SECOND ROUND OPPONENT – MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES 2012-13 Regular Season Series (2-1 Grizzlies) Playoff Series (1-1 Thunder)
Thunder/Grizzlies Playoff Notes: The Thunder and Grizzlies are meeting in postseason play for just the second time in the history of the two franchises. During the first and only previous playoff meeting between the two clubs, Oklahoma City defeated Memphis (4 3) in the 2011 Western Conference Semifinals. The seven game series between the Thunder and Grizzlies represents the only seven game postseason series for the Thunder during the Oklahoma City era. During the Thunder’s Game 7 victory in Oklahoma City two years ago, Russell Westbrook became the fifth player in NBA history to record a triple double in a Game 7, joining Scottie Pippen (1992), James Worthy (1988), Larry Bird (1984) and Jerry West (1969) as the only players to accomplish such a feat. The Thunder will head to Memphis for Game 3 at the FedEx Forum on Saturday afternoon. During the Thunder’s opening round series versus Houston, Oklahoma City went 2 1 away from Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Oklahoma City entered the 2013 postseason having wrapped up the best record in the Western Conference (60 22) and the highest year end winning percentage for the franchise since the 1997 98 season (.744). Oklahoma City has advanced past the first round in each of the last three seasons after defeating the Houston Rockets (4 2), Dallas Mavericks (4 0) and the Denver Nuggets (4 1) in each of the last three years. The Thunder is the ONLY Western Conference team to advance past the first round in each of the last three seasons (Miami also accomplished the feat in the Eastern Conference). In each of the last two seasons, the Thunder advanced to the Western Conference Finals after defeating the Memphis Grizzlies (4 3) and the Los Angeles Lakers (4 1) in the 2011 and 2012 Conference Semifinals, respectively.
Tied 1-1: The Thunder will look to bounce back on Saturday in Game 3 after sustaining a 93 99 home loss on Tuesday evening. During this past season, the Thunder went 17 4 in games played after a loss (regular season only). During the 2011 Western Conference Semifinals, the Grizzlies and Thunder were tied at 1 1 after the first two games of the series which were played at Chesapeake Energy Arena (OKC later defeated MEM in 7 games).
Postseason Streak: With a game high 36 points during Game 2, Kevin Durant has now recorded 20+ points in 34 consecutive playoff games (5/15/11 – current). Michael Jordan is the last player to recorded a longer such streak in postseason play (47 consecutive games of 20+ from 5/27/96 – 6/14/98). During Game 1 on Sunday afternoon, Durant become the only player in franchise history to record 35+ points, 15+ rebounds and 6+ assists in a postseason game. With a playoff scoring average of 33.3 points per game, Durant has amazed 1,473 career playoff points which places him third on the franchises’ all time playoff leading scorer list behind Gus Williams (1,602) and Gary Payton (1,668).
Game Winner: Durant’s game winning jumper with 11.1 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of Game 1 vs. Memphis was his fourth game tying or go ahead shot in the final 24 seconds of a playoff game in the past five postseasons, tied for the most in the league with Ray Allen of the Miami Heat (ESPN Stats and Information).

………… …………… ……… … … OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER NOTES …… …… …...………………….
Best in the West: The Thunder enters the 2013 playoffs having wrapped up the most successful regular season in the Oklahoma City era. With a record of 60 22 (best in the OKC era), the Thunder heads into the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference after capturing a third straight Northwest Division title. Oklahoma City is now set to begin postseason play for a fourth consecutive season. In fact, Oklahoma City is now one of just two teams to currently maintain a .600 or better winning percentage in each of the last four seasons (San Antonio Spurs).
Sweet 60: With a victory versus the Sacramento Kings in the final days of the regular season, the Thunder claimed a 60 win season for the first time in the Oklahoma City era. In the all time history of the Thunder franchise, the team had recorded 60 or more wins three times previously, with the most recent occurrence coming during the 1997 98 season (61 21). To highlight the rarity of a 60 win season, in the past 20 seasons, 16 NBA franchises have failed to record a single season with 60 wins. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the Thunder became the fourth youngest team to win 60 games in NBA history (weighted by minutes played).
