This dissertation attempts to answer the question "Do the methodological and epistemological proposals of John M. Frame have anything to contribute to the construction of a contextual evangelical theology in South Africa - a theology which is both faithful to its evangelical roots and yet radically engaged with the contemporary context?" This question is dealt with in four stages. Firstly, Frame's theology is expounded against the background of its context in America~ Secondly, four aspects of Frame's theology are critically evaluated. They are perspectivalism, theology as application, hermeneutics, and the relationship between theology and praxis. This evaluation has three dimensions. It investigates the relationship between Frame's theology and the historic Reformed tradition. It examihes the use that is made of Frame's theology by othe~ theologians related to the Westminster Seminaries, in particular, the work of Harvie M. Conn and Vern S. Poythress. Finally, the evaluation seeks to examine the usefullness of Frame's theology in the South Afrian context. This analysis results in the identification of certain weaknesses in Frame's methodological proposals. The conclusion of this dissertation is that Frame's theology provides certain methodological tools which can be employed in the construction of a contextual South African theology which is both radically engaged with its context, and faithful to the core of the evangelical tradition. For this to be possible it is proposed that certain modifications need to be made to overcome the weaknesses of Frame's theology. These modifications are the following: the integration of a strongly christological approach to Frame's concept of lordship with particular reference to a theology of the cross; the affirmation that God is, in a particular way, the God of the poor and oppressed; an understanding of the accommodated and context-relatedness of biblical revelation, and the incorporation of perspectives from the sociology of knowledge. The central thesis of this dissertation is that John M. Frame's epistemological and methodological proposals'can play a major role in developing a contextual evangelical theology in South Af~ica. This introduction will seek to justify this proposal by engaging in three tasks. Firstly, certain key concepts will be defined, secondly, the origins and purpose of this research will be discussed, and thirdly, the methodology that is used will be outlined. 1 DEFINITIONS. The New Westminster Theology refers to a new methodological approach to theology that ha~ been developed within the context o£ the Westminster theological seminaries in the U.S.A. Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia was started in 1930 to preserve and further the Old Princeton tradition'and more recently a new seminary was established in Escondido, California. The theology produced by the Westminster faculty has shifted from a largely defensive to a more creative stance. Part of this shift has been the epistemological and methodological proposals of John M. Frame who teaches apologetics and systematic theology at the California campus. He has interacted extensibly with the New Testament scholar, Vern S. Poythr~ss, who teaches at the Philadelphia campus. Harvie Conn, a Missiologist at the Philadelphia campus has made a creative use of Frame's and Poythress' ideas. This dissertation will focus on 2 Frame's work but will also interact with that of Poythress and Conn. The title ''evangelical" has been used in a wide variety of contexts with different meanings. In the context of this thesis it refers to that group of traditions, institutions and people who bear certain family resemblances. The. concept of family resemblance refers to the similarities and differences often seen in a family. Each member of the family will have some of the family characteristics, but in varying degrees. Yet there is an unmi~takable resemblance amongst the members of the family. The family characteristics of evangelicalism would include the following. A strong emphasis on the supreme authority of Scripture; this emphasis is shared by all members of the famiiy, but it is understood in a number of different ways. The acceptance of the historic orthodox creeds of the church. An understanding of salvation as by_ grace alone through faith alone.

