Makalah ini berjudul “The Metaphor Found in Ariana Grande‟s My Everything

Album” ini membagas tentang metafora yg ada pada lirik-lirik lagu Album “My

Everything”. Dalam makalah ini, penulis menerapkan pencarian internet yaitu dengan mengumpulkan data metafora. kemudian menganalisinya dan menentukan jenis metafora yg paling dominan.

Pembagian metafora pada makalah ini mengacu pada pendapat Crowther yang membagi metafora menjadi simile, hiperbola dan personifikasi. Dalam lirik-lirik lagu Album “My Everything”, penulis menemukan 23 metafora yang terdiri dari of 5 data simiel (21,7%), 10 hiperbola (56,5%), and 5 data personifikasi (21,7%).

This research is entitled “The Metaphor Found in Ariana Grande‟s My Everything

Album” discusses about metaphor found in Ariana Grande‟s My Everything

Album. In this research, the writer used internet research method by collected metaphor data then analysed and determinded the most dominant.

This study uses the theory of Crowther who classified metaphor into simile, hyperbole, and personification. In these lyrics of “My Everything” Album, the writer found 23 metaphor consist of 5 data in the form simile (21,7%), 10 data in the form hyperbole (56,5%), and 5 data in the form of personification (21,7%).

1.1 Background of the Study

Language is the principle means of human being to communicate with each other. People use language to express ideas, feelings and to build relationship with other people. By using language, we can describe our feelings, emotions and thought easier to using other elements. We cannot respond or react if we do not understand what other people say, write or signal.

Communication can be built if there is an understanding between speaker and the hearer in other word, the source person and target person. The main aim is to indicate something or some relations or even some ideas, and it can be called as its meaning.

Sometimes we are not sure about message we should get from something we read, or we hear because there are many speakers or writers do not mean what their words mean but they mean something different from their utterance. This can cause misunderstanding between the speaker and the listener, or between the writer and the reader. That is why it is very important to study the analysis of meaning. In the case, meaning is important and significant.

Meaning can be studied through scientific study of language called

Linguistics. Linguistics, as we know, has four main branches of study: phonology, morphology, syntax, and metaphor. In this paper writer focus on metaphor..

For this paper, the writer tries to reveal metaphor as an object to analyze because the writer thinks it is worthy in academic field. Metaphor is the use of widening meaning. Metaphor derives from Greek word “meta” which mean over

1 1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA and “porcini” which mean to carry, metaphor simply means to carry from one place to another. Metaphor is one part of figurative language which is the most common and widely used. It is an implicit comparison in which the intended idea is compared with another idea through a similarity or likeness of characteristic, qualities or attributes between the two ideas.

Crowther (1995:74) says, “Metaphor is the imaginative use of word or phrase to describe something as another object in order to show that they have the same qualities and to make the description more forceful.” It is also means that metaphor is used to describe normal words in order to help others understand or enjoy the message within. Based on the two things being compared and viewed in terms of figurative language, metaphor divided into nine types i.e. simile, personification, synecdoche, hyperbole, allusion, analogy, allegory, antithesis and metonymy.

In literature, metaphor as one of elements does not merely convey ideas, in addition it also functions as a tool for literary writers to embellish and give colors to their works. There are some kinds of literary works, which use metaphor. Some of them are novels, song lyrics, poetry, etc. All of them use it to beautify their sentences and give the magnificent words to interest the reader or hearer.

In this paper, the writer will try to explaint the conceptual metaphor in the

Ariana Grande album “My Everything”

1.2 Problems of the Study

The problem of the study can be defined as below:

1. What types of metaphors are used in My Everything album?

1.3 Objective of the Study

There are three objectives which are expected to achieve from the analys.

Those are:

1. To find out the type of metaphor that used in six songs and two bonus of

Ariana Grande’s My Everything album.

2. To analyze the meaning‟s of six songs and two bonus of Ariana Grande’s

My Everything album.

