Over the course of one year and with the use of a video camera, I recorded, observed, hung out and watched television with the girls in the informal setting of a friend’s house. I found that friendship informs and filters understandings and use of tween television in daily conversations with friends. Using Erving Goffman’s theory of facework as a starting point, I introduce a new theoretical framework called friendship work to locate, examine, and understand how friendship is enacted on a granular level. Friendship work considers how an individual positions herself for her own needs before acknowledging the needs of her friends, and is concerned with both emotive effort and social impact. Through group television viewings, participation in television themed games, and the creation of webisodes, the girls strengthen, maintain, and diminish previously established bonds.

As research has shown that representation of ethnicity may be especially influential to children viewers, and that there are precedents for problematic racial representations in popular media, including children's media, the continued examination of patterns of racial-ethnic group member representation and stereotyping in character depictions has significant implications. Utilizing textual analysis, three Nicktoons’ programs are examined for racialized constructions of characters, including constructions with hegemonic and ethnocentric implications. The thesis argues that three programs, Back at the Barnyard, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of JuJu problematically construct analogies of African Americans, Asians, and native peoples, respectively. The constructions in these Nicktoons programs typically “other” these groups when contrasted to dominant white culture -- or at least the animated stand-ins for dominant white culture -- and imply cultural hierarchies in which white culture is superior and/or the norm.

We are dedicating the middle section of the newsletter (typically a featured program or office) to the families of our incoming students. There are many things to remember about move-in day and orientation, and these last-minute tips and reminders will help prepare you for your student’s arrival. News and Deadlines Health Insurance RIT expects all students to carry medical insurance. Students may use family or individual policies or obtain RIT insurance. If your student will use a family plan, please contact the company to determine what coverage your student has in Rochester (many companies have limited out-of-network coverage). Your student's ability to find providers and obtain reimbursement for health care expenses may be limited. RIT offers a robust Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) student health insurance plan through Aetna Student Health. The plan offers an expansive provider network across the U.S. and out-of-network benefits are available. Enrollment in the RIT plan is voluntary for domestic students; international students on some visas are automatically enrolled in the plan each semester.
