Peter Beard Biography 1938 Born in New York City, raised in New York City, Alabama, and Bayberry Point, Islip, Long Island, Peter Beard kept diaries at an early age. 1950 He took his first pictures and photography quickly evolved into an extension of his diaries, as a way to preserve and remember vacations and favorite things. 1955 First trip to Africa. 1957 Peter entered Yale University as a pre-medical student, but perceiving humans as the main disease soon switched to art history, studying under Vincent Scully, Joseph Albers, and Richard Lindner. 1960 Second trip to Africa, which piqued his interests. In the early 60s he worked at Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, during which time he photographed and documented the demise of over 35,000 elephants and 5000 Black Rhinos and published two The End of the Game books (1965 & 1977). 1966 Works with The Nuffield Unit of Tropical Ecology on a population dynamics study of elephants and hippopotamuses 1966 - 1968 Collaborates with Alistair Graham on crocodile study at Lake Rudolf for Kenya game department; later to become the basis of Eyelids of Morning– The Mingled Destines of Crocodiles and Men 1975 His first exhibit at the Blum Helman Gallery in New York. 1977 First one man show and landmark installation of his photographs, elephant carcasses, burned diaries, taxidermy, African artifacts, books and personal memorabilia at the International Center of Photography in New York City. 1996 Shortly after he was skewered and trampled by an elephant, his first major retrospective opened at the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, followed by other exhibits in Berlin, London, Toronto, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo and Vienna. -

Lost for decades, this extraordinary footage re-emerges in a film that focuses on Beard and his family of friends, who formed an enormously influential and vibrant SYNOPSIS creative community in Montauk, Long Island (NY) in the 1970s. Featuring Peter Beard, Lee Radziwill, Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale, Edith Bouvier Beale, Andy Warhol. Including footage directed by Peter Beard, Jonas Mekas, Andy Warhol and with additional cinematography by Albert Maysles and Vincent Fremont. “To me, this film is very much a love story. The Gordon Parks Foundation is proud to present Gordon Parks: Collages by Peter Beard, featuring collages made by Beard in 2013, incorporating and inspired by some of the best-known photographs from Parks’ legendary career. Friends and colleagues, these two pioneering figures shared an abiding interest in the power of photography to bring public attention to injustice, and to inspire passion for social change. Beard and Parks were friends and colleagues, mutual admirers from the moment they met through their agent, Peter Schub. In the early 1960s, Parks was an editorial magazine photographer for LIFE and Beard did some work for Diana Vreeland at VOGUE while he was studying art at Yale. Among their earliest interactions, Parks enlisted Beard as a model for a fashion shoot…”Peter Pan in Central Park.” But their shared respect went deeper, resting on their common interest in using the camera as a tool to address social and environmental problems. Parks’ empathetic picture stories brought wide public attention to the lives of the poor and marginalized, while Beard’s searing photographs of Kenya’s Tsavo wilderness, soon to be published in The End of the Game: The Last Word from Paradise, told the harrowing story of East Africa’s despoiled ecosystem and the endangerment of its wildlife. “Gordon was unstoppable,” Beard recalls. “And he was an amazing diplomat. At one of the most difficult times in African-American history, he was a soldier… a veritable ‘Jackie Robinson’ of the media world. Three words sum it all up for him: authenticity, atmosphere, and feeling.” The Beard collages featured in the exhibition include photographs from throughout Parks’ career, and were made in homage to the famous African-American photojournalist. -

Johnson collected a variety of books and periodicals over his lifetime, a mix of fiction and nonfiction works, spanning a range of subjects including the arts, natural sciences, language, religion, biography and literature. Ray Johnson Estate, Richard L. Feigen & Co. Biographical Note Ray Johnson was a collage artist, performance artist, pioneer mail artist, and early conceptualist. Born in Detroit, Michigan on October 16, 1927, Johnson was raised in a working class neighborhood and attended Cass Technical High School from 1942 to 1944 for drawing and graphic design. Before leaving Detroit in the summer of 1945, he also studied at the Detroit Art Institute and spent a summer in a drawing program at OxBow School in Saugatuck, Michigan, an affiliate of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was then enrolled at Black Mountain College (BMC) from 1945 to 1948, studying under Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, Lyonel Feininger, Alvin Lustig, Robert Motherwell, and Paul Rand.
