You should have received a separate mailing to reserve your spot at the tournament. If you did not, please call the TJC phone number at 271-1224. FOOTBALL KICKOFF RECEPTION SCHEDULED JULY 1 Due to scheduling conflicts, TJC's regular summer football picnic will become a reception this year to be held on Tuesday, July 1, from 5:30-8:00 pm at the Holidome. Coach Mangino will be our special guest. You'll receive more info in an upcoming mailing. SELF COMING New coach Bill Self will attend a TJC reception at an as-yet-unspecified date in the near future. Coach Self is busily attending to recruiting duties, and TJC is quite content to let him attend to business before we give him our official welcome. KU FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL PROGRAM AD LISTING TJC will again purchase a full-page ad in the KU football and basketball programs. In addition to promoting the club, we list the names of those members who pay an additional $25 to have their names listed. All money collected from the listings helps defray the $3700 cost of the ad. Please send your money today to the TJC address:P.O. Box 67694, Topeka, Kansas 66667. Mark your check "PROGRAM AD" and be sure to enclose a note telling us how you want your names listed if different than on check. If you want your business also listed on the line below your name, please enclose an additional $25 and a note telling us that. JAYHAWK FOOTBALL CAMPS SCHEDULED Jayhawk football camps scheduled for this summer include the 7 on 7 camp (for teams of 7-15 members from a school) and OL-DL (Offensive Line/Defensive Line) camps, both set for one day on Saturday, June 7. Coach Mangino's 3 day camp will be held June 8-11 for boys from 6th grade through hs junior. Satellite camps will be scheduled for one day each June 3 in Wichita and June 5 at Blue Valley in Johnson County. For further information, 785-864-3392 or http://www.kuathletics.com/football/camp/index.html WHAT WILL THE MEDIA DO TO ITSELF? Page 1 Topeka Jayhawk Club Newsletter Don't you think Coach Self is probably a little tired of all of the headlines containing puns on his name, having surely put up with it all his life? We've seen, "Happy with Self", "Self-Analysis", "Self Assured". In an interview, the Chancellor ( I don't think meaning to pun) said he was impressed with the new coach's "self-confidence." Amidst their frenzy in dumping the "Roy's Boys" items onto the clearance sale table, t-shirt vendors are taking time to create items such as "I LIKE MY NEW SELF", and the athletic department has already released "SELF-RESPECT". We can also expect "SELF- FULFILLING PROPHECY" and "SELF-DEVOTED KU FAN" and "ANOTHER SELF-CONSCIOUS JAYHAWK" and "JAYHAWKS ARE SELF-PROPELLED". K-State Collegian and Mizzou Maneater (can you believe that newspaper's name?) columnists are already making lists which they'll hope to use in the unlikely event that they are able to beat the KU basketball team--terms like Self-Destruction, Self- Immolation, Self-Flagellation, Self-Criticism and Self-Pity. The problem with Self-puns is that they're just too darned easy. This editor promises to continue in this job until the day he retires (oh wait, no one believes that kind of promise any more). This editor does promise that, unlike other media outlets, in his eternal quest for Self-improvement and in the ultimate Self-denial and in an attempt to make his readers more Self-assured, he will do his best to avoid the temptation to ever let this newsletter degenerate into any form of Self-abuse. ST PAT'S PARADE TJC CONTINGENT A BIG HIT The TJC parade contingent again had hordes clapping to the KU fight songs played by the TJC band. The band rode the bandwagon, Beverly Bernardi's girls twirled and pom- ponned, several decorated Jayhawk vehicles waved and tooted, and hundreds of Jayhawk decals were given to excited kids and adults. Diane Bean bought and gave out red and blue Mardi Gras beads--a good year for those. Baby Jay was silly-string attacked by some wayward K-State fan, but his friend gave her a can to fight back. Many thanks to Eva Davis--a Topeka resident--as Baby Jay--she's been very good to TJC. Give her an extra tip when dining at Perkins. Everyone was very excited just a few days before the team began NCAA play, but one older gent ran out onto 6th street to say, "Jayhawks aren't goin' nowhere this year." I doubt that he'll read this, but, "Sir, Nyah, Nyah, Nyah!" QUESTIONS YOUR EDITOR WISHES SOMEONE HAD ASKED: TO ROY WILLIAMS: If, as you said in your press conference, your reasons for leaving your players was "your dream, your roots and your family," then why did you admit to Jason Whitlock that you'd told the chancellor late in the season that you would probably interview with UCLA if their job was still open when the KU season ended. This editor doesn't remember any of your roots at UCLA, and last time we looked, Los Angeles is a dadgum bit further from those sick relatives than Lawrence, Kansas. TO CHANCELLOR HEMENWAY: And when he told you he would probably interview with UCLA, why didn't you do something about it? AND TO DEAN SMITH: If you were going to make another play for Roy, why did Doherty's firing have to be announced 