Better With Age: After the 2007 08 season in which Oklahoma City won 20 Season Winning % games after a 3 29 start, the Thunder has proceeded to increase its winning Current .732 (60-22) Secured # 1 seed percentage in each subsequent season. With a 60 22 record this season, 2011-12 .712 (47-19) Advanced to NBA Finals Oklahoma City became just the second team in NBA history (Boston Celtics; 1955 2010-11 .671 (55-27) Advanced to Conference Finals 1960) to increase its winning percentage for five consecutive seasons (while 2009-10 .610 (50-32) Lost in first round maintaining a winning percentage of .700 or better in two of those seasons). The 2008-09 .280 (23-59) Missed the playoffs chart to the right illustrates the Thunder’s improvement during each of the last five seasons.
Bouncing Back: Dating back to the start of the 2011 12 season, Oklahoma City has demonstrated a high level of resiliency in those games played immediately after a loss. This past season, the Thunder responded to losses by posting a 17 4 record in the ensuing game played after a loss. Since the start of the 2011 12 season, OKC is 32 7 in games played after a loss (best record in the NBA during this span).
Winning Big: The Thunder not only posted the top spot in the Western Conference this Team Record Point Differential season, but oftentimes Oklahoma City prevailed in convincing fashion. With the regular Bulls (1995-96) 72-10 12.2 season now complete, Oklahoma City registered a league leading point differential of 9.2 Bulls (1996-97) 69-13 10.4 points per game this past season {largest point differential since the 2007 08 Celtics (10.3 Bulls (1991-92) 66-16 10.4 point differential)}. Dating back to 1980, only six teams have finished with a larger point Celtics (2007-08) 66-16 10.3 differential greater than what the Thunder posted this past season (all six of those teams won NBA championships). During the 2012 13 season, OKC won 44 games by double figures Celtics (1985-86) 67-15 9.4 (most in the NBA), including 19 wins of 20 or more. The 19 wins of 20+ is tops in the NBA Lakers (1986-87) 65-17 9.3 this season and the most in the NBA in the last five seasons (the 2007 08 Celtics won 22 games by 20+). The chart to the right illustrates those teams since 1980 to finish a season with a point differential of 9.3 or greater.
Point Made: With the 2012 13 NBA season now complete, the Oklahoma City Thunder found itself among the league leaders in a number of offensive categories. By averaging 105.7 points per game, the Thunder recorded the most posts scored in the Oklahoma City era and the most for the franchise since the 1993 94 season (105.9 ppg). The chart below highlights the Thunder’s offensive rankings in a number of key categories.
OKC Thunder Rankings Category NBA Rank Points per game (105.7) 3rd Field goal percentage (.481) 3 rd Free throw percentage (.828) 1 st 3-point field goal percentage (.377) 3 rd Point differential (9.2) 1 st
Getting Defensive: As one might expect, team defense is always critical to overall team success. During the 2012 13 season, Oklahoma City held the opposition 96.5 points on 42.5% shooting. With respect to opponent field goal percentage, OKC held their opponents to the second worst field goal percentage in the NBA . On the year, OKC went 21 1 when limiting the opposition to sub 40.0% field goal shooting. The Thunder twice set an Oklahoma City era record this season by limiting the opponent to just 69 points (11/26 vs. CHA and 2/10 at PHX). On Feb. 24 th the Thunder held the Bulls to .291 shooting. The Bulls .291 shooting performance stands as an opponent low for the Thunder in the Oklahoma City era (and at the time, it was the lowest FG shooting percentage during the 2012 13 season). OKC also set a Thunder era record by limiting the Blazers to just seven third quarter points on Apr. 12.
Record of Success: Since the start of the 2009 10 season, only the San Antonio Spurs (219) and the Miami Heat (217) have claimed more victories than the Oklahoma City Thunder (212). Since Kendrick Perkins made his Oklahoma City debut in the middle of the 2010 11 season on 3/14/11 at Washington, the Thunder has posted a 119 45 record (.726).
Team Basketball: After defeating the Sacramento Kings on Apr. 15, Oklahoma City improved to 28 3 this past season when five or more players score 10+ points (OKC started season 14 0 when five players scored 10 or more). OKC went a perfect 5 0 when 6+ players score in double figures.
Home Cooking: During the 2012 13 season, the Thunder went 34 7 at Chesapeake Energy Arena (4 th best home record in the NBA) while registering a 13.0 point per game differential on their home floor (largest home point differential in the NBA). Prior to the team’s home finale, OKC had gone 32 0 when leading after three quarters (OKC lost the final game of the regular season at home after leading through three quarters). Before the Thunder’s home loss vs. Brooklyn on Jan. 2, Oklahoma City had reeled off 12 consecutive wins at the Chesapeake Energy Arena (second longest streak in the OKC era; won 14 consecutive outings during 2011 12 season). During the 2011 12 season (26 7 at home), the Thunder finished behind only Miami (28 5) and San Antonio (28 5) in the race for the NBA’s best home record.
