Tahlia Giannopoulas, of Melbourne, Australia Hi, My name is Tahlia Giannopoulas, I am 12 years old and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I discovered the art of quilling when I went on a cruise, I attended a few lessons and then bought some mini quilling kits they had. After making as many cards as I could with the quilling kit I went on the internet and discovered more. It wasn’t long before I started buying strips and supplies on the internet. After that I started making cards and more cards. Everybody I showed my cards to loved them, after a while I started getting orders. So then I thought I might as well come up with a business name which I now call Tahlia's QC. I joined a few quilling clubs and I made lot's of quilling friends that I often email. In 2006 at Christmas I sold 50 cards. This year I plan to double that. One day when walking through the streets I discovered this shop called " Inspired By You". It is a great shop that sells beautiful papers and other craft items. After showing the manager my quilling I will hopefully soon get to sell my cards there. My quilling is not the most spectacular thing around but over time it will get better and I hope that it will take me somewhere in the future. Meet ...... Our Guest Design Team Member Trina Hello, my name is Trina Stover and I live in Dunbar, West Virginia with my husband, Jerry, daughter, Jamee, two dogs, two rabbits, two leopard geckos, three birds, one hamster, two turtles, and a Chinese water dragon! We also have a daughter, Sherry, who is married and four adult sons – three in Florida, one in Texas, four grandchildren and another on the way! A few years ago I saw a pattern and instructions for a quilled animal in a child’s craft book. I thought this “new” craft looked really fun and decided to give it a try. Little did I know that Paper Quilling is a centuries- old art form known as Paper Filigree. Well, that was 2003 and I have been hooked on quilling ever since! As a child, I loved to play with paper. Given paper, scissors, and glue I could entertain myself for hours. Quilling gives me a “grown-up” way to play. Quilling is my passion and teaching the art to others is my favorite part! I also love to share by showing my work in art and craft shows, galleries, and gift shops throughout the State of West Virginia. It’s a joy to talk to those whom have never seen quilling and a privilege to share the history with them. If you are new to Quilling – Welcome! If you are one of us who are hooked on the craft – Enjoy! Either way, I hope your time spent rolling and coiling paper will inspire you to further explore this beautiful art form. Why not tell your quilling story? Or share some of your pictures in the Gallery? www.customquillingbydenise.com/CustomQuillingGallery All material and images are copyrighted to original creators. © www.CustomQuilling.com 2007 Page 5 Quill News August 2007 Reviews Heidi I can almost smell the turning leaves when I opened this kit. The fall color mix quilling strips from Lake City Crafts is rich in color and includes a wonderful wine color in the yellows to darks browns. Yes, it even has a bit of orange and black. The charms of leaves are great, the cardstock and vellums all work well together. The pumpkin buttons and fibers add a bit of color too. It is perfect to take with you on your annual drive through the country during the changing of the leaves. Trina The August kit is full of everything fun for fall. The fall assortment quilling paper from Lake City Craft Co includes vibrant colors from deep purple to green, gold, brown and black. The card stock and vellum paper are also in the rich fall hues. I love the coordinating ribbon and fibers. The pumpkin buttons are cute and the charms are ... well ... simply "Charming!" Ann The fall kit includes autumn themed supplies that provide inspiration for a wide variety of projects. The paper maché frame and cardstock can be decorated many different ways with the high quality charms, button, and ribbons. Happenings at CQ The CQ Monthly kits are now available by autoship please contact us for more information. During the months of July and August shipping may not be available on Saturdays. Summer office hours are 9 am to 5 pm eastern. Feel free to call anytime to leave a message, if I am in the office I always pick up! Custom Quilling is planning a mini meet late autumn at our new second location in Wilmington, NC. Please contact us if interested, the number of attendees will determine the location. • Waste Paper Derived Biochar for Sustainable Printing Products Staples Sustainable Innovation Laboratory Project SSIL16-002
