- he bought a tiny piece of land in the shadow of breathtaking Camel’s Hump Mountain, built a geodesic dome, and attempted to live “like normal folks who didn’t live the music life 24 hours a day”.