Turnovers…or lack thereof: During the Thunder’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this season (Mar. 5), the Thunder matched an all time NBA record (which was set twice previously) by committing just two turnovers in the game. Prior to committing just two turnovers, five turnovers had been the previous all time low for the OKC franchise. On the season, Oklahoma City went 17 3 when committing 12 or fewer turnover.
50/40/90: This past season Kevin Durant became a member of the exclusive 50/40/90 club by shooting better than 50.0% from the field, 40.0% from 3 point range and 90.0% from the free throw line. Durant actually became just the second player in NBA history (Larry Bird; 1986 87 season) to average 28+ points while going 50/40/90 during the year. The chart below illustrates those players to finish a season going “50/40/90” (min 150 FT and 3FG attempts). To highlight Durant’s efficiency, he is also on pace to become just the second player in NBA history (Charles Barkley; 1987 88) to average 28+ points on fewer than 18 field goal attempts.

Making them Look Free: During the 2012 13 season, the Thunder not only led the NBA in free throw shooting accuracy, but OKC actually finished the year as the third best free throw shooting team in NBA history . In 82 regular season games, Oklahoma City converted at an 82.8% clip (1,819 2,196) from the charity stripe. As a point of reference, the best all time free throw shooting percentage for an entire season in NBA history is 83.2% (Boston Celtics; 1989 90) followed by the 2002 03 Mavericks who shot 82.9% from the line. In addition to the Thunder’s accuracy, Oklahoma City was effective in getting to the free throw line at a high rate. When the dust settled this past season, Oklahoma City attempted the second most free throws in the NBA (L.A. Lakers). During the Thunder’s OT win against Dallas on 1/18, Kevin Durant went a perfect 21 of 21 from the free throw line. His performance represented the second best free throw shooting effort in NBA history (Dominique Wilkins went 23 of 23 from the line in 1992. The Thunder has now led the NBA in free throw shooting in each of the past three seasons and during the 2010 11 season, OKC shot a league best 82.3% from the free throw line (5 th highest percentage in NBA history). During the 2009 10 season Durant recorded 756 free throw makes, an all time OKC Thunder franchise record and the 6 th most in NBA history for a single season. Durant’s 756 free throws made were the most for a single season since Michael Jordan recorded 833 free throw makes during the 1986 87 season. KD is the ONLY player in NBA history to convert 700+ free throws while shooting 90.0% or better.
Points Leader: With 2,280 points scored during the regular season, Kevin Durant led the Most Consecutive Scoring Titles (based on ppg) NBA in total points scored for a fourth consecutive season. Durant joins Michael Jordan Michael Jordan 7 1986-93 (11x), Wilt Chamberlain (7x), Kobe Bryant (4x) and George Gervin (4x) as the only players Wilt Chamberlain 7 1959-66 in NBA history to accomplish such a feat. During the 2012 13 season, Durant (28.1) finished behind only Carmel Anthony (28.7 ppg) in the race for the league’s scoring title (based on Kevin Durant 3 2009-12 points scored per game). During the 2009 10 season, Durant became the youngest scoring Michael Jordan 3 1995-98 champion in NBA history (21 years and 197 days). The chart to the right highlights those George Gervin 3 1977-80 players in NBA history to record three or more consecutive scoring titles. 66ers Connection: Once again this season, the Thunder’s D League affiliate, the Tulsa 66ers has been a vital part of the player development process for the Thunder franchise. During the season, five Thunder players (Reggie Jackson, Perry Jones, Jeremy Lamb, DeAndre Liggins & Daniel Orton) were assigned to the 66ers. The 66ers led the D League by receiving a total of 34 assignments during the regular season (the next closest team had 14 assignments). Under the direction of first year head coach Darko Rajakovic, the 66ers recently won six consecutive outings as the team finished the regular season with a 27 23 record. Since the Professional Basketball Club, LLC. Purchased the Tulsa 66ers in 2008, Tulsa has seen 12 different Thunder players compete in at least one game as a member of the 66ers.
