JAZZ HISTORY & TRIVIA…………………..

Begun in 1946, the Australian Jazz Convention is the longest running annual Jazz event in the world. The Convention archives are housed at the Australian Jazz Museum which maintains a collection of Australian and overseas jazz material. The Australian Jazz Museum arose out of a meeting held in Sydney on 23rd June 1996 to address growing concern among the jazz community that the rich Australian Jazz heritage was at risk of being lost. The inaugural meeting of the Australian Jazz Museum was held at the then Whitehorse Hotel in Melbourne on 18th August 1996. www.ajm.org.au

SOUTH COAST JAZZ FESTIVAL 18 OCTOBER - 20 OCTOBER 2019 A new jazz festival will take place in the town of Goolwa on the same weekend as the previous festival that was held at Mur- ray Bridge. We have selected Goolwa be- cause of the excellent facilities available to us and we are particularly pleased that we have secured a number of venues that are strictly walking distance apart.

Where were you born? (Town, city, etc.). - I was born at Eildon House, Ballarat Base Hospital on 7th September 19??.

Is there something in particular that you remember of your childhood? - Playing a drum at Urquhart Street P. S. for the children to march into class and buying my first and only bike at age 12 to ride to Ballarat High School.

Did you have a favourite subject during your schooling? - Loved Maths & Science. Disliked History & French.

What musical interests did you have if any? - Playing Tenor Horn in the Soldiers Memorial Junior Brass Band. (Uncle played Tenor Horn in the senior band.) Later playing drums with a group called The Ramblers around the Gordon, Bal- lan, Bacchus Marsh area, also played with a group called The Vogues in Ballarat, Beaufort & Daylesford. Did you have a childhood ambition (fireman, nurse, vet, etc.)? - To work in an office. Ac- counting.

What career paths did you eventually pursue? - Motor Mechanic. 1955 – 1993. Worst decision ever. Pricing Analyst. 1994 – 2007. Best decision ever. At what stage, did you become interested in jazz? - Jazz was an acquired taste in music later in life after growing up with The Beetles, The Shadows etc.

Do you play an instrument, or do you wish you could play an instrument? - Took up drum- ming again after a fifty-year break. Now playing with two other seniors. One plays piano and the other plays violin.

Have you travelled? Where? Never travelled outside Australia. My most memorable trip was to Perth by train. Changed trains 3 times before arriving in Perth. Ballarat to Adelaide, Adelaide to Port August, Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie, Kalgoorlie to Perth. Do you have any other interests? Member of Eureka Probus Club for 11 years.

If you had your life over again, would you choose a different career and if so, what would it be? - Would never choose to be a mechanic. Something clean. I. T. would be appealing.

If you had the opportunity, who would you like to invite to a dinner party? Any reasons why? Pete Fountain, Glenn M illar, The Seekers and many more. All great musicians with wonderful life stories.

Who is your favourite musician (dead or alive)? - Do not have a favourite musician. My musical taste is far too varied to choose a favourite. What is your name? - Alan Trevenen.

It was such a lovely keep……..Don privilege to meet her and to learn about her history in Jazz, it is obvious the talent that Burrows runs in the family. Her quality singing and friendly personality was certainly well re- ceived by everyone that attended. I was so very pleased to be able to chat with her briefly during her performance and to meet her in person. At our next gig on 16th June, the very popular Sugarfoot Ramblers return. The level of musicianship that will be displayed, will be certainly worth hearing. They are a young and energetic band, playing some old-style jazz. I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the afternoon of great music and friendship. I would like to remind everyone to renew their membership and help promote the club. Let’s spread the word about the privileges of being a member, not only do you have the opportunity of hearing great jazz at a discounted rate, it is also a great opportunity to form new friendships. It is my aim to reach the magic 200 members but without your support and encouragement, this will be difficult to reach. I look forward to seeing you all at the next gig.

Playing the hottest trad jazz this side of New Orleans, Shirazz is one of Melbourne's most sought-after jazz bands. They meld raucous, high-energy trad, laid-back Louisiana street beats, and sleazy and salacious blues in their witty and irreverent live show. Since 2009, Melbourne's Shirazz Jazz Band has held a reputation for their raucous, high-energy trad jazz sound. They've become known as a must-have festival band, attracting invitations from all over the county, and from overseas as well. They keep a busy festival schedule, having appeared at dozens of jazz, blues and folk festivals including the prestigious Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival and the New Zealand National Jazz Festival. They've also done a number of self-promoted tours across the eastern states and South Australia, where they have been greeted with packed houses and standing ova- tions. Shirazz's music is born in the New Orleans tradition but they are no means bound by it. Shirazz extends the genre to inject humour, original compositions, novel rearrange- ment of pop hits, European folk influences, and their own larrikin style to create a unique and exciting sound: a jazz flavour like no other.

Elissa Rodger was inspired to explore the world of jazz after being exposed to the Coltrane and Hart- man ballads album when she was 15. The ‘Elissa Rodger Band’ was formed in 2013 and has been going from strength to strength. Elis- sa and her band are influenced by artists such as Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderly and Kurt El- ling and the ensemble strives to challenge each other and explore new musical ideas.

Steve Waddell’s “Creole Bells Revival Band”

Steve Waddell – trombone, Bob Pattie – cornet, Graeme Pender – clarinet, Doug Rawson – piano, Tony Orr – banjo & Alan Stott – tuba. Beverly Sheehan – vocals.

The Band, that Steve told us, began in 1978 & still going strong, presented a bright & breezy programme, that also featured well loved Jazz Singer Bev Sheehan, who, as it turned out, sang on the Band’s 1st ever 3 nights.

Sets & breaks were kept short, & began with a foot tapping version of ‘Once in a While’,(in the key of B flat, I’m guessing Bob?). Bev came to the stage, saying that she knew she was in Ballarat – “it’s that cold”. She began by singing ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ following up with ‘There’ll be no Freebies’.

Bev & Steve both gave interesting intro’s to their tunes ie: composer, history, background & year, which added to the overall entertainment, along with a smat- tering of funny ‘fill-in dialogue’, whilst the ‘players’ fossiked for music pages.

In one of the breaks, President Gerard held a short impromptu interview with Bev, & she began by answering the question about her gospel singing – for the last 4 years, she has sung at the Sunday morning Jazz Mass at the Phillip Island Festi- val. Gerard mentioned that some people wouldn’t realize she was the sister of The Seekers’ Judith Durham – they actually began as the popular vocal duo Bev & Ju- dy, ‘with the Golden Tonsils’.

If I’ve got it right,she first sang at Smacka FitzGibbon’s at the age of 30, know- ing only 3 songs, & after a stint as his drink waitress - her first song being Red Red Robin. After some time spent overseas, she returned to do a 13 month season with Roger Bell, & sang at Richmond great Jack Dyer’s Pub. Bev was regular vocalist with the Storyville Band in the 70’s & 80’s, saying that most of her inspira- tion came from Betty Smith. Some other numbers she sang were ‘Lonely Nights’, ‘Struttin’ With Lilly’, ‘Monia Mourners’ & ‘Who’s Sorry Now’.

Some excellent solos from each player in the Band were a highlight, with numbers including the old rag ‘1919’, Smacka’s, ‘Mandy’ & ‘The Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave Me’, Louis Armstrong’s, ‘Shimmy Like My Sister Kate’ & Turk Murphy’s ‘Saloon’. The last vocal number of the day was a duet from Bev & Steve – an up tempo version of ‘Maggie’, & then an encore from the band - ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’.
