The ecosystem of the slopes of Mount Merapi is mountain tropical forest which is frequently affected by volcanic activities. The dynamics of the volcano affect the diversity and abundance of orchids in the ecosystem. Tritis is an area included in the Turgo Hill of the southern slope of Mount Merapi and is under the management of Mount Merapi National Park. The ecosystem in Tritis area classified as lower mountain forest and it has been affected by Mount Merapi eruption. This study aimed to do an inventory of orchid species in Tritis to know the diversity and abundance of orchids that exist in this area. -

Phytochemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of Satureja Montana L. and Satureja Cuneifolia Ten. Essential Oils

Croat. 64 (2), 313–322, 2005 CODEN: ABCRA25 ISSN 0365–0588 Phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Satureja montana L. and Satureja cuneifolia Ten. essential oils NADA BEZI]*, MIRJANA SKO^IBU[I],VALERIJA DUNKI] Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Education, University of Split, Teslina12, 21000 Split, Croatia The phytochemical composition and the antibacterial activity of the essential oils ob- tained from the aerial parts of two Lamiaceae species, winter savory (Satureja montana L.) and wild savory (Satureja cuneifolia Ten.) were evaluated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the isolated oils resulted in the identification of twenty compounds in the oil of S. montana representing 97% of the total oil and 25 compounds of S. cuneifolia, representing 80% of the total oil. Carvacrol was the major constituent of the S. montana oil (45.7%). Other important compounds were the monoterpenic hydrocar- bons p-cymene, g-terpinene and the oxygenated compounds carvacrol methyl ether, borneol and thymol. Conversely, the oil of S. cuneifolia contained a low percentage of carvacrol and thymol. The major constituents of wild savory oil were sesquiterpenes b-cubebene (8.7%), spathulenol, b-caryophyllene, followed by the monoterpenic hydro- carbons limonene and a-pinene. The screening of the antimicrobial activities of essential oils were individually evalated against nine microorganisms, using a disc diffusion metod. The oil of S. montana exhibited greater antimicrobial activity than the oil of wild savory. Maximum activity of winter savory oil was observed against Escherichia coli, the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and against yeast (Candida albicans). -

Phytochemicals are bioactive compounds found in vegetables, fruits, cereal grains, and plant- based beverages such as tea and wine. Phytochemical consumption is associated with a decrease in risk of several types of chronic diseases due to in part to their antioxidant and free radical scavenging effects.1 Recent research has also highlighted their potential role in improved endothelial function and increased vascular blood flow.2 What are the various types of phytochemicals? About 10,000 different phytochemicals have been identified, and many still remain unknown.1 Based on their chemical structure, phytochemicals can be broken into the following groups3, as shown below in Figure 1. Phytochemicals Phenolic Acids Flavonoids Stilbenes/Lignans Anthocyanins, Flavones, Flavanones, Flavonols Flavanols Isoflavones Catechins and Epicatechins Proanthocyanidins Procyanidins Prodelphinidins Figure 1: Types of Phytochemicals What are flavonoids and why are they of particular interest? Flavonoids make up the largest class of phytochemicals.2 In general, flavonoids can play an important role in decreasing disease risk through various physiologic mechanisms. Some of these include antiviral, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects.4 Mechanisms responsible for improvements in heart disease risk include improved endothelial function, decreased blood pressure, and improvements in lipid and insulin resistance.5 Flavonoids can be divided into the following subclasses flavonols, flavanones, flavones, flavan-3-ols, and flavanonols.6 Certain clinical studies have documented relationships between flavonoid consumption and decreased cancer risk. -

Roscoea purpurea Smith Fam. Zingiberaceae Ayurvedic name Kakoli Hindi name Kakoli Trade name -------- Parts used Fasciculated Tuberous Roots Roscoea purpurea Morphological Characteristics t is a terrestrial, herbaceous and tuberous perennial herb. Root is thick, fleshy and Ifasciculated. Stem is leafy, elongate, leaves 5-6, lanceolate. Flowers are few in a sessile spike borne in autumn and pale-lilac, purple or white in colour. Floral Characteristics Flowers are few in a sessile spike, pale lilac or white. Floral bracts are oblong, hidden in the sheaths of the upper leaves. Calyx is green and slit deeply down one side of the flower expand. Corolla tube is dilated upwards, lip 2-3 lobed; upper segment is ovate and lower lanceolate. The staminode is oblanceolate in shape, half as long as the upper segment; whereas fertile stamen is as long as the staminode. Capsule is cylindrical and varies greatly in size. Distribution The plant is distributed from an elevation of 1500-2500 meter in Himalayan region and Khasi hills. Climate and Soil The plant grows in moist shady places over sandy-loam soils rich in humus. Soils having 84 Roscoea purpurea Smith adequate percentage (50%) of sand has good porosity for tuber growth. It grows best in areas, which receive moderate to high rainfall and at elevation ranging from 1500-2500 meter, preferably over north slopes. Other sites with mild slope have also been found good especially, where there is a good summer rainfall. The locations, where the rainfall is scanty, but more or less flat area is preferred for cultivation, so that it can be irrigated as and when required. -

In spite of the plethora of water resources, the people of the state are facing the problem of safe fresh water due to slope factor, management issues, urban conglomeration, deforestation and other environmental factors as discussed in the article. Besides this, an integrated approach considering the national water policy in state context is urgently required in difficult topographic and changing climatic conditions. The present article highlights the hydrogeology of the state, sustainable water resources including traditional water resources, drinking water supply system in state, Uttaranchal Koop, bank filtration technology. Furthermore, various suggestions are also incorporated for the fortification of water resources of the state. It is similar in size and overall floral morphology to Malaxis cipoensis, a species endemic to upland rocky fields on the Espinhaço range in Southeastern Brazil, which is its closest relative according to a cladistics analysis of nuclear (ITS) and plastid (matK) DNA sequences presented here. However, M. irmae is distinguished from M. cipoensis by inhabiting lowland marshy grasslands, possessing 3−5 long-petiolate leaves per shoot (vs. 2 shortly petiolate leaves), cy- lindrical raceme (vs. corymbose), pale green flowers (vs. green-orange flowers) and less prominent basal labellum lobules.
