ABSTRACT Lifestyle-related illnesses are a major cause of mortality and the health and wellbeing benefits of engagement with the natural environment are well documented. However, certain groups are under-represented in visitor figures, therefore this pathway to wellbeing is being received disproportionately. Nature-based interventions (NBIs) seek to extend benefits to wider, often otherwise marginalised social groups, but there is a lack of long term research meaning that the sustainability of effects is unknown. The primary aim of this study was to develop an improved understanding of one such initiative on personal wellbeing and woodland use over time. The research involved adults with a range of health and social care needs recruited from Actif Woods Wales, a pan-Wales woodland activity programme. A quantitative study assessed participants at baseline (n = 120), end of course (n= 74) and a three month follow up stage (n = 57). A parallel qualitative study enabled an in- depth appreciation of processes of change with five end of course and four follow up focus groups. End of course quantitative results demonstrated significant positive increase across all psychosocial measures, (mental wellbeing, social trust, self-reported health, self-efficacy, self-esteem and physical activity) with particularly marked gains for those who had reported mental health conditions. The study showed that these gains had held at the three month follow up stage providing critical evidence of maintained change. With regard to independent woodland visits, the frequency of visits had increased at course end and the indication at follow up was that this trend continued to rise. Qualitative data showed positive shifts in self-perspective that had followed through to wider lifestyle changes which for some meant breaking out of a ‘rut’ of sedentariness and social isolation. These results were particularly important to understanding the importance of social processes and how confidence gained on the programme had led to increased interaction beyond it. Participant narratives showed how nature was experienced as a kind of ‘balm’ (the sensory experience, the positive impact on mood, feelings of escape) and played an important role in supporting the wellbeing benefits experienced. This altered perception of nature was maintained which had led to more and different use of woodlands (like spending longer there and ‘making more of it’). Breaking down deeply entrenched psychological, emotional and socio-cultural barriers, it was evident that the programme could act as an adult greenspace turning or re-turning point. The study has helped to meet identified gaps for research that furthers understanding of how NBIs can support health, wellbeing and increased woodland use beyond the life of programmes. Findings thus hold implications regarding a need for sustainable funding and support for such projects to embed the role that they can play in delivering both therapeutic and preventative social care. They also point to a role for land managers looking to increase engagement for under-represented groups to consider the role that NBIs can play in broadening access to the benefits of the natural environment.     “Not Just Supporting But Leading”: The Involvement of the Women of the South Wales Coalfield in the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike By Rebecca Davies Enrolment: 00068411 Thesis submitted for Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Glamorgan February 2010. ABSTRACT The 1984-85 miners’ strike dramatically changed the face of the South Wales Valleys. This dissertation will show that the women’s groups that played such a crucial supportive role in it were not the homogenous entity that has often been portrayed. They shared some comparable features with similar groups in English pit villages but there were also qualitative differences between the South Wales groups and their English counterparts and between the different Welsh groups themselves. There is evidence of tensions between the Welsh groups and disputes with the communities they were trying to assist, as well as clashes with local miners’ lodges and the South Wales NUM. At the same time women’s support groups, various in structure and purpose but united in the aim of supporting the miners, challenged and shifted the balance of established gender roles The miners’ strike evokes warm memories of communities bonding together to fight for their survival. This thesis investigates in detail the women involved in support groups to discover what impact their involvement made on their lives afterwards. Their role is contextualised by the long-standing tradition of Welsh women’s involvement in popular politics and industrial disputes; however, not all women discovered a new confidence arising from their involvement. But others did and for them this self-belief survived the strike and, in some cases, permanently altered their own lives.

    RURAL RAMBLE BANWEN ROMAN & WATERFALL HERITAGE TRAIL Walk in the footsteps of the Romans - see a spectacular waterfall Banwen, best known as a former mining village, has a fascinating history long before mining - over 2000 years. The village is close to the ancient Roman fort of Ricus, first after Nidum (Neath) on the ‘A470’ of the times, the road between Nidum and Segontium (Caernarfon). Until recently, there was little in Banwen to mark its Roman connections, but a mosaic has been fashioned at the start of the southern part of Sarn Helen and there are other, less obvious, signs of the occupation. Legend has it that Irish patron saint Patrick was born here and a plaque has been erected on a standing stone alongside Roman Road marking this fact. The walk takes in a distinctive natural feature of the area, Henrhyd Waterfall, and a few pointers to the railway, past and present in Coelbren and Onllwyn. The Route in detail Leaving the bus stop at Banwen (GR 856097), Roman Road is ahead, an indication of the significance of the walk. Take a right turn and you will see terraces of houses on the road ahead and a path beyond heading towards the mountain. This is Sarn Helen and at the top of the street, evidence in the form of a very fine mosaic marking its route through Wales. Retrace your steps to a point just beyond the road junction where there is a plaque (right) marking the alleged birthplace of St Patrick. If correct, this makes the patron saint of Ireland a Welshman.