4 days BEFORE your alma mater played in the Final Four? Couldn't it have waited a week? Don't you think the distraction might have been worth a couple free throws? WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING Chris Shank, a Kansas State Collegian (KSU student paper) columnist: "Monday was a very good night. Not only did I get to witness the University of Kansas lose the national championship, but I also got to see Roy Williams lose his composure on live national television. I'll make this very clear: I hate Roy Williams and KU. ....Roy Williams has been the media's golden child since he arrived at KU. .... Granted, Coach Bill Snyder gets some coverage every now and then, but it pales in comparison to the media's love of Roy. ....With K-State's recruiting class -- ranked No. 1 by some national recruiting circles -- Page 2 Topeka Jayhawk Club Newsletter coming to a basketball court near you soon, KU fans know Wooldridge's Cats are getting better. Along with Collison, Hinrich and possibly Williams gone, the state's basketball spotlight could move back to its rightful place -- in Manhattan." (Editorial comment: Poor guy must be looking at the world through lavender-tinted glasses.) SCHOLAR ATHLETES Nick Collison and Gwen Haley, swimming, were named Jayhawk Scholars at the recent banquet honoring scholar-athletes. Eight KU athletes were nominated for the Senior Scholar Award. In addition to Collison and Haley, nominated were Anson Jackson, track, Jake Letourneau, football, Casey Spanish, baseball, Pardis Brown, soccer, Kim Lorenz, tennis and Kylie Thomas, volleyball. BEAKS & TAILS Lost in yet another day of Roy stories, a significant highlight of this year's basketball awards ceremony was the attendance of KU great Bill Bridges who presented to Nick Collison the Bill Bridges rebounding award. After leaving KU, Bridges played two seasons for the Kansas City Steers of the old ABL, then 13 seasons in the NBA. Although not known as a scorer, Bridges led the ABL in scoring one year with an average of 29.2 points a game. During his NBA career from 1962 to 1975, he averaged 11.9 points and 11.9 rebounds a game. Bridges joked that he thought he ought to show up to present the award just to make sure his name isn't taken off next year in favor of Collison's. Men's basketball camps will go on as scheduled on June 15-19 and 22-26. All camps are currently full. For further info, www.kuathletics.com. A scholarship for American Indians who want to become teachers has been set up at KU in honor of former KU track great Billy Mills. The scholarship is funded by "Running Strong for American Indian Youth." Mills is a 1962 KU education graduate. The KU men's golf team has qualified for the central regional NCAA tournament to be held May 15- 17 in Manhattan. The NCAA is considering a rule change to move back the 3-point line nine inches. Found in the Journal-World--Spotted playing Alvamar in Lawrence May 3 were Iowa State Assoc Coach Terry Allen and North Carolina Coach Roy Williams. ???????????? Iraq's "Mrs. Anthrax", Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash, accused head of the biological warfare effort, is a 1983 graduate of MIZZOU...in microbiology. KU basketball player Brett Olson is graduating with a perfect 4.0 gpa. In addition to playing basketball he spent the season as a full-time intern in the applied physiology lab. During the recent coach change hullabaloo, your editor discovered that the best source for up-to-date KU sports news is the Lawrence Journal-World online.

PRO BASKETBALL Photographs by GREG NELSON Kicking It Up a Notch Showing he’s more than a scoring machine, Kevin Durant has the young Thunder rolling toward the playoffs| BY CHRIS BALLARD n most mornings Kevin Durant, the best NBA player most people never get to see, drives his extralong con- version van 10 minutes from his house in the suburbs of Oklahoma City to the Thunder’s practice facility, which if not technically in the middle of nowhere is at least on its outskirts. He passes sagging power lines and idle oil derricks and vast fields of brittle yellow grass pocked with snow before turning onto a two-lane road and, just past the John Deere Ofactory, pulling into the parking lot of the practice center, a converted roller rink. Unfolding his 6' 9" frame from the van, Durant ambles past the odd rabbit lounging in the shrubbery and enters the gym for another day of work, all the while engulfed by the scent of . well, what is that exactly? “Dog food,” says Durant. “And it stinks, man; it really stinks.” As it turns out, there is a hulking Purina plant just down the road, churning out untold tons of pet chow weekly, but Durant takes the, um, ambience in stride, just as he does many other not- so-glamorous elements of playing in the smallest market in the NBA. These include the weather (cold), the nightlife (hello, Denny’s!) and the TV exposure (two national appearances this season, or 27 fewer than the Cavaliers), all of which are supposed to be of great importance to NBA players, who are commonly TALKING POINTS envisioned as a flock of 7-foot homing pigeons all hatched in Durant had scored 30 or the same sweaty South Beach nightclub.