Block Party: With 2012 13 regular season now in the rear view mirror, the Thunder once again became the top shot blocking team in the NBA. Led by Serge Ibaka’s 3.03 blocks per game (led the NBA), OKC averaged 7.61 blocks per game this season. After leading the league in total blocked shots for a third consecutive season, Ibaka joins Dikembe Mutombo (1994 98) as the only other player to accomplish such a feat in NBA history. During the 2011 12 season, the Thunder not only led the NBA in blocked shots (8.17 bpg), but Oklahoma City recorded the highest block per game total in the NBA in nearly 20 years. The 1993 94 Denver Nuggets team (8.37 bpg) was the last group to average more blocks than the 11 12 OKC team. During 2011 12, Ibaka led the NBA while setting an all time franchise record with a 3.65 block per game average (most blocks per game since Theo Ratliff recorded 3.74 bpg during the 2000 01 season). To put a bit more perspective on Ibaka’s accomplishment; with a total of 241 blocks during the 2011 12 season, Ibaka recorded only 19 fewer blocks than the entire New Jersey Nets team that year. During the Thunder’s game versus the Nuggets on 2/19/12, Ibaka set a franchise record by blocking 11 shots en route to his first career triple double.
OKC is Fan Friendly: As was the case in 2011 12, the Thunder once again sold out each and every home game during the 2012 13 season. The Thunder has now registered sellouts in 88 consecutive regular season home outings. Fans in attendance this year once again enjoyed the improvements made to the Chesapeake Energy Arena as part of a taxpayer funded initiative passed in March 2008. Thanks to the publically funded initiative, the team’s arena boasts a state of the art scoreboard, new terrace suites, an updated main concourse with new concession stands, a new Sunset Lounge on the Club Level and a first class courtside club. Road Warriors: With the Thunder road schedule now complete, OKC once again found success out on the road this season. After closing the year with four straight road victories, OKC posted a 26 15 record on the road this season. With a road winning percentage of .634, OKC registered the second best road mark in the NBA (Miami). Earlier this past year, the Thunder amassed a 30 point road victory on Dec. 29 at Houston (largest road win for OKC since winning by 41 at LAC on 4/15/09). During the 2011 12 season, the Thunder also found a high level of success playing away from Chesapeake Energy Arena. In 33 road games, the Thunder registered a 21 12 mark (3 rd best road record in the NBA behind Chicago and San Antonio). The Thunder was one of only THREE Western Conference teams (DEN & SA) to boast a winning road record.
Just Another Back-2-Back: During the 2012 13 season, the Thunder competed in 15 sets of back to backs. In those back to back pairings, OKC finished the year with an 11 4 record on the first night to go along with a 10 5 mark on the second night of the club’s back to back sets. On the season, Oklahoma City registered “sweeps” in seven of their back to back match ups. During the 2011 12 season, the Thunder competed in 18 sets of back to backs (in addition to the team’s lone back to back to back) while recording nine “sweeps” of those back to backs in addition to the club’s “sweep” of their only back to back to back. Oklahoma City posted a 15 4 mark on the first night and a 14 6 record on the second or third night of a back to back during the season.
Three for All: With the 2012 13 season now complete, Oklahoma City finished the year as the third best 3 point shooting team in the NBA (37.7%; 598 1,588 3FGs). Thunder players Kevin Martin (ranked 10 th in NBA; 42.6%), Thabo Sefolosha (ranked 16 th in NBA; 41.9%) and Kevin Durant (ranked 19 th in NBA; 41.6%) ranked among the top 3 point shooters in the NBA this past season. During the Thunder’s victory over the Clippers on 1/22, the Thunder set an Oklahoma City era record by converting 15 made 3 point field goals. On two occasions this season Kevin Martin registered six made 3 point field goals (one shy of the OKC era record).
Boards are the Barometer: As one might expect, Oklahoma City has traditionally found its greatest success when outrebounding the opposition. This past season, OKC went 44 8 when outrebounding the opposition (16 14 when OKC failed to outrebound opponent) and a perfect 12 0 when outrebounding the opponent by 10 or more. During the 2011 12 season, Oklahoma City went 31 5 when outrebounding the opponent (12 1 when outrebounding the opponent by 10 or more). Conversely, OKC failed to outrebound their opponent in 14 of the team’s 19 losses last season.