3. To find out the most dominant type of metaphor found in six songs and

two bonus selected of Ariana Grande’s My Everything album.

1.4 Scope of the Study

There are many types of metaphors found in this songs. The study of this paper is focused on metaphors in types of simile, hyperbole, and personification and their meanings found in My Everything album. In this album there are 12 songs and 8 bonus. But the writer choose 6 songs and 2 bonus as object analysis.

1.5 Method of the Study

This paper is the result of internet research because the main data is obtained from the Album Ariana Grande “My Everything”. Descriptive method will be used to analyzing the data.

After this paper complete, the writer hopes this paper give advantageous:

1. Practically, the study contributes to English Students their English

Studying process, and it gives additional knowledge to English Student.

2. Theoretically, this study adds the literature in linguistic about metaphor

kind of figurative language.

3. Enrich the people knowledge in understanding the metaphor, especially

people who interested in this subject.

2.1 Definition of Metaphors

Metaphor is a kind of figures of speech, or something that is used to describe normal words in order to help others understand or enjoy the message within.

Tarigan (1995:121) says, “that metaphor is a rhetorical trope where a comparison is made between two seemingly unrelated subjects.” Metaphor comes from the Greek word metaphoric, meaning 'to transfer'. Metaphor is a rhetorical trope where a comparison is made between two seemingly unrelated subjects.

Typically, a first object is described as being a second object. In this way, the first object can be economically described because implicit and explicit attributes from the second object can be used to fill in the description of the first. More simply, this means using one thing to describe another thing (a 'rhetorical trope', by the way, means 'using words where their meaning is changed', also known as a 'figure of speech').

Lakoff & Johnson (1979:3) say, “Metaphor is for most people a device of the poetic imagination and the rhetorical flourish, a matter of extraordinary rather than ordinary language. The essence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another”.

Metaphors used to help us understand the unknown, because we use what we know in comparison with something we do not know to get a better understanding of the unknown. For example: Our love‟s burning down. In this

5 5 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA sentence, love compared with burning down. Burning down means fire. Love is not same with fire. So, in sentence our love‟s burning down, love is equated with waste that can be burn or something else like that.

2.2 Classification of Metaphor

Goatly (1997:126) says that there are eight classification of metaphor as in following:

(1) Active metaphor an active metaphor has close relationship between the main subject and modifier. It depends on the interaction of the vehicle and the particular topic, which are being referred to, and their grounds will consequently be variable according to the text.

E.g. you are my sunshine

Here, my sunshine modifies the main subject you. But have close relationship in between.

(2) Inactive metaphor or Dead Metaphor Inactive metaphor is referred to directly through a conventional and fixed meaning of v-term and vehicle is available, but ill wired in parallel under normal processing, otherwise the topic concept so predictable.

E.g. red substitutes the bravery and strength

Here, the bravery and strength modifies the main subject red. The topic red refers to conventional meaning of the vehicle the bravery and strength.

(3) Subjective Metaphor Subjective metaphor is the description of metaphor because the speaker has the different ideological or physical view of the word

E.g. you are child to me

Here, child modifies the main subject „you‟

(4) Mimetic Metaphor This metaphor extends to nonverbal expression straying beyond linguistic text into visual aid plastic art. It demands the reader to imagine a word in which the assertions or descriptions are literally true.

E.g. the stars had a smile on the sky

Here, a smile modifies the main subject the stars

(5) Phenomenalistic Metaphor is the use of language to refer to the real language, and in this case referring to an imaginary world. Its construal one must realize does simply apply to the portion of fictional texts that are anomalous in some way local metaphor. If the text is fictional then it will be consistently referring to an imaginary world.

E.g. Lord of the flies as a reaction to the coral island.

Here, lord of the flies modifies the main subject a „reaction‟

(6) Precision Metaphor it is the process or quality that is made more precise by being related through modification, to a specific first order identity.

