Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Requirements Candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree will meet the following requirements: 1. Completion of a minimum of 138 semester hours; 42 hours must be advanced; 24 advanced hours must be completed at UNT. 2. Major of at least 63 hours of art in a prescribed field; 36 hours must be completed at UNT. 3. Minor of a minimum of 18 hours (including at least 6 advanced) from a field outside the School of Visual Arts. Minors are chosen with faculty advisers for selected majors. For some majors, the minor is specified. 4. Completion of the requirements for the bachelor’s degree listed in the Academics section of this catalog, including University Core Curriculum requirements outlined in this section. Two hours (maximum) of wellness courses will count toward the degree. 5. A 2.5 grade point average must be maintained in all art courses; only a grade of C or better in art courses will count toward degree requirements. 6. Transfer course work substituted for required UNT art courses must be approved by a student’s faculty adviser during the degree plan process. One of the casualties of this change was the recital recording, in which an artist or ensemble would present an interesting arrangement of musical pieces that followed a certain theme or style—much like a live concert. Although recital recordings were of course made, and are perhaps making a comeback, most recordings featured a single composer and were sold in alphabetized bins: B for Bach; V for Vivaldi. -

Arabic script and typography is alphabetical; the direction of writing is from right to left; within a word, most letters form connected groups. AOne expects an alphabet to consist of a few dozen letters repre- senting one unique sound each. The Arabic alphabet evolved somewhat away from this ideal: although most letters correspond to a sound, a few letters are ambivalent between two or more sounds. Some letters don’t represent sound at all: they have only a grammatical function. For modern office use there are 28 basic letters, eight of them only differentiated from other letters by diacritics, and six optional letters for representing vowels. Older spellings made less use of diacritics for dif- ferentiating; on the other hand, to facilitate Qur’an recitation, additional vowel signs occur, along with elaborate cantillation marks. To acknowl- edge slight variations of the received text, some Qur’an editions have ad- ditional diacritics, discretely adding or eliminating consonant letters. As the Arabic script evolved into a connected script, it developed an elaborate system of assimilations and dissimilations between adjacent letters. Outside a small group of connoisseurs and calligraphers who study the principles established by the Ottoman letter artists, surpris- ingly little is understood of the efficiency and subtlety of this system,¹ and modern industrial type designs follow the approach found in el- ementary Western teaching materials.² There, beginners in Arabic script are given a maximally simplified scheme. While simplification is totally sound from a pedagogical perspective, it provides too narrow a basis for the development of professional typography. The Arabic script stems from the same source as the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew writing systems: Phoenician (figure 1).³ The underlying proto- alphabet had some two dozen characters; there were no vowels. -

It introduces the way that information designers work, particularly in relation to what have been called ‘functional texts’ – those that enable people to take some kind of action, or to better understand something. Abstract: The text management in map design is a topic generally linked to placement and composition issues. Whereas the type design issue is rarely addressed or at least only partially. Moreover the typefaces especially designed for maps are rare. This paper presents a protocol of tests to evaluate characters for digital topographic maps and fonts that were designed for the screen through the use of geographical information systems using this protocol. It was launched by the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique Research (ANRT, located in Nancy, France) and took place over his ‘post-master’ course in 2013. The purpose is to isolate different issues inherent to text in a topographic map: map background, nonlinear text placement and toponymic hierarchies.
