Baijal will succeed Najeeb Jung, who resigned from the post of Delhi LG on 22 December 2016. Jung had resigned 18 months short of his tenure.

• ISRO successfully launched record 104 satellites including Cartosat-2 in single mission • Meghalaya to host 2022 National Games

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the meeting that held in Chennai on 27 December 2016 announced Meghalaya's bid to host the National Games overshadowing four other bidders, which were Chhattisgargh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

• Samit Gohel broke 117-year-old first-class cricket record • RBI appointed Viral V Acharya as Deputy Governor.

Before getting appointed as Deputy Governor of RBI, he was serving at the New York University Stern School of Business as the CV Starr Professor of Economics.

He sketched the National Emblem and extracted its motto 'Satyameva Jayate' from Mundaka Upanishad in 1948 after an extensive research.

The approximate investment for setting up of the refinery is Rs 600 crores.  The project will be set-up by the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).

Rama Mohana Rao was sacked following an IT raid at his residence.

• US Electoral College formally Donald Trump elected as elected President

Six weeks after winning the polls, the Republican Candidate Trump was able to secure the 270 votes needed to formalise his victory. While the result will be officially announced on 6 January 2017 in a special joint session of Congress, he will assume the office on 20 January 2017.

• Researchers said Zika-linked birth defects to be more serious than previously thought.

It is associated with fetal growth restriction, fetal death and a spectrum of central nervous system abnormalities during pregnancy.

• 163 new species discovered in the region of Greater Mekong

Among the 163 new species that were found in the region some species such as a dragon-like lizard, a rainbow-headed snake and a newt that looks like a Klingon from Star Trek were also found.

• Justice J S Khehar appointed as 44th Chief Justice of India • 1st country to legally approve 3-parent technique is UK

In this technique (DNA) Deoxyribonucleic acid from three parents are involved that allows parents to have healthy babies who suffer from genetic mutations. This is done by replacing faulty mitochondrial DNA (mDNA) of mother with another woman's mDNA.