E.g. my cry for help was the cry of the rat when a terrier shakes it

Here, the cry of the rat modifies the main subject, my cry for help

(7) Symbolism Metaphor it is a particular kind of substitution of the interpretation.

E.g. do not count your chicken before they are hatched

(8) Approximate Metaphor Approximate metaphor is a kind of metaphor that uses the approximate number or expression to describe an action or thing.

E.g. He puts in face in the water and half gulped, half eat it

2.3 The Purposes of Metaphor

The general purpose of metaphor is to state relationships between things or categories of object by using our ideas about these items. Metaphor reminds us that practically everything has a relationship,m a similarity with everything else, whether vegetable, mechanical, human, mineral, virtual, or whatever.

For example: the most famous marble metaphor, “the earth is a big blue marble”.

These are several advantages of using metaphor. The first, and more practical, function is to allow the reader greater understanding of the concept, object, or character being described. This is done by comparing it to an item that may be more familiar to the reader. The second function is purely artistic: to create an image that is beautiful or profound or otherwise produces the effect that the writer desires. For these reasons, writers have used the metaphor since the earliest recorded stories. The term metaphor is used broadly in this sense to describe any instance when something is figuratively compared to something else. This includes the simile, which compares things by using words such as like or as. In contrast, the metaphor in its usual meaning dispenses with such words, describing something by calling it another thing, other metaphorical figures of speech include metonymy, using a single word to represent a complicated idea; for example, the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA word Hollywood is often used to describe the film industry. The metaphor in literature serves to make writing more accessible and colorful at the same time.

From the above arguments, explanations and examples, we can easily infer the function of metaphors; both in our daily lives and in a piece of literature.

Using appropriate metaphors appeals directly to the senses of listeners or readers, sharpening their imaginations to comprehend what is being communicated to them. Moreover, it gives a life-like quality to our conversations and to the characters of the fiction or poetry. Metaphors are also ways of thinking, offering the listeners and the readers fresh ways of examining ideas and viewing the world.

Similes

Simile is a kind of figurative speech comparing two essentially unlike things and often introduced by like or as

For example: He is as brave as a lion

My face as white as snow

Her beauty is like a blooming rose

In the first sentence his braveness is compared to a lion, since everybody knows that lion is a strong and brave animal. In the second sentence, my face as white as snow, the face is compare to snow which indicated “I look so place like snow in my sickness”. The last sentence, beauty is compared to a blooming rose.

As we know that, a rose is very beautiful when it is blooming. So, the beauty of the blooming rose is compared to her beauty

Hyperbole is a kind of non-literal meaning that often used where someone want to emphasize something like “I have told you a thousand times”. The words

Hyperbole itself derived from Greek. It is from two words, hyper means over and ballein means to throw.

Hyperbole is indicated as a way of describing something in order to make it sound bigger, smaller, better, worse.

Example of Hyperbole. From the definition above, hyperbole can be defined as a figurative expression, which exaggerates the number, size, or quality of something in order to emphasize certain points in a statement. Another example of hyperbole is “I miss you like crazy” here it does not really become crazy person but the strong feeling of miss someone or it may mean “I miss you so much”.

Personification

Personification is a figure of speech in which abstractions, animals, ideas, and inanimate objects are having human form, character, traits or sensibilities.

Personification can be defined as the attribution of human characteristics to either non-human objects or abstraction, in other word; personification is the figure of speech in which s thing, an animal, or an abstract term (truth, nature) is characteristics are attached to the objects themselves.

Personification is the arbitrary of human qualities to an inanimate object.

Personification can be recognized when the figure that endows animals, ideals, abstraction and inanimate object with human form. The representing of the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA imaginary creatures or things as having human personalities, intelligence, and emotion. In simple words, personification occurs when an inanimate object are personified with human form.

For example: “the wind speaks in whisper” it is already known that “speaks” in the characteristics of human, and to be able to speak, it needs the articulator organ to make it possible which the wind does not have. Therefore, the characteristic is given to personify the inanimate object.