Gresham Machen a copy of Emil Brunner's recently released The Theology of Crisis and asked for some advice on marketing the book. Though Machen had already in the minds of many established his reputation as a cantankerous fundamentalist when he left Princeton for Westminster Sem­ inary, he was still a natural resource for the publisher's request. Machen himself was well acquainted with New York publishers since all of his books to that time had been published with MacMillan, and his newest, The Virgin Birth of Christ, was ready to go to press at Harper and Brothers. More importantly, Machen had heard Brunner lecture the previous year when the Swiss theologian visited Princeton. On that occasion Brunner had ex­ pressed "a special desire" to meet Machen. And according to Douglas Horton, the man responsible for the first English translation of Karl Barth, Brunner spoke of Machen's work "in the highest terms." Furthermore, some at Scribner's probably thought a positive evaluation of Brunner and Barth from Machen, one of the leading spokesmen for conservative Prot­ estantism, would boost sales among fundamentalists. Machen, however, in what became his typical response to inquiries about neoorthodoxy, said that he did not think the theology of crisis was a return to evangelical Chris­ tianity, but his limited knowledge made final judgment difficult. Introduction Reformed Trinitarian theism best encapsulates the theology of Cornelius Van Til. He says, "Basic to all the doctrines of Christian theism is that of the self-contained God, or, if we wish, that of the ontological Trinity. It is this notion of the ontological Trinity that ultimately controls a truly Christian methodology."1 Again, "unless we may hold to the presupposition of the self- contained ontological Trinity, human rationality itself is a mirage."2 The onto- logical Trinity provides the architectonic principle in Van Til's theology and apologetic. However, the doctrine of the Trinity in Van Til's thought is as controversial as it is foundational. Regarding the Trinity, Van Til makes the following state- ments, which, when taken together, provide a formulation which John Frame called "a very bold theological move."3 What is this bold move? Van Til argues: It is sometimes asserted that we can prove to men that we are not assuming anything that they ought to consider irrational, inasmuch as we say that God is one in essence and three in person. We therefore claim that we have not asserted unity and trinity of exactly the same thing. Yet this is not the whole truth of the matter. We do assert that God, that is, the whole Godhead, is one person.4 Notice that Van Til does not assert that the person/essence formulation is false, or in need of replacement; instead, he argues that the statement "God is one in essence and three in person" does not yield the "whole truth of the matter." Again Van Til says, "We must hold that God's being holds an absolute numeri- cal identity.

Morgan Pious and Critical Scholarly Paradigms of the Pentateuch — during the 19th & early 20th centuries by Spencer Morgan Abstract This paper examines the antithesis between Christian scholarship and modern higher criticism of the Pentateuch during the 19th and early 20th centuries. During the 19th century, the popularization and eventual hegemony of the Doc- umentary Hypothesis revolutionized the field of Biblical studies. Modern criti- cal scholars claimed that Moses did not write the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) during the 15th century BC, but rather it was the product of a later redaction of at least four separate documents: J, E, P, and D. Writing hundreds of years apart and long after Moses, their authors reflect not the ancient covenantal religion of Moses, but rather various periods in the evolution of Israel’s religion. The implications of the Documentary Hypothe- sis bring into question the historicity and theological validity of not only the Pen- tateuch, but also the Christian New Testament which presupposes it. The goal of this research is to identify the foundational presuppositions, conclusions, and contextual consciousness that both the modern critics and the Reformed body of Christian scholars opposing them brought to their scholarship.

Churchill, moderator of the Twenty-first General Assembly, opened the Communion Service preceding the Twenty-second General Assemlbly at 8 P.M., May 25, 1955, in the Cslvary Church of Glenside, Pa. Mr. Churchill delivered a sermon on the subject “The Gospel Invitation”, using as his text Isaiah 55:l. Following the sermon, the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was administered by Mr. Churchill, as- sisted <by the Rev. Francis E. Mahaffy and the Rev. Lawrence N. Manross, Ph.D., and Ruling Elders L. H. Barker, L. G. Brown, B. A. Cooky, and Charles H. Phillips. THURSDAY MORNING Following a devotional service led by the Rev. Lawrence R. Eyres, at 8.30, the Twenty-second General Assembly was called to order at 9 o’clock in the Calvary Church of Glenside and constituted with prayer by Mr. Churchill.     WTJ 50 (1988) 247-256 A HALF-CENTURY OF REFORMED SCHOLARSHIP MOÏSES SILVA ELEBRATING fifty years of anything invites reflection, Cand we will, I hope, be pardoned for indulging ourselves upon completing the fiftieth volume of a scholarly journal. The character and purpose of our publication were clearly set forth by its initial editors. Readers who have no access to the first issue may appreciate my quoting the introductory statement in full: If we are not mistaken (and editors, like others, sometimes make mis­ takes), more periodicals are dying than are being born at the present time. The Westminster Theological Journal in sending out its first issue is, therefore, going against the current of the times. It is doing that in a more important sense, however, than merely by the fact of publication. The Journal is founded upon the conviction that the Holy Scriptures are the word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and of practice, and that the system of belief commonly designated the Reformed Faith is the purest and most consistent formulation and expression of the system of truth set forth in the Holy Scriptures. This position is the position of the Faculty of Westminster Theological Seminary, and the Journal is edited by two members of that Faculty on behalf of the entire body. We stand today in the Christian Church as debtors to nineteen centuries of Christian history, thought, and experience. It would not only be futile but wrong to try to dissociate ourselves from the great stream of Christian tradition. Other men laboured and we have entered into their labours.
