I1 so from a very early age I1 was aware of china and things chinese in iggi1961 at modesto junior college I1 met two international students from hong kong and was fascinated by their culture when I1 heard a young man from our stake speak about his mission in hong kong I1 said to myself that s where I1 would like to go when I1 applied for a mission I1 was interviewed by a general authority who asked would you be willing to serve overseas and learn a foreign language I1 replied yes he then asked which lan- guage when I1 answered chinese he started making notes I1 was thrilled to be called to the southern far east mission and serve in taiwan from 1962 to 1965 fig i near the end of my mission I1 met my sister in law s uncle an anthro- popologistlogist doing research in taiwan A few chats with him helped me realize that I1 could have a career that would combine my love of history with my fascination for different cultures especially the cultures of china so I1 stud- ied anthropology with a specialization in chinese archaeology I1 returned to taiwan in 1972 for doctoral dissertation research and again in 1977 for postdoctoralpost doctoral research I1 then settled into the happy life of an american academic teaching publishing and making occasional trips to china an important part of my work involves teaching people to understand for eign cultures to make connections across cultural gaps and to study cul- tures as living changing entities in 1994199411 was called to serve as the president of the taiwan taipei mis- sion of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints president tized in miao taiwan li in addition to carrying the usual duties of a mission president I1 was responsible for keeping a history ofthe development of the church in our mission A notable event in that history is the 1996 celebra- tion of the fortieth anniversary fig 2 of the arrival in june 1956 ofthe first four mormon missionaries on taiwan through discussions held as part of that anniversary I1 gained insight into the cultural impact the church and specifically the missionaries has had on taiwan this essay attempts to record my impressions of those conversations and to formulate a few ideas about the cultural impact of latter day saint missionaries on taiwan in the latter half of the twentieth century while my experience deals exclusively with the island nation of taiwan such cultural impacts apply to virtually anyplace where missionaries serve the impact of mormon missionary activity on iwanstaiwanstaiwaifstaiwanaTa society in the years since 1956 more than four thousand missionaries have served on taiwan by 1996 local church membership numbered twenty two thousand in a nation of twenty one mifmillionllonlionwhile I1 recognize that any influence the for the preaching of the gospel in 1956 modest as an anthropologist I1 see innumerable cross cultural connec- tions connections that seem minute on a national level but are significant on a personal level and provide a beginning study of cultural impact contributing to the economy when the first mormon missionaries arrived on taiwan in 1956 the country was still recovering from the impact of world war II11 and the chinese civil war taiwan was still under martial law hard currency from american missionaries helped the developing economy the missionaries who have served since then have spent money for eighteen to thirty six months supporting the nation s growing middle class the modest monthly living expenses of the individual missionaries 1 multiplied by four thousand add up to a substantial dollar amount the church also spent funds to rent meeting places and office space to hire local caretakers for church buildings and to print books and pam- phlets moreover the money invested by the church and the missionaries did not go into the military or government programs but instead con- tributedtributed in a practical way to the development of the taiwanese middle class figs 3 4 compared to the GNP the amount was minuscule but to the developing middle class it made a difference making connections and friendships the mormon missionaries who came from abroad were often the first foreigners that some taiwanese people met the young threateningnonnonthreatening missionaries gave the taiwanese the oppor- tunity to meet talk with ask questions of and get to know non during my first mission I1 saw the many US military men who came to taiwan on R and R from vietnam spending much of their time and money in the red light districts near the military bases which did not leave a good impression with the conservative taiwanese while the sol- diers raced around in their jeeps and taxis the missionaries pedaled their bicycles like most of the locals fig 5 today while the locals drive cars and shootersscootersscooters the missionaries are still on bikes most taiwanese recognize the missionaries and admire them for the sacrifice they make to serve missions I1 remember riding a local train and having a buddhist woman tell me how much she admired and respected the young missionaries who were mak- ing a sacrifice to serve the people of taiwan it is easy to underestimate the importance of personal contacts between people yet it is just these simple acts that change attitudes and build positive associations I1 tried to take every opportunity during my missions to make personal connections for example I1 accepted innumer- able requests for interviews by taiwanese high school students writing themes for their english classes and of course the missionaries spent a good deal of their time building relationships As a result ofthose ties mission- aries are invited to people s homes not only for church related meetings but FIG 5 elders richard     MEETING OF MINDS XIX May 13, 2011 This is the nineteenth annual Meeting of Minds gathering. The purpose of this meeting is to highlight the accomplishments of undergraduate stu- dents and their interactions with faculty members from represented uni- versities. Each year the meeting is held on the campus of one of the participating universities. This year, Oakland University will host 184 oral and poster presentations. The sessions will be held in the Oakland Center (OC) and in South Foundation Hall (SFH). Oral presentations are grouped into four time slots with multiple sessions at each time. There will be morning and afternoon poster sessions held across from Café O’Bears in the Oakland Center. All presentation details can be found in the program. In addition, an alphabetical index of stu- dent presenters is included at the back of the program. Faculty sponsor names are in- cluded with the abstracts in the program. MEETING OF MINDS XIX Oakland University was created in 1957, when the late Alfred G. and Matilda R. Wilson donated their 1,444-acre estate and $2 million to Michigan State University for a new col- lege in Oakland County. In 1970, OU became an independent campus and is now a com- prehensive state-assisted institution with over 19,000 students. Anchored by a strong lib- eral arts program, the university is organized into the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Education and Human Services, School of Engineer- ing and Computer Science, School of Health Science, School of Nursing and the Oakland University – William Beaumont School of Medicine.

    Contributors Ashley Cerku is a junior in the Department of English and Writ­ ing/Rhetoric at Oakland University. Her inspiration comes from the many things that are overlooked in life, including objects, places, emotions and people. She resurrected the Student Writers Group at OU, after it disbanded in 2005, and is currently the President. She helped release the group’s third edition of Swallow the Moon, a jour­ nal composed of writing and art pieces of Oakland University stu­ dents. Cerku is also a student in the Honors College and President of the Honors College Student Association, as well as a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Golden Key honors societies. She plans to become a novelist and writer to inspire others. Geoffrey Brieger, Professor Emeritus of Organic Chemistry, is cur­ rently investigating the fate of toxic organic compounds in the envi­ ronment; i.e., the fate of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) in con­ junction with zebra mussels, who are known to process enormous volumes of Great Lakes water, and consequently ingest considerable quantities of organic and inorganic pollutants. Another key research interest is in the biologically active components of herbal medicines, with concentration on the identification of the active ingredients in Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) fruits and St. John’s Wort. He also con­ tinues to carry out research in organic synthesis, with an emphasis on the discovery of new methods. Robert Conner is an undergrad History major at Oakland University with an additional major in English. He has a 3.7 GPA and is a two­ time Deans List student at Oakland.
