True North is…

• A Modern Times for Northern Ireland • Contemporary, surprising, uplifting • The main course, the beating heart • A returning series • Our legacy True North brand – what makes it distinctive?

• True North is a series of fresh, new, revelatory, single documentaries from BBC Northern Ireland.

• In this strand extraordinary stories are told by ordinary people. True North speaks of something fresh, about contemporary life here, stories are told through a personal lens

• True North stories will always be uniquely personal and individual. Stories that will not necessarily be widely known or elements of well-known stories which have never been told before

With True North, you get stories that will engage and expand the mind. We want… • A wide range of ideas • A series that runs twice or three times a year • Brief – to – Commission: Sept to Dec & March to June • We will commission in batches twice a year • 12 (may rise to 18) slots in any year – 9 commissioned so far for tx in 2014 • 3 x 30 slots available for 2014 • We would like to have one new director per run Landmark Landmark …

• A range of ideas: big moments; elemental; NI as the subject; or the setting for big ideas eg: Road • A proposition with depth and purpose eg: The Disappeared • Confident 9pm films with mass appeal eg: Dead Fat, The Turbulent Priest • Likely to also tx on a BBC network • We want to punch through with massive ambition • Gritty, shocking, revelatory: get NI talking Landmark …

• These ideas take time, so talk to us at any time

• Network interest for Nations-to-Network propositions

• Partnership funding is attractive and often necessary for projects of scale

• 1 x 60 still available for 2014 • 8 x 60 for 2015

• Commission in batches: autumn and spring Landmark Output: Reach and Quality

Storyville Irish Language Opportunities Irish Language opportunities

Tx slots: Sunday 2200 (60’) Monday 2200 (30’)

Aim to target a more mainstream audience by commissioning Irish Language content which has broader appeal across gender, Irish Language ability and socio-economic groups.

Commission more content which reflects normal and contemporary life – no need to be retrospective and delve back into history; talk about life today, stories that could perk interest, entertain, draw emotional reaction.

We have commissioned quite a number of landmark docs – we now favour returnable half-hour programmes in batches of 2, 3 or 4 in the Obs Doc and Fact Ent genres. Teenagers and young people are a big user-group of the Irish Language – we need programming to suit their interests and needs. What can we provide for them, and how? Ulster-Scots related content We are looking for Landmark Programming - 1 x 3 x 60 An Independent People; 5 Fables US Biographies – 4 x 30 singles - currently commissioned up, next opportunity Spring 2014

• Interested in new academic research, with a particular focus on treatments that link personal stories with social and cultural themes • High production values, creativity and editorial ambition • Opportunities around language – including links with Scots and exploring the work of different organisations and individuals and the variety of work that is on-going in this area • Programming which explores the development of Ulster-Scots identities, through references to literature, music and the arts and which explains (and contextualises) the re-kindling of interest in Ulster-Scots heritage Accessible content which respects the potential of its subject matter and which engages audiences with specialist knowledge or a more general interest in Ulster-Scots

Need for thorough underpinning research and for Ulster-Scots themes to be a developed and credible feature of commissioning proposals

There is flexibility on % investment – the USBF Committee recognises that Ulster-Scots themes may sometimes be best approached within the context of larger/wider programme proposals

Online or multi-media content is commissionable as an accompaniment to landmark programmes or series – where it adds depth and value Towards 2015/16 • Iniaves to • Looking for BIG grow the on- projects of scale screen and • Match network producon talent moments of the future • WW1 • Ceasefire Landmark Talent & Impact

True Genre-led North/ Our NI

• Comedy and • Aim to reach Drama our biggest more heartland challenges C2DE audiences • Next pilot scheme with True North • Comedy showcase series In Development We also have a number of stories and subjects in creative or stage two development. These are:

• Real religion • WW1

• Prisons • Reconciliation

• The Census/population change • Culture

• Trauma • Autism

• Education • Mental Health Summary of Current Priorities Big Projects/Landmark For 2015 and beyond. What will have scale and impact? Already across WW1 and Ceasefire.

True North/Emotional Connection In docs, history, True North and series. Contrast the setting with the warmth you feel for the characters.