Waste Paper Derived Biochar for Sustainable Printing Products Staples Sustainable Innovation Laboratory Project SSIL16-002 Final Report Period of Performance: May 16, 2016 – December 31, 2017 Steven T. Barber and Thomas A. Trabold (PI) Golisano Institute for Sustainability Rochester Institute of Technology 1 A. Executive Summary Rationale for Research The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) performed a research and development assessment in conjunction with the Staples Sustainable Innovation Laboratory (SSIL) to determine the potential of pyrolyzed waste paper as a novel, cost- effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable black pigment for use in common consumer and commercial printing applications (e.g. inkjet, lithography and flexography). To do so, the primary focus of the project was the creation and testing of a stable form of elemental carbon called “biochar” (BC) to replace the heavy fuel oil derived “carbon black” (CB) pigment ubiquitously used in inks since the late 1800’s. Reducing the use of CB would lessen the demand for fossil fuels, decrease printing’s environmental impact and potentially save money since biochars are typically created from free or low cost waste feedstocks which would ordinarily be disposed. Prior published scientific research and patents demonstrated that biochars could be successfully made from box cardboard, paper towels and glossy paper. If paper waste biochars could then be successfully transformed into a sustainable black ink pigment replacement, significant commercial potential exists since the global printing ink market is forecasted to reach $23.8 billion by 2023 and consumers would like the option of a more ‘green’ alternative.

  • Conservation of Coated and Specialty Papers
RELACT HISTORY, TECHNOLOGY, AND TREATMENT OF SPECIALTY PAPERS FOUND IN ARCHIVES, LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS: TRACING AND PIGMENT-COATED PAPERS By Dianne van der Reyden (Revised from the following publications: Pigment-coated papers I & II: history and technology / van der Reyden, Dianne; Mosier, Erika; Baker, Mary , In: Triennial meeting (10th), Washington, DC, 22-27 August 1993: preprints / Paris: ICOM , 1993, and Effects of aging and solvent treatments on some properties of contemporary tracing papers / van der Reyden, Dianne; Hofmann, Christa; Baker, Mary, In: Journal of the American Institute for Conservation, 1993) ABSTRACT Museums, libraries, and archives contain large collections of pigment-coated and tracing papers. These papers are produced by specially formulated compositions and manufacturing procedures that make them particularly vulnerable to damage as well as reactive to solvents used in conservation treatments. In order to evaluate the effects of solvents on such papers, several research projects were designed to consider the variables of paper composition, properties, and aging, as well as type of solvent and technique of solvent application. This paper summarizes findings for materials characterization, degradative effects of aging, and some effects of solvents used for stain reduction, and humidification and flattening, of pigment-coated and modern tracing papers. Pigment-coated papers have been used, virtually since the beginning of papermaking history, for their special properties of gloss and brightness. These properties, however, may render coated papers more susceptible to certain types of damage (surface marring, embedded grime, and stains) and more reactive to certain conservation treatments. Several research projects have been undertaken to characterize paper coating compositions (by SEM/EDS and FTIR) and appearance properties (by SEM imaging of surface structure and quantitative measurements of color and gloss) in order to evaluate changes that might occur following application of solvents used in conservation treatments.

  • North American Quilling Guild Official Shape Chart
North American Quilling Guild Official Shape Chart The following is a list of the recognized shapes and techniques the NAQG deems to be the basic shapes used in quillwork. Although each and every shape has numerous variations, these are the ones felt to be most commonly used by quillers. The NAQG official accepted name for each shape is listed under the photo. Alternate names are listed to the right. There seems to be no set standard amongst the various books, kits, self published instructions, or brochures as to the exact name for each quilled shape. The shape names seem to be randomly applied by whoever designs a quilled item or writes about one. Therefore any alternate names used to describe the shape (that the NAQG is aware of) have been included to help identify which shape is being referenced. Literally dozens of variations can be created from these basic shapes and most of them have no specific name. Other shapes have one or more variations that are given an “official” name as in the teardrop or marquise shapes. Both have a recognized variation with a separate name, i.e. shaped teardrop or shaped marquise.