Another example of the used personification is “My heart was asleep” The word “asleep” as used to express human‟s personal qualities. In this sentence, means a condition that someone has not feeling.

3.1 Simile

A simile is a figure of speech that says that one thing is like another different thing. In six songs and two bonus songs that I take from Ariana

Grande‟s My Everything album, I found 5 similes. I found that in “ Love Me

Harder”, “Why Try” and “Best Mistake”.

They are :

1. I‟ll make it feel like the first time (Love Me Harder )

2. We been living like angels and devils ( Why Try )

3. We been loving like angels and devils (Why Try )

4. And stop acting like were blind (Best Mistake )

5. Hold on, hold love, I know love can be a beach with no shore (Best

Mistake)

Hyperbole is the use of obvious and deliberate exaggeration. In six songs and two bonus songs that I take from Ariana Grande‟s My Everything album, I found 13 hyperbole. I found that in “ Love Me Harder”, “Break Your Heart Righ

Back”, “My Everything”, “One Last Time”, “ Cadillac Song” and “Best Mistake”.

They are :

1. You gotta got to love me harder ( Love Me Harder)

2. You had me goin‟ blind (Break Your Heart Right Back)

3. I know you mad „cause I found out ( Break Your Heart Right Back)

4. Runin‟ round town telling everybody (Break Your Heart Right Back)

5. I cried enough tears to see my own reflection in them (My Everything)

6. You my everything ( My Everything )

7. Cause if the water dries up (Best Mistake)

8. And the moon stop shining (Best Mistake)

9. Stars fall and the world goes blind (Best Mistake)

10. Couple only human except you, you a goddess (Best Mistake)

3.3 Personification

Personification is giving human qualities to non human things. In six songs and two bonus songs that I take from Ariana Grande‟s My Everything album, I found 5 personification. I found that in “ Love Me Harder”, “Why Try”,

“ Break Your Heart Right Back” and “Only 1”.

1. Then take this pleasure and take away the paint (Love Me Harder)

2. Want you to cry me a river (Break Your heart Right Back)

3. The flow so gross, my nick name school lunch (Break Your Heart Right

Back)

4. Realize we were not in the same boat (Why Try)

5. I know all the competition that after you (Only 1)

There are 23 data found in Ariana Grande’s My Everything album. Below is the number of data in each type of metaphor:

1) Simile 5 Data

2) Hyperbole 13 Data

3) Personification 5 Data

Could be reported by using couvery‟s (2003:196) formula

N= x / y x 100

Where :

N= Percentage of the type of metaphor

X= The total number of data found in each type of metaphor

Y= The total number of the whole data of metaphor

Here is the percentage of each type of metaphor:

1) Simile – 5/23x100 = 21,7%

2) Hyperbole – 13/23x100 = 56,5%

3) Personification – 5/23x100 = 21,7%

4.1 Conclusion

Conclusion of the paper about metaphor. Metaphor is a kind of teaching to know the concept of reality and common in novels, poetry, and conversation. There are also many metaphors in the lysrics of the song. After analyzing and calculating all the data of metaphor in Ariana Grande’s My Everything album, one of the writer find some metaphor of Ariana Grande‟s song lyrics. There are found 23 data.

There are found 5 data in the form of simile, 10 data in the form pf hyperbole, and

5 data in the form of personification. The use of simile is Twenty one point seven percent (21,7%), hyperbole is fifty six point five percent (56,5%), and personification is twenty one point seven percent (21,7%).

4.2 Suggestion

Metaphor are well known as a stylistic feature of literature, but in fact are found in almost all language use, other than simple explanations of physical events in the material world. In daily life we need some figures of speech in words. Their role to beautify the language. Metaphors can make ordinary language into a beautiful language. The writer would like to suggest reviews those who are interested in literature may look at the metaphor to be analyzed Many people do not know what it is metaphor. So that those who do not know metaphor in the song lysrics considers not reasonable.
