He is trained as comparative lawyer specialising in Japan and is a Director of the Australian Network for Japanese Law (ANJeL) Dr Anthony Bergin is the Director of Research Programs, Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) where he is responsible for the Institute’s research and publications programs on defence and international security issues. He has a particular interest in Antarctic affairs. Don Anton is a Senior Lecturer at the ANU College of Law and in 2008-2009 was a Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan Law School. He teaches, researches, and advises in the areas of international law and environmental law and has written on various aspects of Australian law and policy with respect to whaling. Dr Alan Hemmings is an Adjunct Associate Professor, Gateway Antarctica Centre for Antarctic Studies and Research, University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a Research Associate, Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia. Dr Natalie Klein is an Associate Professor at Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University. In 2006 Natalie was a member of the Sydney Panel of Independent International Legal Experts on Japan’s Special Permit (“Scientifi c”) Whaling Under International Law and is completing a book on maritime security. Mick McIntyre represents in Australia ‘Whales Alive’; a Pacifi c based, non-profi t organisation dedicated to the protection and celebration of whales and their fragile marine habitat. He has attended the annual meetings of the International Whaling Commission as an NGO observer. Professor Donald R. Rothwell is Professor of International Law at the ANU College of Law. In 2006 he chaired the Report of the Sydney Panel of Independent International Legal Experts on Japan’s Special Permit (“Scientifi c”) Whaling Under International Law, and in 2008 chaired the Canberra Panel addressing the same issue. He has advised the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) on whaling issues. Professor Kim Rubenstein is Director of the Centre for International and Public Law (CIPL) and a Professor in the ANU College of Law with a particular interest in the intersection of public and international law. Trevor Ryan is at the Faculty of Law, University of Canberra. He has a particular expertise in Japanese law and comparative law and is currently completing a PhD at the ANU. Dr Shirley Scott is an Associate Professor at the School of Social Sciences and International Studies, University of New South Wales. She has a particular interest in international law and has previously written on Australian/Japanese international legal relations. Trevor Wilson is Project Manager, Australia – Japan Research Centre, ANU. He has lived and worked in Japan for 12 years, in that time fulfi lling three diplomatic assignments to the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. http://law.anu.edu/cipl.
