May 3, 2021 IT’S OUR BUSINESS TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS DO BUSINESS GROWTH CRITICAL ‘Get the economy growing again’

GOVERNOR of the Central Bank of Barbados, Cleviston Haynes said growth must be restored to the Barbados economy in order for the country to lower its increasing debt to GDP ratio of 153 per cent. Haynes said that the increase in the ratio from 117 per cent this time last year to the 153 per cent at March this year is not really driven by the debt the country incurred. Rather, he told the media, that the size of the country’s economy had shrunk. Haynes said the truth is that while Government has borrowed over the past year the increase in the debt to GDP ratio is as a result of a decline in economic growth. The increase in the size of the debt is about $500 million in loans. “So what we have to be able to do in order to bring these numbers back in line is to get the economy growing again,” the Governor said during his review of the economy for the period January to March this year. “That really is critical,” the Central Bank of Barbados official said. In those three months of this year, economic output in Barbados dropped 19.8 per cent, compared to about three per cent in the same period last year. For the whole of 2020 the economy here also declined 18.9 per cent, making Barbados one of the worst economic performers in the Caribbean as COVID- 19 took hold.