Dynamic Duo: With a record of 36 13 this past season when Westbrook and Durant each score 20+ points, the Thunder continues its run of success with the tandem of Durant and Westbrook leading the way. For a second consecutive season, the Durant and Westbrook duo became the highest scoring pair of teammates in the NBA (averaged 51.3 points per game). The two players combined to score a total of 51.6 points per game during the 2011 12 season to become the highest scoring duo in franchise history (surpassing their own previous record of 48.2 ppg during 2010 11). Earlier this season, the pair combined to score 77 points (Durant and Westbrook combined to score 47 of the Thunder’s 51 second half points) on 1/14, before combining to score 83 points four nights later on 1/18 against Dallas (third highest combined scoring performance for the pair). Durant and Westbrook combined to score a career best 91 points on 2/19/12 (the 91 combined points is a franchise record).
Triple Threat: In just 27 minutes of action, Kevin Durant recorded his third triple double of the season (had never registered a triple double in his career prior to the 2012 13 season) on Feb. 27 vs. New Orleans with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Russell Westbrook also recorded a triple double this season on 3/30 at Milwaukee (The Thunder is 6 0 when Westbrook records a triple double in his career).
Thunder All-Stars Shine Bright: Playing in their third and fourth All Star games, respectively, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant helped lead the Western Conference All Stars to a 143 138 victory in Houston this past year. Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30 points on 13 of 24 shooting. In his first four All Star appearances, Durant has now scored a total of 115 points (most in NBA history through a player’s first four All Star appearances). Durant also became the first player in NBA history to score 30+ points in three consecutive All Star outings. Russell Westbrook, meanwhile, registered 14 points on 7 of 13 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three assists in 18 minutes of action.
Standing Tall: In his first season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Hasheem Thabeet finished the season shooting a team best 60.4% from the field (64 106 FGs). Thabeet, the tallest player in the NBA (7’3’’), recorded his first career double double this past season after registering a career best 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds during the Thunder’s win versus Charlotte on 11/26. During the 2012 13 season, Thabeet scored in double figures on three occasions (Thabeet had accomplished such a feat three times prior in his career before the 2012 13 season).
A November to Remember: The Thunder kicked off the 2012 13 season by setting an Oklahoma City era record after compiling 13 wins in the month of November. The 13 November wins is tied for the second most in all time franchise history (the team went 14 3 in Nov. of 1996). Through the first month of the season, Oklahoma City finished tied with San Antonio for the most wins in the NBA. Meanwhile, OKC led the NBA during the month of November with nine home victories. Kevin Durant was named the NBA’s player of the month award for October/November after averaging 26.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
30 it is: For a seventh time this past season, the Oklahoma City tandem of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook each proceeded to score 30 plus points in the same game on Mar. 18 at Dallas (OKC 5 2 this season when the pair scores 30+ points). Since Durant and Westbrook began playing together during the 2008 09 season, the Thunder has posted a 19 7 record when the duo each scores 30 or more in the same game. In fact, the 26 games in which both players score 30 or more, is tops in the NBA during this span.
Awfully Good in OT: Dating back to the start of the 2010 11 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder has been incredibly successful in overtime affairs. Despite falling in OT to the Grizzlies on Mar. 20, Oklahoma City is 4 2 in overtime affairs this season and 15 5 in overtime games during the past three seasons. The 15 OT wins is the most in the NBA during this span. Last season, the Thunder started 3 0 in overtime games before falling to the L.A. Lakers in double overtime on 4/22/12. During the 2010 11 season, the Thunder became just the FIFTH team in NBA history to win eight overtime games in a single season (8 2). OKC set an all time franchise record by winning five straight overtime games to start the season and the club’s eight OT wins are the most in the NBA since 2002, when the Detroit Pistons went 8 0 in their overtime contests. During the 2010 11 season, OKC captured the franchises’ first ever triple overtime victory (12/1/10) against New Jersey (the OKC franchise was previously 0 4 all time in triple overtime games).
100 points/50 percent: Prior to the Thunder’s game vs. New Orleans on Dec. 12 in which OKC was limited to 92 points, the Thunder had scored 100 or more points in 12 consecutive games. The 12 game run of 100+ points was the longest such streak for the franchise since the 1994 95 season (scored 100+ points in 19 consecutive games). On the season, OKC posted a 50 8 record when hitting the 100 point plateau. Another impressive streak worth noting came to an end on Feb 12 at Utah. Prior to falling to the Jazz, OKC recorded a perfect 18 0 record on the season when shooting 50.0% from the floor and an impressive 43 0 when shooting 50.0% or better dating back to the 2010 11 season. The Thunder’s 43 0 streak had been the longest in the NBA. OKC finished the 2012 13 season with a record of 27 2 when shooting 50.0% or better.
