Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library David Getz An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2020 © 2020 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of David Getz INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 60 pages INTERVIEW DATE: January 9, 2020 In this oral history, musician and artist David Getz discusses his life and musical career. Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer.

For Immediate Release contact [email protected], 646-492-4076 Jayne County Paranoia Paradise Curated by Michael Fox February 4 – March 11, 2018 Opening Reception, Sunday, February 4, 7-9pm I think that my art serves as a way of putting out the fuse before it becomes a ballistic bomb of some sort. Some people are at odds with the world and they become serial killers, and others become artists. –Jayne County From February 4 – March 11, 2018, PARTICIPANT INC is honored to present Jayne County, Paranoia Paradise, the first retrospective exhibition of County’s visual artwork, curated by Michael Fox. Although County’s artistic output began in experimental theater in the late 1960s-early ‘70s, including work with Theater of the Ridiculous and in Andy Warhol’s Pork, she is perhaps most well-known as a rock singer and performer. This exhibition takes its title from one of County’s songs, Paranoia Paradise, which she famously performed as the character of “Lounge Lizard” in Derek Jarman’s 1978 film, Jubilee. Selections of her earliest known paintings and works on paper made in the early ‘80s while living in Berlin will be exhibited alongside works made up until the present, with approximately eighty pieces on view from County’s studio as well as several private collections. A presentation of related ephemeral materials from County’s archive, as well as photographs by Bob Gruen, Leee Black Childers, and Michael Fox will accompany the exhibition and further illuminate her legendary contributions to music, film, performance, as well her role as forebear and gender pioneer as the first openly transgender rock performer.

Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

  • Joplin, Janis (1943-1970) by Teresa Theophano
Joplin, Janis (1943-1970) by Teresa Theophano Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The name Janis Joplin is practically synonymous with the excesses epitomized by the counterculture of the 1960s: sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, all of which Joplin took to extreme levels. As troubled as she was talented, Joplin has been portrayed in numerous articles, full-length biographies, and documentaries as everything from a reckless, sex-crazed party animal to a victimized, lost little girl who never believed she was lovable. The truth is likely somewhere in between--but what is clear is that Joplin's musical legacy lives on and crosses barriers of gender, race, and class. Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 in small, insular Port Arthur, Texas, where she grew up. She always stood out as a bright, creative misfit in her oil-refinery hometown. She stood out too in her rather conservative family, preferring to pursue visual art and music rather than fulfill her mother's expectations of her becoming a schoolteacher. Joplin reportedly relished the attention that gossip about her bad-girl image brought, but her status as a social outcast hurt her deeply and would remain with her throughout her short life. For a while Joplin attended Lamar State College of Technology and then the University of Texas at Austin, but she decided that school was not for her and never graduated. During her college years she began singing at the hootenannies of the day and at bars in the Austin, San Francisco, and Venice, California areas.

Over to you 2002/2003 Close View 2 – Special Report Programnr: 02060/ra2 CLOSE VIEW 2 – Punk Rock 25 Years Old Manuscript: Keith Foster Producer: Keith Foster Broadcasting date: 9/10, 2002 Length: 15’ Music: Sex Pistols ”God Save the Queen” Keith Foster: Welcome to Close View! I’m Keith Foster. Ex-punk. This year in England the Queen has celebrated her golden jubilee – that’s fifty years on the throne… 25 years ago, in 1977, it was her Silver Jubilee, and people then had parties in the streets to celebrate. Then along came this band, the Sex Pistols, and spoilt the party. The song called the Queen a moron, and it made the Sex Pistols the most hated band in Britain - ever. Newspapers called for them to be put in prison, and in the end their record company sacked them. Twice. Suddenly, punk rock had made its mark. If you liked punk you liked loud music, an dance called the pogo, which meant just jumping up and down really, often on the person in front of you, and you put safety pins through your clothes, your ears, your nose, your cheeks, your…...well, anywhere. And you were angry. Very angry. Music mix: “Stranglehold” by UK Subs Oh Bondage Up Yours” by X-ray Spex “Anarchy in the UK” by Sex Pistols “Too drunk to fuck” by Dead Kennedys KF: You didn’t have to be very musical… Punk rock exploded in Britain in 1977. If you were a teenager almost everyone you knew picked up a guitar or a drum set and started to make a lot of noise.
